Lacrosse in War Time 🥍

During wartime what is essential to the soldier & those who supported the Armed Forces is generally seen as equipment, rations, and transport.

While these are all a necessary part of war and being a soldier, what appears to be often overlooked is the leisure time in between active service and combat.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them.

ENGLAND LACROSSE COVID-19 GUIDANCE

England Lacrosse CEO, Mark Coups, has addressed the lacrosse community following the confirmation of a national lockdown beginning on Thursday 5 November:

“I am sure that you are all as disappointed as I am that our Phase 4 Return to Play including training and matches, which has given so many of us enjoyment and relief from the ongoing situation, has to be put on hold as we move back to Phase 2 RTP.

“We are very grateful to all the volunteers, COVID officers, players, coaches and officials that have played their part in delivering our sport safely over the last few months.

“Through the lacrosse community’s hard work and compliance with our and the Government’s guidance we have managed to keep the coronavirus transmission rates within the game extremely low and we recognise that this next short period will be challenging for us all.

“However, as a responsible sport, we must now do what is necessary to help reduce the prevalence of the virus within the country.

“We will do whatever it takes to support our lacrosse community and our wider communities to ensure we are able to come out of the next four weeks in a stronger, and healthier position.

“For now, I wish you and your families well; keep active, and most importantly, please stay safe and well”.

Mark Coups, CEO, England Lacrosse

Ashton Lacrosse clubs condolences are with Cheadle Lacrosse club after hearing that a lacrosse veteran Mark Erlam has passed away.

Our players on and off the pitch have many fond memories of Mark and he will be truly missed.

From us all at Ashton to the team at Cheadle, we are here to support you at this difficult time.

Cheadle Lacrosse Club and the wider lacrosse community are immensely shocked and deeply saddened to hear the passing of a legend of our club and of the game, Mark Erlam.

Earls was a 'larger than life' character, both on and off the field. A serial winner, the best face-off man to play the game in his prime and someone who was loved off the pitch throughout the nation.

His love for the game continued throughout his life which was so prematurely ended. When he was told about the Bath 8s weekend being cancelled in September, he arranged an inter-Cheadle version of the tournament over the same weekend, so as to keep the tradition running. He won the 'spirit of Bath' trophy as a result, and never was there ever a more deserved winner.

Earls was even playing for our C team just a couple of days ago on Saturday, as shown in this picture. Low and behold, he's front and centre with a huge smile on his face - exactly how we all know and love him.

Our thoughts and condolences are with his family at this time.

Damn few like us x

Why is it called lacrosse?

Before it was called lacrosse, the Algonquin called the sport baggataway and the Iroquois called it tewaarathon. Legend has it that it was named lacrosse by French settlers who thought that the stick looked like the staff carried by their Bishops at church, called a crozier. In French, the crozier is called a crosse. The settlers watched the Indigenous people playing their game and called it “la crosse.”

We pay our respects to the mighty 'CHEDS' 🥍

Today marks 19 years since Andrew ‘Cheds’ Cheshire sadly passed away, following a game that he played on the 27th October 2001.

We remember Cheds not with sadness, but with huge smiles on our faces about the person he was, on and off the lacrosse field.

Andy took up lacrosse at Stamford High School, making the position of goalkeeper his own. As part of this journey, Andy kept goal in the 1978 final of the Centurion Cup vs Wilmslow, a game that Stamford would go on to lose 6-5, but a piece of history, as they were the first secondary school team to reach that stage of the competition.

Cheds also proudly represented the North of England in a game against the South, in the ‘78 Stockport World Series curtain raiser.

The North won 14 - 0, a huge clean sheet for Andy.

Stamford got their revenge a year later, beating Wilmslow 6 - 5 in the Junior and Schools Cup. He who laughs last laughs longest!

That team went on to enjoy 2 unbeaten years, something which Andy was a huge part of.

After leaving Stamford, Cheds joined Ashton lacrosse club, where he played on all teams from the E team right through to the 1st team, culminating in winning the 2nd division title before doubling up and helping Ashton to win the Junior Flags trophy, beating Cheadle A team 17-6 in 1990/91.

In 1984 Cheds was part of the junior team that raised money to tour USA. Yet again Cheds was instrumental helping Ashton to win 3 of their 6 games on tour.

Andy played in the 1994 World Series Emerging Nations Division for Wales, in Manchester. This was Wales’ first ever international tournament.

His impact on his team mates, his clubs and the sport was huge and always positive, whilst away from lacrosse, Andrew Cheshire was the most likeable of chaps:

He was always happy, very outgoing; open and approachable. The Andy we knew loved a laugh, loved his music, loved the occasional beer, loved lacrosse and above all, loved his family!

Cheds will always be in our hearts and minds.

Raise a glass to him tonight. 🍺

Dr William George Beers

Lacrosse in England is an amateur sport played mainly by community based clubs like Ashton Lacrosse Club and university teams.

Field lacrosse was introduced to England in 1876 by William George Beers and other Canadians who toured the country playing exhibition matches.

A second tour was arranged in 1883; by then England had 60 clubs playing regular fixtures in Cambridgeshire, Cheshire, Lancashire, Middlesex and Yorkshire.

The first national governing body for the men's game, the English Lacrosse Union, was formed in 1892. A Ladies' Lacrosse Association followed in 1912.

The separate men's and women's organisations merged in 1996 to form the English Lacrosse Association, which was renamed England Lacrosse in 2019. England Lacrosse oversees both the men's and women's national teams.

The goalie.

Lacrosse’s unsung hero. Keeper of the net. Last line of defense. A player whose contribution never shows up on the scoreboard at the end of a game, but whose efforts may have determined the outcome.

They say there is a personality - a “type”- that tends to choose the same position on the field his name is 'Jordan' he is our gatekeeper 🥍

Basic Lacrosse Rules

• 10 players allowed on the field – 3 attack, 3 middies, 3 defenders and 1 goalie.

• No opposing player can make contact with the goalie or the goalie’s stick when the goalie is in the goal crease area.

• There can be a maximum of 4 long poles on the field per team.

• Body checking is only allowed for older boys. At the 12U, 10U, and 8U levels, a player may not deliver a body check to an opponent.

• The ball can not be touched by a player’s hand except by the goalie.

• To avoid an offsides penalty, there must be 4 players behind the defensive-area line.

• Play is stopped immediately when the ball goes out of bounds. When a shot on goal goes out of bounds, the possession is awarded to the team of the player closest to location of the ball when it went out. When the ball goes out of bounds, for any other reason other than a shot (i.e. an errant pass), the possession is awarded to the team that did not touch the ball last.

• Lacrosse penalties vary by age. Some potential lacrosse penalties include cross checks, holding, illegal body checks, illegal screens, illegal sticks, etc.
