Bartitsu stands at an interesting point in its history. It’s no longer lost, but it’s not yet fully alive in the way it could be. That puts us in a unique position—not just as practitioners, but as caretakers of something with real potential.
Moving forward, we need to think less about preservation alone and more about progress with purpose. Bartitsu was never meant to be static. It was practical, adaptive, and ahead of its time. If we want it to thrive today, we should approach it with that same mindset.
That means building clear structure so others can learn it easily, training it in a way that proves its effectiveness, and making it accessible to people who are curious but unsure where to start. It also means sharing it—through teaching, writing, and demonstrating—so it doesn’t remain hidden in small circles.
Just as importantly, we should support each other. A strong, connected community will always outlast isolated efforts.
Bartitsu has identity, history, and function. What it needs now is momentum.
If we treat it as a living art, train it with intent, and share it with others, we won’t just be looking back at Bartitsu—we’ll be helping define what it becomes next.
