Client progress

Truth be told I'm not a fan of before and afters. When me and set a plan it wasn't based on aesthetics.

This is why we accumulated data through testing.
•Becky's deadlift improved 22.5kg - lower body max strength
•She got 9 more push ups in a minute - upper body push endurance
•Held on for 6 more seconds while hanging 90 degrees - upper body isometric endurance
• improved her distance in 12 mins on the bike by .53 of a km - aerobic capacity

All in 8 weeks.

Do you know what the biggest improvement of Becky's was? Confidence in her own body in order to perform better at Brazilian jiu-jitsu while dealing with multiple sclerosis.

More than just statistics the ability to improve athletic qualities in order to perform better every time she steps on the mats IS THE GOAL and we have only just begun.

She now trains more than ever, is no longer afraid of injury and is rapidly improving her Jiu Jitsu.

Well done. Now keep going.

In combat sports like BJJ, when skill is matched strength can determine the winner.

You want to be competitive, take your time to get strong.

Treat your strength training like you do your practices.

Competitions are back and something I get asked about is what weight category to fight at.

When fighting in BJJ you usually weigh in, in the gi and a few hours before you step on the mats.

Often people want to fight in the lightest weight category possible and leave it to the last minute to try and cut the weight.

Its not an issue if you only have a few pounds but if you are sitting firmly in the middle of two brackets here's my advice...

• Get the weight down months in advance, in a very modest calorie deficit. In a large calorie deficit your performance in training will suffer, fatigue effects your ability to learn and retain skills. Specific skill work for BJJ is paramount.

• Avoid cutting water weight if you can. Dehydrating yourself before you step into competition will severely hamper your performance.

• If you don't have alot of time for that don't bother fighting in the weight below.

Why? Because unless you are a professional athlete, you don't get paid to compete.

A gold medal is great but in reality you are there to test yourself and your skills, fighting someone a few kgs heavier may not be as bad as you think, the consequences aren't dire.

The short or long term effects of being malnourished and dehydrated to enter a competition isn't worth the £30-60 price you pay for that gold/silver/bronze medal.

I often get asked by athletes especially nearing competitions why they start feeling overly fatigued and if it's normal.

I ask what they are doing differently and the usual answer is they have an increase in training (volume and intensity) and a change to their diets. (Eating clean bro).

If this sounds familiar here's what you can learn from my daughter.

Mali was in intensive care the first few weeks of her life and when my wife was trying to establish breast feeding the nurse on shift told us that to breast feed takes energy, and if the baby doesn't get enough food she will be to tired to feed. A viscous circle.

My point is calories matter, cleaning up your diet is not a bad thing but considering the densities of foods chicken and salads probably aren't going to cut it if you're training hard multiple times a week.

Less food + more training = negative energy balance. So essentially starving yourself.

If that negative energy balance is too much you're going to feel the lethargic and fatigued.

In BJJ where skill work is paramount to your development, training under fatigue will severely hamper your learning ability and could potentially lead to injury or burnout. Not what you want if you're training for competition.

Make sure you're fueling your body to suit the demands. Adequate protein and carbohydrates and if you need to cut weight for competition, have a minor deficit and do it months before. Cutting water weight when you weigh in on the day of the fight will lead to a detriment In performance.

If your goal is to get better at Jiu Jitsu that is.

It seems obvious but to get better at Jiu Jitsu, you must do Jiu Jitsu.

Training to or near to failure requires a lot of volume. Lifting a high amount of volume elicits high amounts of fatigue. (Hence the training splits back and bi's ect)

Going into a Jiu Jitsu training session while under such fatigue can severely hamper your performance. Under performing at the sport you are intending to get better at will slow your progression and potentially lead to burnout.

If you want to get better at a sport, quality training sessions make a big difference. If you supplement that training by lifting weights make sure it's doing just that and doesn't break you before you step on the mats.

Yeah you.

The KISS principle states that most systems work best if they are kept simple rather than made complicated.

It's easy to get consumed with the amount of information out there, so many different training methods and the small snippets of "in camp" training methods posted on social media by professional athletes prompting everyone to presume that going HAM is the only way to train.

Most likely you are not a full time athlete, and a good way to improve your athletic qualities is to lift weights a few times a week using basic movement principles Squat, hinge, push, pull, carry.

Improving your strength in these lifts can have big performance gains on the mat.

Now get lifting.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a tough sport, but improving apon these 3 physical qualities as well as the skill work on the mats will improve your performance substantially.

Strength - Not only will getting stronger improve your quality of life as you age but when skill is matched, strength can be a deciding factor on who wins and loses in a match. Generally the stronger the opponent the harder they are to deal with. We all have them in the gym.

Flexibility - Being folded up in precarious positions is part of the game. Your joints ability to withstand those positions under load (active flexibility) will be a deciding factor to wether or not you get injured. Either now or in the future.

Body composition - Like it or not BJJ is a weight orientated sport. If you are leaner with a higher percentage of muscle mass, not only will that give your body the ability to produce a greater force (power) but help you be the bigger stronger person in your weight bracket.

Where do you sit in the Venn diagram? What areas can you improve to try and sit firmly in the middle?

Welcome to the world Mali.

Amalia Peggy Hall was born on Friday the 24th September. My 🌍 ❤️

Me and my wife are made up. Its been a rollercoaster of a few weeks but we couldn't be happier.

We are so lucky to have the Mali spent the first two weeks of her life in special care.

Everyone from the midwife's in day care, to the labour ward, to the theatre and then finally SCBU have been incredible. I am so grateful mum and baby are happy and healthy. Thank you 💕
