Tuesday evening saw a second Senior home match in 2 days in the Village T20 competition and for the second time we picked up a comfortable win, this time against Eaton Bray.

Losing the toss we were in the field to start with against a youthful visiting side. On a well used and persistently low pitch it was a bit of a mismatch early on. Lawrence Snookes had the opposition skipper dropped by Jimi Chialoufas at slip but the next delivery moved one back into him to pin him leg before from just the fifth ball. With an inexperienced batting line up exposed to the new ball the floodgates duly opened. There were some questionable shot choices but Lawrence Snookes was bowling nothing loose and was just too good for the batters, finishing with ridiculous figures of 5 wickets for 6 runs from his 4 overs. There wasn't much let up from the other end with Thomas Patel and Ben Sjoberg only going for 19 and 9 respectively in their 4 over spells. Yet again Casey Bobrick Dawson (2 for 20 off 4) proved too much for the tail to resist before Jonny Patel (2 for 5 off 1.3) took over to end the innings. A direct hit run out from cover point to the bowlers end was followed by bowling the last pair of batters in consecutive balls. Eaton Bray finished on 67 for 9 from 18.3 overs.

We lost Jonny Patel early in our reply, with the non-striker later suggesting the leg before verdict was a little harsh. Liam Smith avoided a third duck in a row with a sweep for 6 over square leg but then got bowled by an unplayable delivery that bounced and pretty much just shot along the floor. Charlie Skiller hit a couple of boundaries before he too was bowled (from the ball in the photo accompanying this report) and Will Andrews was even more unfortunate than Jonny when he was given out lbw after the ball had struck his glove while sweeping. But Jimi Chialoufas was holding it together as usual as he finished on 45 not out (32 balls, 6x4, 2x6). He was denied his half century when for the second time in 4 days Ben Sjoberg smashed a 6 to win the game. We passed our target for the loss of 4 wickets with 9 overs to spare.

After a few frustrating weeks of weather the Senior Midweek side got up and running in their defence of the Village T20 competition. Hosting Linslade, our visitors won the toss and opted to bat first.

The away team started brightly, reaching 39 without loss before we began to make regular inroads. Recovering well from conceding 14 in his first over, Thomas Patel took 2 for 26 from 4 overs. After the opening pair were separated, no other partnership added more than 17 as we worked through the line up. Tight spells from Jonny Patel (1 for 18 off 4) and George Robinson (3 for 16 off 4) ensured no acceleration was possible in the middle overs. Then as he so often does Casey Bobrick Dawson (3 for 3 off 2) swept through the tail towards the back end of the innings. Linslade rather limped to their total of 109 for 9 from 20 overs, and had it not been for some uncharacteristically poor catching it could have been even less than that.

We also made a good start, with Jonny Patel (21 off 22 balls, 2x4) first to depart with the score on 48. Although we then lost another wicket quickly afterwards, there was no danger of us making the same mistakes as our opponents. After a watchful start Jimi Chialoufas began to pepper the boundaries to finish on 64 not out (44 balls, 6x4, 2x6) and was accompanied by the experienced head of Neil Roberts with an unbeaten 16 (17 balls, 1x4). We romped past our target with 8 wickets and more than 4 overs to spare.

But we go again tomorrow, with Eaton Bray the next opponents to visit Church Lane.

Still no league defeats for either Senior side after a welcome return for the sun following last Saturday's washout and lots of rain midweek. Throw in a record breaking bowling performance and it was a pretty decent day once again for the club.

The 1st team made the trip to Brill and on winning the toss chose to bowl. After the recent wet weather the pitch was very slow and mostly pretty low, making attacking play difficult. Although we didn't make an early breakthrough, and had a very confident appeal for a catch behind turned down, we were able to exert real pressure by squeezing the run rate and getting through our overs quickly. The opening wicket finally came with our hosts only on 25 in the 14th over. Dharmendra Patel tempted the opening bat into a loose shot which was juggled then eventually held by Ash Patel at backward point. Another dismissal soon occurred but the key wicket came with the score on 46 when the other opener who had scored 31 (despite repeatedly playing and missing some big attempted drives) edged to wide slip where Gavin Paulse made a superb diving catch. From there the innings began to fold rather rapidly. Dharma ripped out the middle order with a hat-trick, although the last victim of the trio was unlucky to be seen off by his own umpire for an alleged edge to the wicketkeeper. With the league moving to the win / loss / draw format we were able keep our bowlers on for a maximum of 15 overs, and Dharma just kept picking up wickets so we kept him on - taking the first 8 to leave Brill on 63 for 8. Just as we thought he was on the verge of the rarest of feats Thomas Patel ruined the fun by daring to bowl a straight one that the batter played all around. But still Dharma came again to grab yet another victim and finish with the astounding figures of 14.5 overs, 5 maidens, 9 for 38. In the modern era of records held fully in play-cricket (going back 15 or so years) no one had taken more than 7 wickets in an innings for BACCC so this underlines how special the performance was. A reward for incredible consistency in line and length, with a few variations thrown in occasionally just to keep the batters guessing.

The result was seemingly a formality after we made a a half century opening partnership in our reply, Safeer Ahmed eventually clipping a full toss to midwicket to depart for 35 (39 balls, 6x4). We then lost our way somewhat, Jonny Patel hitting a first ball 6 and getting caught attempting the same second ball, and then Brill resident Liam Smith falling for his third duck of the season with all his in-laws watching. Gavin Paulse remained a reassuring presence, unbeaten on 24 (42 balls, 3x4) and the result was never really in doubt. Ben Sjoberg, also on 3 ducks for the season, prodded around nervously for 10 balls before launching a straight 6 on to the grass bank to take us to victory in style. We passed our target with 4 wickets down, in just 17.3 overs. Just in time to enjoy an excellent, old school cricket tea before heading back to watch the 2nds at home.

In a top of the table clash the 2nd XI were hosting Cublington 2nds at Church Lane. On another low bouncing pitch our visitors made a solid start, reaching 41 without loss. But then lost 3 wickets in the space of 4 runs. A couple of decent partnerships took the away side to 90 before losing their fourth wicket then to 130. However, we then tore through the lower order as 130 for 4 became 140 for 9 from the maximum of 42 overs that Cublington could bat. The wickets were shared out between Kris Greig (3 for 30 off 11 overs), Tom Walker (3 for 46 off 14) and Casey Bobrick Dawson (2 for 44 off 12) but the highlight was undoubtedly wicketkeeper Max Mariscotti throwing himself full length down the legside to catch a genuine leg glance from the visitors' best batter in his outstretched left hand.

We also made a decent start to our innings, reaching 28 without loss, before both openers were removed by the time we were on 36. With some accurate bowling and the lack of bounce we struggled to get the run rate to the required level. When Lewis Richards was bowled for 15 (31 balls, 1x4) we needed 80 more at 4.5 runs per over and we started to think about drawing to stop our opponents getting full points and closing the gap on us any further than was necessary. We could have been more pro-active to put pressure on the Cublington bowlers but after Casey Dawson was pinned leg before for 22 (51 balls, 2x4) we were never going to get to our target. It was left to Jack Patel and Kris Greig to block out the remaining overs to leave us on 92 for 6 from our 38 overs.

It was a case of what might have been as we exited the National Village Cup at the Regional Final stage away to Chorleywood. Definitely a missed opportunity but plenty of positives to take from the game, especially in the field with our bowling and ground fielding.

We won the toss and chose to bowl. The decision was vindicated by a couple of early wickets. Tom Walker celebrated his first game since the birth of son Blake with the initial breakthrough, courtesy of a comfortable Liam Smith catch at a straightish extra cover position. Ben Sjoberg (1 for 39 off 7 overs) then bowled a beauty to take the off stump of the new batter and our hosts were 31 for 2. For the only time in the match we then had a bit of a lapse in our fielding. Twice in quick succession we put down well struck but relatively straightforward catches off the opposition captain. He then threatened to punish us by striking 5 x 4s in a few overs but a moment of inspiration turned the tide. Skipper Mike Parsonage (1 for 31 off 8) was heaved to the midwicket boundary, only for Lakindu Gunaratne (Lucky Junior) to take an outstanding catch running round and just stopping short of the line as he held a very difficult chance. Tom Walker (2 for 28 off 8) bowled the next man to reduce Chorleywood to 73 for 4. We than began to squeeze with Thomas Patel (just 16 conceded off 8 overs) offering very few scoring opportunities. A patient partnership of 58 in just under 18 overs edged the home side towards a defendable score before another flying effort from Liam Smith finally broke it. The death bowlers Max Burgess (2 for 35 off 5) and Jonny Patel (3 for 20 off 4) took regular wickets to ensure the total did not escalate too much. The run out of the obdurate opener for 67 off the last ball saw a final score of 174 all out after 40 overs.

We started our reply steadily, reaching 20 before Lucky Junior found himself at the same end as his partner to be run out for 15 (22 balls, 3x4). The next partnership was threatening to take the game away from Chorleywood, mixing watchfulness and selective aggression to move us on to 89 by the time we reached drinks after 20 overs. But the break interrupted the concentration and first ball afterwards a loose drive saw us lose Gavin Paulse for 30, before Liam Smith was bowled by a beauty the next delivery. When Jonny Patel (48 off 42 balls, 4x4, 1x6) hit a long hop to midwicket the collapse was in full force. 89 for 1 soon became 114 all out as we imploded. Their captain (4 for 7 in 6 overs) was a skillful operator but we let ourselves down at the other end against some weaker bowlers. A game we should have won but the chance of moving to the National rounds for the first time in recent history was sadly lost.

Sunday saw our friendly team host Soulbury at Church Lane. It was a near perfect game for us, with a mixture of young and old, a fairly close match, the match played in good spirits and the right result from a home perspective.

Soulbury opted to bat first and started well, reaching 44 before losing their first wicket. Veteran club captain Mike Parsonage (2 for 18 off 4 overs) pulled off one of the oldest tricks in the book, with slow long hops on either side of the wicket leading to catches removing both openers in short succession. With the help of Lakmina Gunaratne (just 7 runs conceded in 5 overs) we closed down the scoring rate and gained the control we never really lost over the remainder of the game. The highlights were really how the youngsters did most of the heavy lifting to lead us to victory.

14 year olds Freddie (1 wicket and 37 with the bat), Sonny (2 wickets and 12 runs) and James (1 wicket and a catch), as well as 15 year old Archie (1 wicket and 24 not out) all had strong games. Mike Parsonage got his just rewards for running out a young lad (a late fill in to get to a full team who was about 1/5 of his age) with a direct hit from deep mid on by yorking himself for a duck but other useful contributions from the still youthful Will Smith (18) and Will Andrews (19) helped the even younger lads to get us over the line with a few overs to spare, as we reached the 137 required for the loss of 6 wickets with 3.5 overs remaining.
