For some reason I always get excited when another species pops up! I'm so fortunate to guide on some of the very best game angling waters in the country, the trout and grayling fishing is generally the reason folks come in this direction.
Danny was treated to something a little different for his first fish of the day though, when this big old chub took a sz24 Orange Tag fished on a duo rig. Not what we expected, but a very welcome start to what turned out to be a great day on the water. Peacock Fly Fishing Club stretch of the Derwent once again showing us just how healthy it is!

Something a little different for me, over in the Fens recently. My good buddy Robbie Northman has been mastering catching specimen rudd on lure fishing kit, something which we dabbled with a while back.

We've been taking about doing a fly session for a while, and the stars aligned a few weeks ago.

A trip in blistering sunshine through the Fens, as a guest of local rod Dan, meant we'd be hopefully be able to spot the rudd shoals from a lightweight boat and approach them quietly.

We had an idea on fly selection, as Rob and Dan have been catching them on lures no bigger than 50mm. I chose a selection of Fulling Mill jig streamers, designed for trout fishing, to provoke a reaction. In truth, I was guessing, but Robbie assured me they'd 'probably' work fine 👀

It was a blowy day, which made spotting fish and then making the casts harder, but my trusty 8' 4 # rod was just about capable in the conditions.

The guys put me on some great fish, and even after a dozen or so in the net, their predatory response still shocked me! The dream was a fish pushing 3lb, but multiple fish approaching 2lb made me for fascinating and engaging day, a real school day for me. Huge thanks to both Rob and Dan for their invite and help!

William and his friend Rob have been making the journey from Norfolk to Derbyshire for years, and have both caught some cracking fish, but they've never caught the Wye quite 'right' during the mayfly season. Usually they've been a week too early or a weekend too late.
Amongst the stormy showers yesterday we put that right. William caught a fish that it feels like we've been chasing for the last ten years - a true trophy fish from Wye waters. The sz10 mayfly looked like a midge in the mouth of this fish!

The river Lathkill never gives up it's secrets too willingly. These are the the most wild of wild trout, in the clearest of clear water. But if you take your time, work your fish out, fish from the correct position, make the perfect cast, and have a little luck on your side, it can be the most rewarding of waters.
That's what David and I did to catch this spectacular specimen, on a recent day on water. How he didn't miss the take I don't know, it took an age - I'd definitely have missed it!

No fish rising yesterday during a guided session on the Dove, but during the grannom flurries we found that the AB Caddis Grub fished at 3/4 depth was the only nymph we needed! More info in the comments ⬇️
