The Flourish Formula

The Flourish Formula Bespoke business coaching and mentoring to grow your creative business with confidence You’re busy, busy working and fitting everything in.

⭐ Does any of this sound familiar? ⭐

You feel overwhelmed on a regular basis. It’s affecting your ability to be creative or fulfil your ambitions. You struggle to stay motivated or feel in control, because these days it always feels like there’s just too much to do and it's hard to know what to prioritise. Some days, you crave a simpler existence. On the worst days, you don’t care.

⭐ Why does i

t matter so much? ⭐

If you’re feeling overwhelmed on a regular basis - even ONCE a week - you are putting your business and your health at significant risk. Your overwhelm could destroy everything you’re currently working so hard for. Overwhelm doesn’t just go away, and your ability to cope with feeling overwhelmed becomes less effective over time. And you’re developing negative patterns of thinking that will keep you stuck.

⭐ So, what do you need to know? ⭐

No matter how busy and apparently productive you think you are, overwhelm will cause you to waste time, energy and money because of the way you are thinking, feeling and working. It may be showing up as working on the wrong things, micromanagement, perfectionism, procrastination, forgetfulness, worrying, insomnia, feeling increasingly isolated, moody and less and less satisfied...

What may be less immediately obvious is the physical impact of stress and insomnia, including high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and obesity. Ultimately, put up with feeling overwhelmed long enough and you’ll just stop caring about your business or anything much at all.

⭐ What can you do about it? ⭐

There’s a LOT you can do, but if I was to put it all into a list this in itself could be overwhelming – so I’ll give you some highlights...

• Stop being busy doing and make more time for thinking (strategically about yourself and your business)
• Get to know yourself better; understand your core values and shape your business to better suit who you are
• Think bigger – return to your purpose, vision and ambition
• Have meaningful, constructive conversations with others who share your issues
• Make yourself accountable to at least one other person who you respect and do not want to let down. Counter to what you might be thinking: ‘I don’t have time for this!’, dealing with your overwhelm needn’t add to your To Do List, because you’ll be making different decisions about what you are spending your time and energy on.

⭐ How I can help you ⭐

I offer you the ability to overcome overwhelm through coaching and small group workshops, where you’ll have constructive, powerful conversations like you’ve never had before. You’ll implement practical and pragmatic techniques to tackle the issues and be held accountable for your actions. You’ll feel heard, understood, supported, re-energised and able to make changes that stick. You’ll change how you approach your business, re-connect with your passion for your work and better understand how you are going to achieve your ambitions.

⭐ Why work with me? ⭐

I have been where you are. I’ve lived the misery of perpetually feeling overwhelmed when I was running my garden design business at the same time as being a freelance corporate communications consultant. I know the cost and, having closed my garden design business after seven years, I have learned much about the solution. Having requalified as a business coach, I’ve spent the last four years working with creative women to turn around their thinking and approach to running their businesses. My coaching and workshops have been designed to reduce your overwhelm – you’ll start making a difference straight away

⭐ What makes what I offer different? ⭐

Everything is live (not pre-recorded) and bespoke to your needs. All the techniques are practical and pragmatic, and we implement them together. You’ll be in a supportive environment with other creative women business owners who really understand what you are experiencing. You’ll develop a better understanding of who you are (your values, motivational traits, strengths etc.) that means you can build a better business that really suits you.

'Twas the night before Christmas... and you're still glued to your phone thinking about work?!

I urge you to unwind, recharge, and embrace the joy of genuine downtime.

As someone who learned the hard way after burning out in my garden design business, I've got some tips to help self-employed go-getters like you truly switch off this Christmas holiday.

(This is a summary of my newsletter - if you'd like more detail DM me and I'll send you the newsletter.)

1. Prepare to switch off:
Create a To-Do List, get everything out of your head, and set clear priorities. What's urgent? What can wait? Stick to your deadlines, then down tools, and truly disconnect.

2. Get a second phone for work:
Invest in a second mobile for work to avoid unexpected calls, etxts and emails during your precious time off. A small price for peace of mind!

3. Take some "me" time:
Amidst the holiday hustle, it's okay to prioritize yourself. Plan something special—whether it's diving into novels or indulging in guilt-free me-time, set boundaries for yourself and others and enjoy.

4. Deep play:
Engage in 'deep play'—something absorbing and pleasurable. Whether it's crafting, dancing, or hosting a themed party, find what takes you out of yourself and into joy!

Wishing you a restful Christmas break!

See you on the other side, refreshed and ready to rock a fantastic 2024!

Very best wishes X

I was very late to social media.

I used to have a colleague who would spend time on Sundays batch writing his posts and I couldn’t imagine doing something quite so dull with my weekend!

In Spring 2022 I had 125 connections, which in the social media scheme of things is definitely Billy-no-mates.

Yesterday, Nicola Rennie became my 4,000th connection. It’s great to be connected and let’s have a virtual one-to-one to celebrate and get to know each other!

I only use social media for work, but I get far more out of it than I imagined I would, and I have met so many interesting and inspiring folk who I would never have otherwise come across.

I have a message for all my connections: A very big thank you to you for connecting with me; I look forward to getting to know you better.

And a message to my current non-connections: let’s connect! 😅

December is such a weird month, don’t you find?

I wonder if much of it gets wished away.

Do you remember as a child all you wanted was for Father Christmas to arrive? I used to stand out in the playground looking up at the sky hoping to see his sleigh and reindeer.

I don’t do that anymore 😕

But I am counting down. I’ve only got 7 days’ more work before a well-earned break. Far from wishing it away, it’s because I have a lot to fit in between now and then and I’m wondering how I’m going to do it.

And then of course, there’s that strategic thinking I need to do to reflect on what went well this year and what didn’t, setting 2024 objectives and defining the things I want to be different next year.

But I have promised myself a hard stop on the 15th December and I’m going to hold myself to that. There’s no need to panic, January is a good month to be doing this strategic thinking too.

And that, for me, is a very different mindset from when I ran my garden design business, feeling on the edge of overwhelm most of the time. I would have changed my plans. Continued to work until I felt everything was done and I could finally relax – well, ‘relax’ might not be the right word as my focus would turn to Christmas preparations instead.

I’m pleased and relieved to say these are old behaviours. Some new habits are hard won, but worth their weight in gold.

How are you enjoying the whole of your December?

Is networking part of your marketing mix?

I’m not selling networking here, but one of my targets over the last 12 months was to go to a networking meeting every week. (I haven’t always hit this target, but I certainly attended many more meetings than if I hadn’t had this goal to aim for.)

Ultimately you go networking to forge new relationships that one way or other might lead to new business, but as a business owner, you’ll know there are many other perks. I’ve met some fabulous folks who have and will become part of my tribe (lucky you 😉).

I’ve met some brilliant experts, like Dan Blythe of Rockit who, when I met him at a Surrey Chambers of Commerce networking meeting in a pub garden on a glorious summer’s evening, generously agreed to run a workshop about all things digital marketing for my clients.

Roll on a few months later and here he is in full flow with my clients (sincere apologies Dan for the random screen grab). Dan was so informative that the workshop over-ran significantly because we were asking so many questions and, frankly, we could have kept him there a lot longer!

Thank you very much Dan. I hope you’re recovered from your expert brain-picking! And I am looking forward to continuing the conversation.

I'm curious, what has networking done for you this year?

‘Tis the season AND ALL THAT.
I’m curious to know what’s your December shaping up to be like?

Is December a boon for your business, and are you powering through work until the last minute, or are you sneaking in a bit of productivity in between Christmas parties or writing-off December completely?

I have just under two weeks of work left in December so there’s much to do. I have client sessions booked, a number of marketing related projects I’d like to complete and some strategic work too. In fact, when I think about it, it’s going to be tight!

And I had a call yesterday from a potential client looking for a business coach, so not everyone is completely distracted by Christmas and putting significant decision making off until January just yet.

So, I’m curious, is December good for your business or all a bit messy?

Do you have great expectations... or are they really a bit ordinary?

In my newsletter this month, I share with you my experience of self-limiting expectations and, if you're like me, what we can do about it.

Here’s a summary of the steps to break free from that small thinking:

1️. Identify the root cause: reflect on the origins of your expectations. Are they truly yours, or influenced by others?

2️. Challenge negative narratives: acknowledge negative thoughts, but surround yourself with a support system that encourages big dreams.

3️. Embrace a growth mindset: challenges are opportunities for growth. Your potential is not fixed - it's much more exciting than that!

4️. Set realistic goals: dream big but set achievable milestones. Celebrate each step, building confidence along the way.

5️. Seek mentorship: connect with mentors who've faced similar challenges. Learn from their experiences to stay on course and motivated.

6️. Cultivate self-compassion: be kind to yourself. Setbacks are part of the journey so learn and grow from them, embracing challenges with self-compassion.

I urge you to think bigger! So what are you going to do about it?!

And if you’d like to read the full newsletter DM me 😊

So what works? And what doesn’t?

I’ve been reviewing my year before I get caught up in the weirdness of December, looking at what’s worked and what hasn’t worked out quite so well.

I hit a bunch of personal goals, like looking after my health and I’m chuffed to bits about that – despite the temporary lapse with my mince-pie addiction.

I hit a whole load of business targets.

And, most importantly of all, I did my best to deliver for my clients.

But it’s been a tough year. I’ll be honest with you; I didn’t hit my financial targets.

So, I’m giving a lot of thought to 2024 and what I will be doing differently. My theme will be to simplify stuff. I’ll be looking to reduce noise and clutter and exploring if there are simpler ways that I could be doing things.

It’s the perfect time of year to review and reflect on the fun, fulfilment and frustration you’ve had in 2023 and decide on your theme for 2024.

What’s it to be?

Are you a con artist ###X?!

You sent me a connection request saying:

“We’re a team of LinkedIn Marketers helping business coaches to get 90K+ views and a 30-40% revenue boost in just 90 days.”

WHAT?!

There is so much I could say about this, like why on earth would I want 90,000 views? But I’m not standing for this fraudulent cr*p.

While this may seem like an obvious con to me, a business owner who is desperate to generate more leads might be tempted when they get offers like this that they want to believe.

Keep it honest. Keep it real. And the old adage stands, if it sounds too good to be true, it very probably is.

Pay attention! This is a wonderful lesson we could all learn from folks who experience ADHD...

My work with clients with neurodiversities consistently shows me that rather than bending these folk to neurotypical ways of thinking and behaving, how much ‘normal-thinking’ peeps could also benefit from the strategies that those who are neurodiverse use to get the best out of themselves.

One example is the acronym INCUP.

This identifies the significant motivators for those with ADHD: Interest, Novelty, Challenge, Urgency, and Passion.

For someone with ADHD, if you get one or more of these motivators involved, they’ll be far more engaged and focused.

But this acronym doesn’t only apply to those with ADHD does it?

How could you apply this to your work or life in general on a daily basis to get you motivated, keep you motivated and keep some of those balls in the air?

And if you could do with some support, let’s have a conversation.

22/11/2023

What are the best bits about being a business owner and working for yourself?

For me, one highlights has to be choosing who I surround myself with.

And some of those great people belong to the business book club I attend once a month.

While we normally meet online, this month some of us discussed ‘Immunity to change’ by Kegan & Lahey while doing an art class in Sangeeta’s studio.

Shout out to Celia Rizothanasi, Karen Mannion, Silvia Del Corso, Kate Le Marechal and Sangeeta Weatherley.

We had so much fun!

And, despite a lot of flannel and puffery, at its heart the book ‘Immunity to change’ sets out a good technique to understand and overcome your resistance to change 😊

Surround yourself with marvellous people!

With many thanks to Sangeeta for her video compilation – sorry you’re not in the video Sangeeta!

Sometimes it's hard to feel grateful.

You know it’s good for you. I know it’s good for me. But just sometimes!

I’m slogging away doing all that persistent, consistent, showing-up stuff and reminding myself I need to recognise and reward my effort, in a currency other than mince pies, and reflectively journalling to embrace my learning with gratitude... etc etc etc.

And then I have to go out for another walk in the rain with my dog who is even less enthusiastic than I am.

But I recently learned something that made me feel VERY grateful indeed.

232 million years ago in a time we call the Carnian Age (pre-dinosaurs) it rained everywhere for two million years.

So if you didn’t know that already, it’s my gift to you! Don’t say I never give you anything 😀
