💪 One determined pupil. A whole new play space.

Ovingham Middle School's outdoor fitness area exists thanks to pupil Abbie Fraser, who raised around £2,000 to help fund it. She made and sold crafts, completed a sponsored swim, and even wrote to local businesses and Joe Wicks, who all chipped in. Topped up by the school's summer fair and sponsored walk, her hard work made the whole thing possible.

A year on, it's a space the whole school loves, with monkey bars, climbing rigs, and gym equipment that gets everyone moving at break times and in PE. And because a pupil helped create it, it's one they're all so proud to call their own.

A brilliant example of what a bit of determination and community spirit can achieve. 👏

🏰 Twenty years of memories. One bold reimagining.

For over two decades, Kensworth's play area was a cherished space for local families. Working with Kensworth Parish Council, we reimagined the site with a long-term vision: a safe, inclusive space where children of all abilities can play side by side.

At its heart sits a striking castle multiplay structure, surrounded by features that encourage movement, imagination, and accessible play. A wheelchair roundabout and "You and Me" swing make room for inclusive, intergenerational play, while trampolines, springers, and sensory panels give children plenty of ways to explore and discover.

Funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, and local contributions, it was officially opened by Rachel Hopkins MP and local school children, who rushed in the moment the ribbon was cut.

🛹 Creating spaces young people genuinely want to use outdoors.

Skate parks and scooter spaces continue to be one of the most popular additions to community parks, recreation grounds, and public open spaces.

From beginner riders building confidence through to more experienced skaters and scooter users, these outdoor spaces encourage active outdoor use, social interaction, and independent recreation for older children and teenagers.

What makes these spaces work particularly well is their flexibility.

They can support:

✔ BMX riders
✔ Casual social use
✔ Different ages and ability levels

Alongside traditional playgrounds and MUGAs, skate features can help create more balanced community spaces that appeal to a wider range of users throughout the day.

We’re seeing more councils and community groups look at how outdoor spaces can better support teenagers and young people, giving them places to stay active, meet friends, and spend more time outdoors.

💚 Creating outdoor spaces that truly support every student is something we care deeply about at Caloo. 💚

We recently completed an outdoor gym installation at Little Heath School in Romford, a SEND school catering for students aged 11–19, with this particular outdoor gym designed to support those aged 14–19, including sixth form. 🏫

This type of space gives older students the opportunity to engage in physical activity in a way that feels structured, accessible, and confidence-building. 💪

Installed equipment included:

✅ Air Walker
✅ Cross Rider
✅ Chest Press / Lat Pull Combi
✅ Skier

All equipment is EN16630 certified, providing safe, inclusive exercise options designed for outdoor use. Alongside this, 26m² of fire-resistant grass matting was installed to support safe access and usability.

In a SEND setting, outdoor gym equipment can offer more than physical benefits. It can help support coordination, build strength, encourage routine, and provide a positive outlet for energy in a calm and familiar area. It also creates opportunities for independent use as well as guided activity with staff.

Projects like this are always rewarding to be part of. Seeing spaces come together that genuinely support both the school and the individual needs of students is what drives our team.

🛝 Playgrounds work best when they grow with the community around them.

This recent project for cm Ilmer Parish Council in Buckinghamshire focused on extending the existing space while making better use of what was already there.

The aim was simple. Create a playground that offers more variety, better flow, and something for a wider range of ages.

The result brings together new equipment, refreshed surfacing, and retained elements from the original playground to create a space that feels complete and easy to use.

What has been included:

✅ Sensory and driving play panels.
✅ New surfacing and grass matting.
✅ Bow top fencing.
✅ Wheelchair roundabout and basket swing.
✅ 12ft x 6ft moveable football goals.
✅ Timber trim trail features, including balance walk, rope walk, wobble bridge, monkey bars, and stepping logs.
✅ Traverse wall and traversing poles.
✅ Relocation of existing equipment where suitable.
✅ Removal and disposal of old items.

Projects like this show how a well-planned refresh can improve how a space is used day to day. It creates more opportunities for play, supports a wider age range, and helps bring the whole area together.

🌟 Outdoor Play Upgrade at Sir Bobby Robson School 🌟

We have recently completed a brilliant new play and activity space for Sir Bobby Robson School in Ipswich. The school supports pupils aged 8 to 16, and their outdoor areas play an important part in helping children build confidence, stay active and enjoy time outside. This new space brings together a wide mix of activities that encourage movement, creativity and social play.

🟩 Groundworks

We carried out full stone-based groundwork across 400 to 500 square metres. This included the removal and disposal of all excavated materials so the area was ready for final surfacing.

This installation gives pupils a wide range of opportunities to move, explore and enjoy their outdoor space. We are very proud of how this project has come together for the school.

🌞 Summer installation spotlight 🌿

We were back on site this summer with a brilliant timber and wet pour project that brings plenty of play value into this play space. The design encourages balance, movement, and confidence building, and we know the children will enjoy every part of it. Our team is immensely proud of how this one turned out. The play area includes
✔️ Double balance beam
✔️ Weaving beam
✔️ Log stack
✔️ Timber swing with basket seat
✔️ Rattle bridge
✔️ Zig-zag balance walk
✔️ Clamber Stack Piccolo
✔️ Wet pour in Standard Green throughout

For this project, we supplied and installed over 160m² of EN1177-certified wet pour surfacing in Standard Green. Surfacing has been laid around the play equipment at 40mm depths to support a free fall height of up to 1.36m and 20mm in other areas. The basket swing area has been finished to a footprint of 2.45m x 7.8m, giving plenty of safe space for movement and play.

A great example of how much activity can fit into a small play footprint with the right layout and expert installation.

🌳 Inclusive Play Space for Hazlemere Parish Council 🌳

We’re proud to share this inclusive playground for Hazlemere Parish Council, designed to offer children of all ages and abilities a fun and welcoming space to play.

The area includes a great mix of play equipment that encourages movement, imagination, and sensory play:

✅ Wheelchair-accessible roundabout for two users
✅ Caterpillar bridge and multiplay unit suitable for ages 2–12
✅ Swing set with both flat and cradle seats
✅ Sensory play panels, including a texture turtle, rain wheel, and communication panel
✅ Animal springers and spinners for younger children
✅ Wobble board, balance beam, stepping pods, and pull-up bars
✅ Flat-top self-closing gate for added safety
✅ Bespoke two-tier timber tree seat that the Parish Council wanted to retain as part of the park’s character

The surfacing combines colourful wet pour and rubber mulch with smooth rubber edging, providing safety and a bright, engaging look throughout the space.
