I had a few minutes to spare before my daughters dance show yesterday so I took a quick run at a strict axle press PB. The t-shirt provided all the motivation I needed - and the PB was forthcoming 🤣❤️

Sometimes I stress a bit if I don't have a lot of time to train, but there's always something you can do- the only limit is your willingness to take short breaks between sets!

Just over 4 weeks out from Britain's Strongest Masters. Training is definitely starting to fizz a bit more after a post Masters & Qualifiers and Worlds qualifiers slump.

Last year I managed a surprise second at Brits, and having won Scotland's I know I won't be so under the radar. But the beauty of this sport is that it's pretty much me vs me -- and if I can bring the best version of me to the dancefloor come comp day, the results will take care of themselves...

It's been quite a last 6 weeks.

Starting with Masters where my 1st place earned me a spot at Britain's Strongest Master at the end of June. I'll be going all out to improve on last year's second place, but the competition will be intense.

Next up came the qualifiers where I earned my spot at the SECC in September for my first finals appearance.

Then I took on the Natural Worlds Strongest qualifiers in the Masters 40+
I was knackered & didn't have long, so it was one-and-done on all 4 events- and a first place from the online qualifying, taking me to the finals at the end of August.

My body is certainly feeling it now, but I'm already back at it - under the first-class guidance of - to give myself the best chance of performing to my potential across these three huge competitions that I'll be truly honoured to take part in.

So here's to a great summer of training, competing, and giving all I've got to achieve my goals across the three comps.

Throwback to the qualifiers ten days ago, with a few of the amazing pictures taken by the incredible

The first picture is the one I'm focusing on as I move into a new training block: because it was my most disappointing moment of the day, and therefore my biggest driver for improvement. The stone went down, and I dropped points & places. But the picture shows how close it was - a reminder & motivation to work for that extra moment, beyond what you think might be enough.

I already can't wait for the chance to right this wrong and some in September. But for now, we work...

🔥 Scotland's Strongest Man Qualifier 2026 🔥

Qualified in 16th place (and the oldest qualifier I think!)

An incredible day with some incredibly un-Scottish weather! My first qualifiers, only 3 weeks after my SSM Masters 🥇and it is very much both boxes ticked and onto British Masters at the end of June, and the SEC for '26 in September. After only 2 years of strongman, this is all seeming somewhat surreal - even more so given that I know I left points out there today...

1. 130kg Axle into Log - 4 reps. Felt good and thought I had time for 5th, but I didn't!

2. 315kg deadlift - 4 reps. Pleased with this.

3. 380kg yoke into 130kg PH farmers. This was my big worry, but I messed up the yoke that I was expecting to be fine on, and went well on the farmers. Overall pleased, as I took on my worst movement and smashed it.

4. 140kg barrel, 120kg bag, 90kg tyre - sled pull. Loved this event. Loading went well, sled was tough, and i literally lost balance at the end to just miss the heat win.

5. Stones. Loaded the first two great, but just missed the height on the 160kg & was done. Really disappointed with this, but also very excited to really work on technique for it as I know the strength is there.

Massive thanks to all the boys- the support in the group was incredible. Likewise to all the support & loading crew. as always organised & ran a great event. was awesome on the mic. And huge thanks to my coach, & also who started the journey off towards this point. All the Hostile crew who have given me tips along the way 👊👊

Biggest thanks to my incredible wife, , who supports me all the way ❤️❤️ I love to make you proud.

🔥🔥FAMILY TRAINING🔥🔥

It's still the school holidays down in South Ayrshire, and so my regular session with and had some extra participants - AND IT WAS AWESOME!

It is so doable to tailor workouts to allow all ages and experiences to train together. The strength piece remained; the conditioning remained; the skills work remained; the competitive edge remained; and everyone worked hard and had fun.

Oh yeh, and the kids won the competition 3 - 2.

For coaching - individual; group; or family/smallgroup, DM 📩 for info.

🔥🔥 Scotland's Strongest Master 2026🔥🔥

An awesome and somewhat surreal day on Saturday, less than 2 years since taking up a sport that I've loved since childhood. It is always a privilege to compete, at any level: but to go up against some of the strongest men in Scotland, regardless of age, was a real honour. It was also great to get to know more people within this community who have welcomed me & my family in. I loved the fact that my girls got to see strong women competing - they were inspired by you all.

My own day went a bit like this:

1. Log 110kg - I felt great coming into this, and had 10 reps in mind with as many vipers as possible. With a bit more control on the drop I reckon I could get that. But 9 was enough for the win. 1st

2. Deadlift 270kg - going out last 11 was a big ask. First time competing in a suit has taught me I can't kneel down and get back up! Pretty happy with 8 and 4th place

3. Husafell 30m 120kg - really pleased with the pick & felt quick. 1st

4. Yoke 30m 290kg - I was pleased with this as I went, but clearly wasn't as quick as I felt. Definitely work to do on the turn, and top end sp*ed. 5th

5. Stones 90, 100, 110, 120, 130, 140kg - my first completed stone run & pleased with one-motioning the first 4. But could move quicker between and from my lap. 3rd

Some thank yous:

My sponsor Fresh Fuel for keeping me well fed!

My coach, Cal for the great programming & advice.

My gyms: fitforlife_ayr & Martin Lennox - and the folk who give advice & encouragement

The organisers: Fullsterkur Fife & Garry Burt; Stuart Murray; Stephen Cherrie & all the helpers.

And finally, my incredible daughter's who cheered me on all day, and my wonderful wife, Andrea Birrell, who encourages me all the time and believes in me more than I do.

Next up, Official Scotland’s Strongest Man ™️ qualifiers at the end of the month. Let's see if this old boy can play with the big boys!
