Ashington Shotokan Karate

Ashington Shotokan Karate Ashington Shotokan Karate Club was established in 1974. The senior instructors are Sensei Jill Kelly, 7th Dan and Sensei Trish Bruce, 6th Dan.

A message from Sensei Jill:
"I started teaching in Ashington more than 30 years ago. I hadn’t been a black belt for many years, but had experienced good teaching and instruction at the Ashington Shotokan Karate Club main dojo, and we were keen to open another venue in the town centre. The club is affiliated to the Karate Union of Great Britain, the largest Shotokan organisation in the United Kingd

om, with over 14,000 members and 380 clubs around the country. The club has produced many good students including several who train on the KUGB National Squads, National Champions, and International Competitors. There have been several occasions when parents have started training in the class with their children and are still training now! One of these parents is one of our club instructors, Sensei Trish Bruce, who specialises in taking the junior grades. Many of our students join other KUGB clubs when they move away to University as the KUGB have many clubs within the University network." The club dojo at Ashington YMCA was established in 1988 by Sensei Jill Kelly, and was moved to Ashington Leisure Centre in 2016. The current instructors are Sensei Jill Kelly, 6th Dan and Sensei Trish Bruce, 6th Dan. The classes are held at Ashington Leisure Centre on Lintonville Terrace, Ashington, Northumberland. On Saturday Sensei Trish and Evie were in Nottingham at the KUGB (Karate Union of Great Britain) National Championship celebrating the 60th anniversary of the KUGB.
Evie also competed representing Ashington Shotokan Karate .
This event is the most prestigious event held annually demonstrating tremendous skill and attitude of KUGB members throughout the UK.
Evie entered the Ladies kata event and Ladies kumite event and represented Ashington with great pride and outstanding karate, especially in the ladies kumite where she progressed through the rounds successfully up to the rounds where you are up against the seeded ladies from the finals last year. Evie continued to perform at her best , unfortunately was beaten in this match. I am extremely proud of her performance on the day and she was an absolute credit to our club. Well done Evie.

A thank you message from Sensei Jill.
I was quite overwhelmed by the beautiful array or flowers, presents and celebration cakes I received on my retirement from teaching Ashington Shotokan Karate Club... as I think you know!. Some of my flowers have just finished now, but my house was alive with sweet smelling flowers for a long time.
So many thanks to all of you who made the day so memorable.
How it was kept secret from me, while organising the whole day went on... and for so many people to be there, is a mystery to me but then I remembered Sensei Trish was behind this and she is good at keeping secrets!
The club is in great hands.
Thank you everyone
Sensei Jill kelly

On Saturday at Ashington Karate Club we celebrated the retirement from teaching of a very special person.
Sensei Jill Kelly, 7th Dan, has made the decision to retire after setting up the club in 1988 at the YMCA Ashington. Since then the club continued to grow into the fantastic family club it is today.
Sensei Jill was hoping to go without a fuss, but we decided she deserved to be recognised for her dedication and everything she has done for Ashington karate club.
We held a presentation with lots of flowers, gifts, and lots of students past and present, plus friends and families who all came to wish Sensei Jill the very best on her new journey..
This was a very special day for a very special person. We know many more will want to wish SenseiJill Kelly 7th Dan KUGB (Karate Union of Great Britain) all the very best for the future.
Good luck Sensei you will always be a very important part of Ashington karate Club Thank you from us all.
