From 12-minute miles to a 1:02 Blaydon Race finish 🏃‍♀️

On Monday Toni Laverick completed the Blaydon Race in 1:02:17.

When Toni started back in April, she was running close to 12-minute miles. On race day she averaged 10:31-minute miles across the whole race.

Not bad for someone who says she’s “not a natural runner”.

Alongside her running, Toni has been working through the Athena programme, fitting training around work, kids and all the usual chaos of everyday life.

A few weeks ago she told me:

💬 “The strength work and sled work helped my running capacity and made me feel stronger.”

And that’s exactly the point.

Strength training isn’t just about getting stronger in the gym. It’s about being stronger for the things you want to do outside of it too.

From no regular exercise for 2 years to completing the Blaydon Race in just 8 weeks.

A brilliant result and one Toni should be incredibly proud of. 👏

When I launched Athena online, it wasn’t because I’d suddenly discovered menopause strength training.

It was because I’d already spent years coaching women through perimenopause, menopause and beyond inside our gym.

I’d seen first-hand how many women were being told to do more cardio, eat less, or simply accept that feeling weaker, less confident and less capable was just part of getting older.

I knew there had to be a better way.

For over a decade, I’ve coached women from all walks of life; complete beginners, mums, mums to be, grandmothers, athletes, women returning after injury, women rebuilding confidence and women who simply wanted to feel like themselves again.

Athena was built from those years of experience.

Not from trends. Not from social media. Not from what gets the most likes.

Just real coaching, with real women, getting real results.

Because strength training isn’t always about becoming the strongest person in the gym.

It’s about having the strength, confidence and capability to live life on your terms.

If you’re already part of Athena, thank you for trusting me to be part of your journey 🫶🏻🔱

And if you’re new here, welcome.

One thing that keeps coming up in our check-ins is confidence.

Not just confidence to lift heavier weights. Confidence to walk into the gym. Confidence to try something new. Confidence to put themselves first for an hour a few times each week.

The physical changes matter, of course.

But seeing women go from “I’m not sure I can do that” to “I added more weight today” is one of the best parts of coaching.

We’re now halfway through this Athena cohort, and I couldn’t be prouder of the effort these women are putting in.

The best bit? They’re only halfway there. 💪

Nobody puts money into a pension expecting to need it tomorrow.

You do it because you understand that one day you’ll be grateful you started.

Strength training works much the same way.

The sessions you’re doing today are building a stronger, more resilient future version of yourself.

A version who can travel, play with grandchildren, carry shopping, stay active and remain independent for longer.

That’s why strength training isn’t just exercise.

It’s one of the best long-term investments you can make. 🔱

One of the biggest myths that still stops women from strength training is the fear of “getting bulky.”

The reality?

Building large amounts of muscle takes years of consistent training, progressive overload, enough food to support growth, quality recovery and, often, genetics that favour muscle gain.

What strength training actually does for most women is:

🔱 Improve strength and confidence

🔱 Support muscle mass as we age

🔱 Improve bone density

🔱 Support joint health and function

🔱 Improve balance and stability

🔱 Help maintain a healthy metabolism

🔱 Make everyday life feel easier

For women navigating perimenopause and menopause, maintaining muscle isn’t just about aesthetics.

It’s about protecting your future health, independence and quality of life.

The goal isn’t to become smaller.

The goal is to become stronger, more capable and more resilient.

And trust me… most women are capable of lifting far more than they think.

I often get messages asking whether Athena is an in-person class.

Athena is actually an 8-week online strength programme designed for women navigating perimenopause, menopause and beyond.

The programme includes structured strength training, coaching support, check-ins, exercise demonstrations and education designed specifically for this stage of life.

The online format allows women to train flexibly around work, family life and existing schedules — while still receiving guidance and support throughout.

Athena was designed to make structured strength training more accessible, realistic and sustainable 🔱

Strength training doesn’t need to be extreme to be effective.

Research consistently shows that structured resistance training performed a few times per week can significantly improve strength, muscle mass and overall health.

During perimenopause and menopause, this becomes even more important.

The goal isn’t to do more and more.

It’s to train with structure, progression and consistency.

This is the method that Athena is built on 🔱

Shoutout to client Cheryl who’s deadlift photo I used here. She hit a great PB on the axle this week 👏

This wasn’t built in 8 weeks.

This is the result of 18 months of consistent, structured strength training.

A goal was set — and over time, with the right approach, it was achieved.

This is what long-term strength looks like.

Not quick fixes.
Not shortcuts.

Just showing up, building gradually and trusting the process. 🔱
