As the season progresses, and heading into the final stages of the Premier League campaign, it is a chance to analyze and compare two of the biggest prospects in the Arsenal squad. On the one hand, the Norwegian 23-year-old attacking midfielder, Martin Ødegaard, who was transferred in from Real Madrid in the summer for 35 million euros (which can be proven an absolute bargain in the future), and on the other hand, the 21-year-old wonderkid and Hale End academy product, Emile Smith Rowe. Ødegaard was brought in to offer depth and competition in the no. 10 spot.
We compare two quite similar players at first sight in terms of position. However, they present numerous vital differences if we take a closer look to their playstyles. At the beginning of the season, it seemed like the two players did not quite work well in the same line-up, making it a great puzzle and challenge for Mikel Arteta to find a way and combine them efficiently in terms of tactical approach. Considering the recent form of the team (especially taking into account the matches after the trip to Dubai), we can safely say that the Spanish manager has figured out a solution.
It is safe to say that both players are not the classic no. 10 style that operates mostly at the center of the field. Ødegaard’s role suits better the Mezzala description, focusing his movement and position at the right side of the pitch, while Emile Smith Rowe occupies the left flank, either carrying the ball through the middle or cutting inside as an Inverted Winger.
Ødegaard showcases a tremendous work ethic, meaning that we can see him dropping deep to receive the ball, and, as a very common scenario, he plays quick passes and one-twos in the right flank with Bukayo Saka in order to create problems to the opposition defense. The connection between the two players is already flourishing and it manages to become one of the biggest attacking threats when Arsenal tries to create chances. Ødegaard’s ability with the ball and vision are phenomenal. However, his contribution to the attacking volumes (goals + assists) testifies that he has to be more confident when a shot possibility arises, and also it is pretty obvious that the team is in need of a clinical finisher.
Emile Smith Rowe on the contrary, shows high confidence, constantly trying to create shot opportunities for himself. He can equally score with both feet, and nearly half of his shots on target are translated into goals. In addition, he can work well as a super-sub, coming off the bench and scoring 3 goals only in December. Last but not least, his movement allows Tierney to express a greater attacking impact with overlapping runs and passing combinations. If Emile Smith Rowe manages to stay injury-free, he is going to be a key player in order for the team to achieve the goal of Champions League football next season.
