BROTHOCK SHOTOKAN KARATE CLUB

VOLUNTEERS' WEEK 2026

Dear Volunteers, Supporters and Friends,

As we mark Volunteers' Week, I would like to take a moment, on behalf of Brothock Shotokan Karate Club, to express my sincere thanks to everyone who gives their time, energy and support to our club.

Whilst karate training may take place on the dojo floor, the reality is that our club could not function without the many people working quietly behind the scenes. Whether you serve on the Organising Committee, assist with fundraising, support events and competitions, help with administration, coach classes, provide transport, prepare refreshments, take photographs, organise raffles, maintain facilities, or simply step forward whenever help is needed, your contribution is valued and appreciated.

I would like to make special mention of those who hold key responsibilities on behalf of the club, including Wendy Whyte (Child Wellbeing & Protection Officer), Deborah Black (Deputy Child Wellbeing & Protection Officer), Jason Middleton (Licensing Officer) and Chris Grewar (Treasurer). Their commitment, professionalism and willingness to accept responsibility on behalf of the club helps ensure that Brothock continues to operate safely, effectively and in the best interests of our members.

That said, I would love to thank every volunteer personally by name. However, experience tells me that if I attempted to do so, I would inevitably miss someone who has made an important contribution to the club. Please know that your efforts have not gone unnoticed. Whether your contribution is visible to everyone or takes place quietly behind the scenes, you know who you are, and you have my sincere thanks and appreciation.

The success of our club is not measured solely by grades, medals or trophies. It is measured by the positive experiences we create for our members, the opportunities we provide for young people and adults, and the welcoming community we continue to build together. Every volunteer plays a part in making that happen.

Over the past year alone, we have celebrated our 40th Anniversary, hosted major competitions, expanded our community programmes, supported new initiatives such as Guardian Girls and Young Leaders, delivered First Aid training, developed new instructors and continued to invest in the future of the club. None of this would have been possible without the dedication and commitment of our volunteers.

Volunteering is often unseen and rarely seeks recognition, yet its impact is felt throughout every aspect of club life. Your willingness to give your time helps create opportunities, friendships, confidence and memories that will remain with our members for years to come.

To every instructor, committee member, parent, supporter, volunteer and friend of the club, thank you. Your contribution, no matter how large or small, helps make Brothock Shotokan Karate Club the special place it is today.

On behalf of all our members, please accept my heartfelt thanks and appreciation during Volunteers' Week.

With gratitude,

W. Wales

🥋 OUR YOUNG LEADERS 🥋

Just a brief update regarding our ongoing “Trading Places” initiative.

Firstly, a huge thank you to all of our Young Leaders who have taken part so far — Archie Cargill, Flynn Mitchell, Lily Souter, Lucy Bunch, Eadie Hunter, Arran Wilkie, Skye McPherson, Findlay Boland, Lily McPherson, Lucy Petrie, Jake Malcolm and Cairn Mackay 🙏

The initiative is designed to give our Young Leaders the opportunity to plan and deliver full classes themselves, helping develop confidence, leadership, communication, and presentation skills, while also recognising the fantastic knowledge and ability they already possess.

One of the biggest benefits has been that it also allows our senior instructors and coaches the opportunity to train themselves — something which can often be difficult when regularly leading classes week in, week out.

So far, the standard across the board has honestly been outstanding.

The Tiger Cubs sessions delivered by Lucy, Lily and Eadie have been superb, with excellent enthusiasm, patience and communication with the younger children ❤️🥋❤️

Archie and Flynn have continued to impress every time they have stepped in front of a class. Watching them return to lead Tiger Cubs classes having started there themselves years ago has been genuinely special and provides a fantastic example to the younger children of what can be achieved through consistency, commitment and hard work.

Arran, Skye, Lily and Lucy have also all done exceptionally well, showing real maturity, confidence and leadership qualities while delivering classes and communicating with students of all ages and grades.

A special mention also goes to Jake Malcolm, Arran Wilkie and Lily Souter for the excellent sessions they delivered at our Forfar club. All three showed great confidence, preparation and leadership, delivering well-structured classes and doing a fantastic job engaging with and coaching the students throughout.

On Thursday evening, Findlay Boland delivered the Brown & Black Belt class and, quite honestly, his session was top drawer.

The class focused on Heian Nidan, Heian Yondan and Bassai Dai before moving into sparring work during the second half of the session. What impressed me most was not simply the technical content, but the way Findlay communicated throughout. His delivery was calm, confident and well structured, and he showed a very natural ability to teach and explain.

Rather than simply identifying faults, he consistently looked to build people up with positive coaching points and clear explanations on how techniques could be improved. His communication with senior grades was excellent throughout, and he projected himself extremely well for someone of his age.

Like Cairn’s session previously, this is not praise for the sake of it. Findlay was genuinely excellent and should be extremely proud of himself. His confidence, preparation and ability to lead a room full of senior grades was outstanding.

What has perhaps impressed me most throughout this initiative is the standard shown by every single Young Leader who has participated. As every adult knows, standing in front of your peers and leading a group is not always easy, yet every one of them has stepped outside their comfort zone and represented both themselves and the club brilliantly.

The future of the club is certainly in good hands ❤️🥋❤️

🥋 TRADING PLACES INITIATIVE – CAIRN MACKAY 🥋

As many members will know, we are currently running our “Trading Places” initiative, which gives our Young Leaders the opportunity to plan and deliver full classes themselves.

The objective behind the initiative is not simply to develop better karate students, but to help develop confident young people with leadership, communication, and presentation skills — qualities which will benefit them throughout life, both inside and outside the dojo.

On Thursday evening, 2nd Dan JKA Black Belt Cairn Mackay delivered the Brown & Black Belt class — and quite honestly, his session was absolutely top drawer. This is not simply an attempt to boost his confidence or praise him for the sake of it — he was genuinely excellent.

The class focused on the 5 Heian Kata, along with footwork and pad drills linked to freestyle kumite. What impressed me most was that Cairn wasn’t simply regurgitating combinations or copying what he has previously been shown. He had clearly planned and structured the session himself. The pace was excellent, the transitions were smooth, and he projected himself confidently throughout.

The Brown & Black Belt class is perhaps intrinsically motivated by nature, and arguably one of the easier groups to teach due to the experience level in the room. Nevertheless, Cairn’s delivery, confidence, structure, and ability to lead senior grades was outstanding.

Personally, I’ve travelled and paid to attend seminars by so-called experienced instructors and, hand on heart, Cairn delivered a better organised and more engaging session than some of them. He was really, really good 👍

Some feedback received afterwards:

“Hi Billy, I just wanted to say how good Cairn’s session was tonight. Such a well-balanced, well thought out class with super confident delivery. Astounding when you consider his age. He could go as far as he wants to with his karate. It’s clear who he’s learned from which is testament to how well you’ve trained him. He’s a star.”
— Gordon

“What an outstanding session from Cairn tonight, Billy. He is a huge credit to himself, you and the club! Cheers”
— Matthew Fairlie

Cairn should be extremely proud of himself. His confidence, maturity, and ability to communicate with senior grades was exceptional, and he is a fantastic example of what can be achieved through years of consistent hard work and commitment ❤️🥋❤️

🥋 GUARDIAN GIRLS SELF-DEFENCE COURSE – BROTHOCK SHOTOKAN KARATE CLUB 🥋

Today saw the successful launch of our first Guardian Girls Self-Defence Course at Brothock Shotokan Karate Club, with approximately 25 women attending the opening session at our Arbroath Dojo ❤️

The course is being led by Brothock Instructor Deborah Black, supported by experienced Karateka Caroline Swankie and Monika Mackay 🙏

Debs is a Japan Karate Association 2nd Dan Black Belt, Scottish Karate Governing Body-qualified coach, Guardian Girls qualified self-defence instructor, senior lawyer within a legal firm, and is currently studying to become an Advocate — bringing together professionalism, compassion, intelligence and strength in a way that perfectly reflects the ethos of the Guardian Girls initiative.

🌍 WHAT IS GUARDIAN GIRLS?

Guardian Girls is an international women’s empowerment and self-defence initiative launched in partnership with the World Karate Federation (WKF), the Koyamada International Foundation (KIF), and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

The programme was developed to help empower women and girls through awareness, confidence building, practical self-defence skills, and education surrounding violence prevention and personal safety.

The Guardian Girls movement is now operating across the world, with Scotland playing an important role through Commonwealth Champion and European Medallist Amy Connell, who was appointed by the WKF to create and lead the Guardian Girls self-defence curriculum globally.

For more information on the international Guardian Girls initiative:https://guardiangirls.org

🇱🇻 Last year, Debs travelled to Riga, Latvia, as Scotland’s sole representative on the Guardian Girls Instructor Programme — training alongside instructors from across Europe and further developing the knowledge and understanding now being delivered here in Angus.

Importantly, this is NOT a Karate class.

It is a practical self-defence and confidence-building course designed specifically for women aged 14+, focusing on:• Awareness and prevention• Boundary setting• Confidence and posture• Practical escape and protection skills• Understanding stress responses• Building assurance in real-world situations

The sessions are welcoming, supportive and adaptable for all abilities, fitness levels and health conditions, helping create an environment where participants can learn, grow in confidence and support one another.

One of the most pleasing aspects of today was the atmosphere within the dojo — supportive, positive and encouraging, with lots of laughter alongside serious and important learning 😊

As a club, we are extremely proud to see Brothock Shotokan Karate Club playing a small part in an initiative of genuine international importance.

Too often, Karate is viewed simply as punching and kicking. In reality, true Karate should help build stronger people — physically, mentally and emotionally.

This course reflects that philosophy perfectly.

A huge thank you to Debs, Caroline and Monika for giving up their time and expertise, and also to all the women who showed the courage and confidence to step through the dojo doors this morning ❤️

We hope this is just the beginning of the journey for many who attended today — whether continuing through the remainder of the Guardian Girls programme, joining our Ladies Only classes, or progressing into Karate training itself 🥋

Brothock Shotokan Karate Club continues to welcome new members of all ages and abilities.

Sometimes the hardest part of any journey is simply taking the first step

Just a brief update regarding our “Trading Places” initiative.

Firstly, a huge thank you to Archie Cargill, Lucy Bunch, Lily Souter, and Flynn Mitchell for taking part so far 🙏

The initiative is designed to give our Young Leaders the opportunity to develop confidence, communication, and leadership skills by planning and delivering full classes themselves. It also helps recognise the fantastic skills they already possess, while hopefully inspiring younger members to aspire to follow in their footsteps.

The overall objective is not simply to create better karate students, but to help develop confident young people with the ability to communicate, project themselves positively, and step outside their comfort zones — all valuable life skills which will benefit them far beyond the dojo.

Lily’s session at Forfar was excellent. She showed a real ability to break combinations and sequences down clearly and explain them in a way everyone could understand. Her confidence and composure in front of the class was superb ❤️🥋❤️

Archie and Flynn, both 11 years old, taking the full Tiger Cubs class was genuinely quite special to watch. They both started in Tiger Cubs themselves around six years ago, so to now see them return and lead the class was fantastic — and a real example to the younger children of what can be achieved through consistency, hard work, and commitment ❤️🥋❤️

Lucy was also outstanding. Her confidence and communication skills were excellent throughout, and during the Q&A she spoke really well about how karate has helped improve her as a person. She also reflected positively on mixing with people from both ends of town, different age groups, and learning to communicate with older and younger members alike — she added all of which has helped build her confidence❤️🥋❤️

Honestly, given their ages, we’ve been blown away by the maturity, confidence, and communication skills they’ve shown so far. As every adult knows, it’s not easy standing in front of a group of your peers and delivering a presentation or leading a session — yet they’ve all stepped up exceptionally well and should be very proud of themselves 😊
