The Antrim Karate Club part of the Ulster Karate Association (UKA) teaches traditional WadoRyu karate. The UKA has a long tradition of technical excellence and is the most successful group of clubs in N Ireland in terms of championship successes. It has produced N Ireland, All Ireland, British, European & World Champions in both Kata (forms), and Kumite (fighting). For many years now its members h

ave made up a considerable part of the Northern Ireland Karate Squad/Team. The Ulster Karate Association was formed in 1981 and has/had clubs in L’Derry, Ballybofey, Dromore, Belfast, Carrickfergus, City of Belfast YMCA. St Joseph’s Carryduff, Antrim & Larne is its latest. UKA is open to everyone (aged 5yrs upwards) wishing to learn WadoRyu karate. WadoRyu is the 2nd most practised karate style in the world today. Many students from other clubs and styles attend UKA clubs by arrangement and are most welcome. Those attending UKA clubs on a regular basis must take out an Ulster Karate Association Licence & Insurance and will be asked to show documentary evidence of their grade from their previous federation. They will also be asked to demonstrate their knowledge of karate to the Chief Instructor to support the grade quoted. All club members must train for the UKA Gradings (examinations). The syllabus can be downloaded from the UKA website http://www.ulsterkarateassociation.com

All club members must get the permission of the Chief Instructor (through the club instructor) to enter a tournament, training session or any other activity not directly organised by the UKA/UKC/WKC. Failure to do so is contrary to the policy of UKA and will invalidate insurance cover and may terminate membership. All clubs teach the recognised World WadoRyu syllabus including Kumite and Kata. UKA is affiliated to the Ulster Karate Council and The World Karate Confederation and works with Sport N Ireland, Coaching NI and the N Ireland Sports Forum and subscribes to the Ulster Karate Council Child Protection policy. UKA promotes character building through the teaching of maxims such as:

Character perfection; Sincerity; Effort & Endeavour; Respect for others & Self-control. There are an estimated 50,000,000 people practising Karate today. It has been proven that the practice of Karate has many benefits such as:

Increase in confidence and self worth
Discipline
Improvement in health and fitness

Congratulations to all who took part in the recent KNI Open Championships ‘26 held at Queens PEC Belfast.

With competitors from all over the North and South of Ireland, Italy, Scotland, Poland and Holland. It was a fantastic opportunity for all to grow in confidence.

Well done to S. Gui and J. Reid who placed second in their categories. Fantastic achievements.

One of the highlights of the day was having our students watch the current World Kata Champion in action, Samantha Von Lokven, take centre stage and show all there why she is the World Champion.

Fantastic to have this level of karate here in our capital city! Thanks to KNI for the opportunity to compete and witness such high standards.

Some of the AMAZING karate competitors who took to the stage last Saturday at the Karate Northern Ireland Open, held in the prestigious Queens PEC Belfast.

The open saw over 450 entries and ran from 9am-6pm. There were teams from Carlow, Nass, Kerry, Belfast, Dromore, Bangor, Donegal, Scotland, Italy and none more important than our very own Antrim Karate Club!!!

The big event saw a cadet mixed team (male & female aged from 14-17) take on a combined team from the North and South.

Italy took the win, but it was a magnificent display of quality, strong spirited karate.

Here we can see medal winners Oliver, holding his Silver medal along with Josh, holding on tightly to his Gold, meaning he is the current KNI OPEN CHAMPION for his age group!

An amazing display of skill, fitness and perseverance for all who competed.

Now on to the next test… the grading for next belts.

Antrim Karate Club entered some of its new 8th Kyu (yellow) belts for their first ever go at it. They did so well and took home some silverware.

Some of the other competitors continue to develop their time on the mat and gain experience, with a load of silverware including a bronze for the girls Team Kata and silver for the girls Team Kumite.

Well done to everyone, the road to the KNI OPEN 25 is well and truly on its way.

Super proud of how far this young lady has come. An AMAZING achievement Livi Fry Livi Fry Personal Trainer, you are an inspiration to all in the club …

Livi put in the work and got the rewards, she went there and fought some of her best fights, she controlled the fights as best she could and secured SILVER & BRONZE on her own, with no coach in her corner she was on a mission to achieve and she did just that!!!

The GOLD will certainly come Livi and we all fully believe you will achieve it in good time and on your own merit through your hard work and dedication!!!

Good luck in Dublin at the HYROX event on Sunday.

This evening, we were invited to to celebrate Livi’s accomplishments at the World Championships.

It was wonderful to witness the dedication she brings to the kids at the club, just like the same commitment she shows with her coaching at The Unit.

Well done Livi, we are all so proud of you ⭐️

As many know, Livi Fry travelled to Argentina with Amy Adair and Terry Boyle to compete in the IKU World Karate Championships.

After a long days travel on Tuesday, Livi & Amy settled in and checked out the venue on Wednesday evening in preparation for their first of 3 events.

Kata was up first, having achieved a solid score in her kata, Livi missed out in getting through to the final 8. Her score was a big improvement on her previous attempt 2 years ago.

Friday came the kumite, Livi’s strongest event.

Deciding to enter the heavy weight section for this event, she knew she would be rolling with the punches. She fought well beating 2 Brazilian ladies to make her way into the semi final where she faced a very strong and tall Italian, being 1 point down within the fight, Livi came back to win it 5-1 with some quick hands and head shots.

This set her up for the final, a Polish contender. This competitor was taller and slightly quicker than Livi, but she dig deep and gave the fight of her career.

Achieving 2nd place at an event like this is by no means a failure, having come 4th two years ago Livi was in a mission to get the silverware.

Saturday saw Livi again in fighting action, this time in OpenWeight Kimite. Livi was put out in one of the earlier rounds by the overall winner of the event; however this allowed her to content for 3rd place. Having trained for this event for the past 6 months, she was not going to be defeated, she fought through all the fighters the overall winner beat and obtain a bronze medal.

We are so so proud of this young lady who is an inspiration to many young people in the club, and demonstrates that by working hard you will achieve.

Now for some downtime and sightseeing in preparation for the next 2 big events.

One of which is the Hyrox in Dublin at the end of November.

The other…. You’ll have to wait and see.

Well done Livi, we can’t wait to see you back home.

Enjoy your travels
