REPORT & INTERVIEWS: Wilson and Rimmington win at West Pennine Road Club 10

Simon Wilson produced a stunning upset to win the open category at the west pennine road club 10-mile time trial on Saturday, with Rebecca Rimmington delivering an impressive ride to win the female category in Lancashire.
In claiming victory here, Wilson defied the pre-race Spindata predictions that had George Peden (PB Performance Coaching) winning in 17-29 compared to Wilson’s predicted 18-10.
HUUB Design WattShop rider Wilson instead took top spot in 17-45, seven seconds quicker than Peden in 17-52, with Chris Smart (GTR Return to Life p/b Streamline) taking third spot in 18-29.
On his win, Wilson said: “I am pretty pleased with that one.
“I have just realised it’s probably my second fastest ever which pretty nice after more than 20 years in the sport!
“There was a strong tailwind on the way out which made the return pretty grim but think I delivered the effort well.
“George is a classy rider having won the National 25 in the past so I was expecting him to beat me and I was a bit surprised to win.
“It was a nice promotion by West Pennine RC with a prize presentation at the end.”
Rimmington (Tactic UK Women's Race Team) is gradually returning to the bike after health problems and delivered in style with a time of 22-12 seeing off 360 cycling rider Katherine Swithenbank in 23-46 while Liverpool Phoenix CC’s Janet Fairclough took the final spot on the podium in 24-21.
Rimmington was also the only female rider on a road bike, with Keith Melvin (Rock to Roll Cycling Club) the top-placed open category rider on a road bike in 21-29.
“I'm super happy with the ride,” said Rimmington after the event.
“It was great on the way out in that tailwind but on the flipside a bit grippy in the headwind on the way back.
“It is no secret that I've got quite a few health problems at the moment so every time I'm able to pin a number on is a win in itself.
“Hopefully I'll be able to do a few more events this season as I still love riding my bike.
This 10-mile event, run on the L1015 course, is an out-and-back circuit that starts just southwest of the A6 and proceeds along the A590 in a south-westerly direction, encircling the roundabout on Lindale bypass and retrace along the A590 in a north-easterly direction to finish just short of Levens Bridge.

‘A nice day out racing at Seacroft Wheelers RR, some fast racing with attacks out of the corners but nothing that stuck resulting in a bunch sprint at the end. Unfortunately got a little over excited and went to soon in the end and despite being well positioned throughout the race effed up the sprint.’

Congrats to for a brilliant ride with a face full of in the RR at the weekend after a rainy Bickerstaff the day before!

PREVIEWS: They say that teamwork makes the dream work, and that is especially true at this Sunday’s National Team Time Trial Championships in Gloucestershire, where the best trios will be in action on a 25-mile course near Maisemore.
Team Bottrill are defending their 2023 titles in both the female and open categories, with Kate Allan, Alex Clay and Emily Martin back to ride again, while the Team Bottrill men’s team has Axel Dopfer and Jake Sargent back in action but this time with Rob Francis joining them in place of boss, Matt Bottrill.
But pushing them for the title will be the HUUB Design WattShop trio of John Archibald, Simon Wilson and Joshua Jackson. Jackson formed part of last season’s silver medallist team, while Archibald and Wilson will add some real power to their team.
Third last season, trainSharp Cycling return in 2024 with Tim Torrie and Ollie Peckover being joined by Andrew Brinkley.
Other female teams to watch out for include Tactic UK Women's Race Team with Rebecca Rimmington, Cara Rawlinson and Isabella Torrie, as well as FTP Racing team have Josie Harcourt, Laura Pittard and Floren Scrafton in their line-up.
The event is promoted by Gloucester City Cycling Club and uses the U72 course from near Maisemore to Ledbury and back.
Elsewhere it’s the Welsh CA 100-Mile Championships near Raglan in Monmouthshire, with both open and women’s defending champions Chris Gibbard (FTP Race Team) and Roxy Woodfield (Ludlow Brewery Race Team) down to ride Sunday’s event.
Woodfield is going for a third consecutive victory in the women’s event, but will have tough competition from Kim Barfoot-Brace (Team Bottrill), Corinne Clark (360VRT) and Claire Emons (a3crg).
Gibbard is hoping for a fourth Welsh 100 title in the open event, but his competition is likely to come from 2022 winner Anthony Jones (VMCC powered by Y Beic) and Tom Thornely (FTP Race Team) who was third last year.
In Hampshire it’s the Tandem Tart 10 promoted by Sotonia Cycling Club over a ten mile course near Lyndhurst, and raising money for the ME Association’s Ramsey Research Fund.
Nineteen tandems will take part including multiple national record holders Rachael Elliott and Ian Greenstreet (Newbury Velo) and event organiser Mary Corbett with Paul Burnage.
The event also includes solo and two-up events as well as tandems.
Also on Sunday it’s the North Tyneside Riders CC 50-mile event near Cramlington in Northumberland, which is also the Northumberland and Durham CA Championship.
After her victory in last weekend’s Sunderland Clarion 25 Joanne Rea (Blaydon Cycle Club) is expected to be quickest female once again, while in the open category GTR Return to Life p/b Streamline veteran John Routledge is tipped by Spindata to take the win, although Daniel Kane (Muckle CC), Adam Smith (Team Kirkley Cycles) and Kris Whitelaw (Vector Racing) might have something to say about that!
There’s also a 50-mile event in West Sussex, with Sussex CA the host club.
Paceline RT’s Pat Wright looks set for the win there, while Brighton Mitre Cycling Club’s road biker Cris Coxon won’t be far behind.
There’s another great field for the Cambridge CC Viking 50 on Saturday, with Team Bottrill team-mates Emily Martin and Kim Barfoot-Brace warming up for the following day’s events with a ride in the event near Cambourne and expected to be quickest females.
Hart Performance Coaching’s James Jenkins is tipped by Spindata to win the open category, while Chris Mcnamara (Sigma Sports Cannondale Race Team) and Hadyn James (BPC FLOWBIO Race Team) will also be going for glory on the F2/50 course.
Saturday’s other events include the Kent Valley Road Club 10 near Levens in Cumbria, where two top juniors are expected to dominate.
Sebastian Grindley (North Cheshire Clarion Cycling Club) and Joe Cosgrove (Team Bottrill) are expected to leave the others battling for third spot on the podium, while Karen Bailey ( Lancashire RC) and Diana Davidson (Dundee Wheelers CC) will fight it out for the female prize.
Also on Saturday it’s the Redditch Road & Path Cycling Club 10, with Alex Dowsett (Nopinz) and Tom Ward (Ward Performance UK.com pushing for the win near Flyford Flavell, while in-form Denise Burrows (AeroCoach Ltd) looks likely to win the women’s prize.
