First time learning the Hang clean - roughly 6mins and 15 reps with the bar later and the shapes / positions achieved are a great start.

Long term athlete development - for youths it’s about improving an individuals movement quality and across the range of movement patterns. It’s not just about the short term success you get by sticking to limited movement patterns and increasing the load (there is a time for this)
🔅Coaching approach
We broke the movement down into 3 phases and used external cues and analogies.
Before anything was given, I showed the start phase and end phase and then asked him to get into those positions and just try the movement 🏋️♂️ after this we used the cues below, used the rest periods to reflect and then refocus between sets with direction given for each set.
Start Phase
*be a gorilla 🦍
Pull phase (2nd pull)
*explode like a rocket 🚀 to the ceiling
*rub your ears with your shoulders as you explode
Catch phase
*stamp down on the floor hard as we sit
*imagine you want to elbow someone out the way in front of you fast
These cues were not given all at once, they were layered on once he executed a phase with ease. We also discussed what each cue / analogy meant to him as we were going through the process - if he wasn’t able to associate to the cue / analogy then I would of explored different ones.
🔅As coaches it’s important to remember that what we say and don’t say matters. The more said, the less likely the movements will be executed with any real intent as the mind will be on over drive, especially when learning a new skill. This early stage of learning is known as the cognitive stage (this is based on the 3 stages of motor learning)
Nick Winkleman has a fantastic book called ‘The Language of Coaching’ - an incredible resource I’d highly recommend all coaches to go check out.
