Farewell to the Old Social Club – The End of an Era
Although the building has stood derelict for many years, it was still sad to witness the demolition of the old Social Club on Market Street. The memories held within its walls cannot be underestimated. Through some of the darkest years of the Troubles, this once‑busy building offered light, laughter, and a sense of belonging to our community.

It wasn’t just the building — it was the people. Those who managed it, those who supported it, and those who simply walked through its doors found joy, comfort, and companionship. Many great people took significant financial risks to keep the club going, such was its importance to Keady and the surrounding area.

We remember all the brilliant men and women who organised the social life of the club: the darts teams, the bingo nights, and the unforgettable music from local bands — Tommy and Margaret, the Haugheys, Kenny McCone, and many more. Kenny was famously hard to get started, and even harder to get stopped. And of course, the resident “one‑man, one‑song” entertainers, including Dermot O’Neill the Barber, and the late Vivian McKee — may God rest him.

The club hosted celebrations, commiserations, and more than a few post‑mortems. It was a place of joy, a place of togetherness, and for many, a place of sanctuary. On Saturday and Sunday nights, it was a door that simply couldn’t be passed. As ladies and gents made their way home up the hill, a “last wee drink” was often required before heading towards St. Matthew’s.

The building itself has a long history. Over sixty years ago it belonged to the Ancient Order of Hibernians before the GAA took it over, adding another chapter to its story in our town.

And so, as we say farewell, we remember the good times, the laughter, the music, the friendships, and above all, the remarkable people who gave so much to so many. We thank and salute you all, May God Bless🙏🙏 A building gone but memories to live forever!

The Keady GAA Cash Call has now been changed to Monday 14th September.

Due to the Minor Boys playing in the football Championship on Monday, we have decided to push the Cash Call back a week so we can support them, while also taking into account our volunteers’ other commitments during the week.

💷 Cash Call will take place on Monday 14th September at 8.30pm.
