Gameweek 8 saw the 1st XI travel to Lindal Moor. Deciding to bowl first, Appleby’s tight bowling and fielding restricted the hosts to 138, 2 wickets each for four bowlers plus 2 run-outs. A bad day at the office for Appleby’s batsmen followed as they were dismissed for 93, only Brabbins (37*) forming any sort of resistance to the Lindal attack as the 1st XI’s 336-day streak without defeat in the league was brought to an end.

The 2nd XI faced Kirkby Stephen for the 3rd time this season on Friday night in the T20 cup. Batting first Appleby made 123-9, Wilkinson 34 and Dawson 23 with good contributions. Appleby went on the win by 34 runs, bowling the hosts out with an over to spare, Verhoeven took 2-11 as all bowlers picked up a wicket.
On Saturday the 2s travelled to Leven Valley. Leven Valley made 70 all out as Verhoeven took 5-12. Appleby eased to victory by 10 wickets inside 17 overs, Beckwith (52*) and L. Lightfoot (15*) the unbeaten partnership.

The development side came second best at Westgate 3s. Tom Barr (2-9) and Artem Sukhoteplyi (2-17) best with the ball

Gameweek 7 saw the 1st XI make the train journey to take on Settle 2s. Losing his first toss of the season, Fothergill and his Appleby side were asked to bat first. Allison (69) and Brabbins (70) made a 100 partnership to set up the innings. Fothergill then hit an unbeaten 85 off 51 balls to take the score to 271-4 from 45 overs.
Settle started well and after 20 overs were ahead of Appleby’s score at the same stage, but regular wickets hampered the hosts. All bowlers chipped in with wickets before Alfie Errington, making his 1st XI league debut, took the last 3 wickets in consecutive balls to take his first hattrick and give Appleby the victory by 160 runs. Thanks to Settle for keeping our supporters well hydrated throughout the day!

The 2nd team faced a home double-header against Penrith 2s. On Tuesday night Appleby came out on top in a dominant 8-wicket win in the T20 competition, L.Harrison taking 4-18 & Wilkinson 30*, but were unable to get over the line in the 40-over cup on Saturday, losing by 2 wickets despite 36 from A.Little in his first competitive outing since 2023 and 3 more wickets from Harrison to give him 7 wickets in the week.

On Sunday the Development side hosted Carnforth 4s. Batting first, Brakewell (77*) and T.Barr (38) gave Appleby 208 to defend. Wickets were shared between the bowlers as Appleby won by 51 runs.

Gameweek 6 saw the 1st XI back at home on a sunny afternoon against Haverigg. Being asked to bat first, Haverigg made a fast start. Appleby stemmed the flow of runs but Haverigg were looking in a good position at 109-3 before a batting collapse, in which Appleby took 6-28, saw the visitors all out for 137. Sutton and Sweeney with 3 wickets each.
After tea, Sutton (59) and Brabbins (41) put 106 on for the first wicket. Despite Haverigg hitting back with 3 wickets, Appleby eased to a 7-wicket win.

The 2nds faced local rivals Kirkby Stephen in the 40-over cup. Batting first, Kirkby made 189, Errington taking 3 wickets. The score was 37-2 when Carl Hodder came to the crease, a 152-run partnership with Wilkinson (50*) only ended when Hodder (95) attempted to reach his century with the scores tied. Appleby reached the target with no further damage to win by 7 wickets.

On Sunday the 3rds headed to Shireshead 4ths and were made to field first in the heat of the day. After a tough 40 overs in the sun, Shireshead made 136-7. Spin trio Jody Howard-Carter (2-28), Leah Brown (2-27) and Harry Cowin (3-29) doing the damage. Appleby reached the target with 3 overs to spare, contributions from all batters, supported by A. Lightfoot (58). A brilliant advert for developmental cricket in the Westmorland League.

Next Saturday, the 1st XI are away to Settle in a 12pm start. Train leaves Appleby at 10:12am. All support welcome! 🚂🍻🏏

On Saturday, the 1st XI made the trip to Morecambe, skipper Fothergill opting to bowl first on a green wicket. Allison and R. Davidson picked up a wicket each before Morecambe’s middle order resistance was undone by the two spinners, Sweeney taking 3-24 while Sutton took his first 5-fer in England, finishing with 5-33.
Chasing 102 to win, Appleby reached the target with 17 overs and 7 wickets to spare. Kirkpatrick 36* and Fothergill 27* top scoring.

The 2nd XI hosted Holme 2s in the 40 over cup. Bowling first, Appleby dismissed Holme for 86, with wickets shared between the 6 bowlers. Verhoeven impressive on debut with 2-7.
It looked to be game-on with Appleby falling to 48-5, but returning captain Beckwith saw Appleby to win with a quick-fire unbeaten 33.

On Sunday, the 1st XI travelled to in the Lancashire Cup. Again, opting to bowl first, Appleby failed to capitalise as the hosts made 253-9 from their 45 overs, Sutton again best with the ball with 2-14.
After a superb tea, Appleby set about the total but always seemed just behind the run-rate as they fell to a 26-run defeat, losing the final wicket in the last over. Brabbins (68) top-scoring. Thanks to Cheshire Lines and good luck in the next round.
The 3rd XI were beaten by 9 wickets at Burneside.
