⭐️ FIVE STAR RUN COACHING TESTIMONIAL - COLIN ALEXANDER ⭐️

Colin’s just back from an epic Cape Town Trail Marathon and wanted to share why he chose coaching with Fiona:

"Why Fiona? - After working with her on and off for years, there was no other choice. As an experienced athlete herself, she knows exactly how to get the best out of you.

How I found the coaching? - My event was the Cape Town Trail Marathon. We set goals upfront and Fiona’s weekly plans landed every Friday on TrainingPeaks - always with time to tweak. Max 3 runs/week, plus S&C, cross training and hiking for time on feet. Mileage built steadily with deload weeks to avoid burnout/injury.

How coaching helped? - 2025 hadn’t been my best year and I picked up niggles Dec/Jan. Fiona kept it measured with my physio so I could keep progressing safely. No pace targets - just time/distance and course-specific hints. I planned my own routes and practised nutrition/hydration.

Result: best training block in 10+ years, and I hit the start line calm, confident, zero nerves.

Race day - 43km + 1800m elevation. At 10km I rolled my ankle - turned out to be a chipped bone + torn tendon. Choice: DNF or keep going. Took 30 seconds. Kept going. Got the medal 🏅

Verdict: 100% would recommend Fiona. We’ve already chatted future plans - once this ankle’s fixed, we’re back at it.”

FIVE STAR RUN COACHING TESTIMONIAL: ANNIE WALKER

We are super proud of Annie after completing her first solo Marathon 2 weeks ago. Not only because she managed to get a PB but because of not that long ago she thought she would need to stop running after really struggling with sore knees. But she didn't give up and introduced strength to her week and boom nailed it! An inspiration.

Here is what Annie had to say:

"To my own surprise I decided that I would do a solo marathon – Edinburgh Marathon.

I have to admit that I found the prospect of solo training runs very daunting. My initial intentions were to follow a plan similar to one Fiona had previously set out for me. However, before I even started I decided to get in touch with Fiona. I have been coached by her a few times before and I felt the need to ask for her support once more. Working together previously helped me to reach goals I didn't think I was capable of. Thankfully she agreed.

I know that I work best if I'm accountable, and having my plan set for me on a weekly basis takes away any worries that I may not be doing enough running or strength training etc.

I was fretful about doing my first solo long run within the plan, having always ran with others. I shouldn't have worried. It went well and it gave me the confidence I needed for the long training runs that were to follow.

The weeks went past quickly, and before I knew it we were counting down to race day. I felt I was strong and my running had improved, more than I could have imagined.

One thing that was worrying me about the marathon was the forecast, it was for pretty hot weather. I discussed my worries with Fiona and strategies were put in place, mostly around nutrition and hydration, though my speed was also discussed.

It was tough running the Edinburgh marathon in temps that reached 24° but I stayed strong and followed the plan. I was mindful of the advice that I'd been given for such a hot day and took on board so much more fluid and extra nutrition. I am sure this is what got me through. This and taking advantage of every single hose that folks were cooling us with.

The coaching paid off and I came in at 4hrs 33m. This was a pb for me and at 63yrs old I'm happy to take that. Afterwards I said the same as I've done after each big race, that I'll never do it again, this time I meant it. Well, I thought I did! I'm actively looking to find another marathon for this year.

Thank you Fiona. If you are ever looking for a running coach, don't hesitate, you won't find better than Fiona."

"Having taken up running during the Covid pandemic and despite taking part in a few events of various lengths, I never really felt like I had a good handle on how to balance training and recovery. I’ve used a few apps and online training programmes before but when I was given the opportunity to run the London marathon, knowing that this would likely be a once in a lifetime opportunity, I approached Fiona for some 1:1 coaching.

Working locally, I am aware of the impact that her running club has on the local community and I have personally taken part in both her running festival and trail races so know how well organised and fun these events are. When a close friend and running buddy also approached Fiona for some 1:1 coaching and had some very positive things to say, I knew it was time to take this step and see what was possible.

1:1 coaching was totally different from any of the generic training plans I have used before. Having a coach meant that if things didn’t feel right or life simply got complicated, the plan could be adapted in such a way that the overall goal was not affected. Fiona created a weekly training schedule which included running, strength work and stretching - something i have never really incorporated previously! The training was full on, as I knew it would be, but I was confident that with Fiona in my pocket, I was always moving forwards even if sometimes it was tough so see how.

The marathon was great! Such an experience and I don’t think I would have managed to achieve a PB in such tough conditions, if I had not done the 1:1 coaching to get me to the start line.

I would not hesitate to recommend Fiona to anyone considering 1:1 run coaching. She is so friendly, approachable and knowledgeable – its really a no brainer if you have a punchy event or goal in mind."

FIVE STAR RUN COACHING - TESTIMONIAL - FRANK MCGAFFNEY

We caught up with Frank after his epic year so far. Here is what he had to say. If you are interested in getting coached by Fiona then please get in touch ([email protected])

"2025 was not a great year for me in terms of my running. I had several minor injuries and 2 bouts of flu that lingered for weeks. I only managed to start one race all year, naturally, it had to be the Chilli 10k trail race in my hometown, Auchterarder. The minor injuries were recurring niggles and I knew were probably the result of lack of stretching, strength and mobility work.

I was determined to make up for my disappointing running year in 2026 and decided I had to avoid the winter laziness that I’ve experienced in recent years. Cold, dark and wet nights provide me a real mental running challenge.

I needed a focus! I signed up for Rasselbock’s back yard ultra on 28 March 2026 and decided to have another crack at the Glentress marathon on 15 February 2026, this event being my only DNF to date when I tackled it in 2020. I felt these early season events would give me the focus to train well over the winter months.
The last time I felt really good about my training and ex*****on of an event was
Malaga marathon in December 2023. I smashed a 21 minute PB and put this down
being coached by Fiona Watt. Having experienced a fantastic Malaga training block
and race, I decided to contact Fiona again.

Fiona runs my local run club, Five Star Run Club and takes multiple classes every
week. During a club run in November 2025, I asked if Fiona had capacity to take me
on from December for a 16 week training block and prepare me for both events. I
knew the training block would be a challenge given the type of events – a very hilly
trail marathon, followed by a back yard ultra with no hills! I was delighted when Fiona agreed and she never “batted an eyelid” at the 2 very different events I wanted her to prepare me for.

We used Training Peaks, a fitness training app and Fiona set my weekly tasks every
Friday. The first part of the block involved lots of hill work and trails, which I actually enjoy but what really made the difference was the non running sessions – pilates, strength, stability and plenty of stretching. After Glentress, the sessions changed to race pace runs (slow) and lots of simulation yards with no hill reps! Other than rolling my ankle in a pothole disguised as a puddle, I remained injury free throughout the 4 month block. The longest I have managed since the Malaga block! I put this down to all the non running training sessions Fiona set.

Fiona provided constant support, encouragement and advice throughout the block
and took away all the hassle of planning my own training. I had the added benefit of
seeing Fiona at club runs when we discussed my planned weekend long runs in
more detail, as well as analysing the previous weekends run. Fiona also tailored the
strength and mobility sessions to target my weak areas and build leg strength to
support my fragile runners knees! The week of both events, we had a call to discuss
race strategy and Fiona provided some great advice and “golden nuggets” of
information from her own experiences of similar events.

I’m delighted to report that both events were a huge success. I had a mental
challenge with Glentress, having DNF’d in 2020. The 2 half marathon loops have
relentless climbs on difficult terrain. This year we had heavy snow just to make it that bit harder! The aim was just to finish the race and I had no time target. I didn’t want that pressure. I ended up really enjoying the event and had a strong finish on the downhill section. All the hill work and strength sessions really paid off.

My result at Rasselbock was probably my greatest running achievement to date. I
really wanted to hit the magic 100 miles (24 yards) a distance I have not managed in a BYU or point to point race. I managed to fulfil my dream and reach that magic
target – 100 miles! I know I would not have managed to achieve this success without the wonderful coaching provided by Fiona.

Fiona’s coaching has made a real difference to my running and performance. I’ve
now excelled (by my standards) in 3 events thanks to Fiona’s guidance. I highly
recommend Fiona’s 1-2-1 coaching programmes and I will be back for more for sure."
