LIONS 2-0 Hessle Rangers

With many games falling short due to the weather recently the Lions entertained a strong Hessle Rangers side on a cracking Easter Sunday 🥚

Aiming for the double over our opponents the game started tightly, half chances came and went with neither side able to break the deadlock or wanting to give up possession easily.

After J.Tarbotton had only covered the first 10 minutes of M.Owen’s wages for the day it was the latter who took it upon himself to have a breather on the side after telling the ref to F***off. 🫥

A.Mills produced some fantastic saves throughout to keep the scores level 0-0 HT.

A slight reshuffle in the second half and back to having 11 men on the pitch some good link up play between J.Tarbotton and J.Thompson resulted in R.Wood tapping home from close range to give the Lions the lead.

Clearly in control at this point some more eggcellent play from the Lions ended in R.Wood scoring his 2nd of the day and tripling his tally for the season 🤩🤩

A solid performance from the lads rewarded with a well deserved 3pts 👏🏼

Not many games left but hoping to end the season on a high!

Back at the lane this week entertaining the leagues bottom side who after a massive squad overhaul in the summer seem to be not many games off calling it a day. Nevertheless a chance to put 3pts on the board which we took with both hands and extended our lead at the top of the table.

Took a short while to get going but once K.Walker set us on our way the floodgates were well and truly open then it was just a matter of how many we would end up with.

A debatable offside interference resulted in Rosebourne breaking through and getting what only ended as a consolation.

After another 7 players got in on the scoring action the job was done although we should have ended the game with 20+ in what seemed like a training game, A resounding result moves us 3pts further ahead in the table.

A week off now before we are back at the lane V North Ferriby Sporting a big test and a side who are sure to be up there come the end of the season.

It's with sad new we have lost someone so dear to us . Mike "gaffer" smith we will all miss you dearly. A kind funny (sometimes loud ha) guy who always put the team before himself.he also helped put the foundations down for the club we are today we will never forget all you did for the club and for always been there for the boys and myself rip my friend will raise a glass tomorrow , all our love to Mike's family and friends UTW x

Willerby Jags 2-2 LIONS

The Lions went into this game top of league and aiming to extend that by taking all 3 points, In the end we settled for 1 point in what turned out to be a frustrating second half.

The home side started quickest taking an early lead with a huge slice of luck as the ball looped over the goalkeeper.

Soon after we found ourselves 2-0 down after a race to the ball with the Jags attacker beating A.Mills to the ball and tapping into an empty net.

However play swung in favour of the Lions and chances before the half came with P.Skelton striking the bar from 35 yards, N.Holdsworth tried his luck as did M.Bajer and we eventually forced a corner which fell to J.Tarbotton 12 yards out and he volleyed into the bottom corner to give us hope. 2-1 HT

The second half started and the Lions continued in the ascendancy controlling majority of the play, creating lots of chances including 2 tame free kicks but were unable to trouble the goalkeeper. The equaliser finally came after G.Tomlinson beat the offside trap drove through the middle and finished excellently!

So many chances to win the game but we just weren’t clinical enough on the day to seal the 3pts coming away frustrated.

On a positive note we fought back from 2-0 down with both G.Tomlinson and O.Foster among others stepping up with commanding performances and we remain top of the league!

Back at the lane next week V Rosebourne 💀

Redemption day….
The Lions welcomed West Hull Athletic to the lane aiming for revenge from the first fixture between the sides.

Quiet from both sides early on a heavy pitch Captain P.Cooper converted to give us the lead and from then on it became a very gritty and dominating performance.

P.Skelton finished to make it 2-0 and soon after a fair few ill disciplined events took place West Hull received 1 red card and 2 sin-bins…. P.Skelton struck a sweet free kick on the stroke of HT and the away side ultimately finished the half with 8 men.

Continuing the form from the first half G.Tomlinson scored his first of the day with West Hull replying with what would only come as consolation in the end.

One way traffic! G.Tomlinson claimed his 2nd of the day with a simple tap in and J.Thompson added a sixth with a neat header.

Mix up at the back for the visitors allowed a Jay-Jay Okocha esque mazy run from don pablo himself J.Goldie from the halfway line who teed up K.Walker to finish things and put the lid on a convincing victory.

We sit top of the league at Christmas with plenty of hard work still to be done let’s see what the new year brings!

Hessle Rangers 1-3 LIONS

With many fixtures falling due to the weather recently the Lions were glad of an away tie at rivals Hessle on Wolfreton 4G.

An absolute dominant performance today from the off with the home side unable to gain much possession early on. With some calm build up play the Lions took the lead in the 20th minute thanks to a clever finish from P.Skelton who beat the keeper to a D.Crawshaw through ball and rolled it into the net.

More than deserved at this point with the Lions asserting dominance, D.Crawshaw played another nice floating ball into the box which evaded everyone but the unmarked P.Skelton who fired in at the back stick to extended our lead!

2-0 HT

In typical Lions fashion we knew we still had to fight to get the result, after a steady first 10-15 minutes of the second half we were stunned at the back, Hessle were handed a lifeline when the ball fell to there striker who made no mistake in halving the deficit.

Needing something special to seal it and knowing we’d be in for a tough final 30 minutes the Lions broke away and who else but striker P.Skelton collected the ball 30 yards out looked up and curled an outstanding finish into the top corner claiming his hat trick and a 10/10 performance on the day! Substitutions were made to see us over the line with P.Skelton and J.Thompson departing to a standing ovation from 2 men and a dog.

Turned over one of the best sides in the league today and to a man every single player played there part in a massive 3pts for the Lions.
