You’ve probably heard of Osteopenia and Osteoporosis, the process of bone loss, which affects us all as we age and can result in life altering fractures. You probably also know that practicing resistance exercises which challenge your muscle strength and stress your bones will help to reduce bone loss and improve bone density….BUT….you may not have heard of Sarcopenia the process of muscle loss, which also affects us all as we age, and has consequent effects not just health but also adversely affects body composition, bone density and increases risk of falls.
Sarcopenia starts around age 30, after which the body loses about 3-5% of its muscle mass every decade. These changes often become more pronounced by age 60 (accumulating over time and increasing to 8% per decade) and continue throughout the rest of our lives. And the good news? You can build bone AND you can build muscle. More good news is that the load you need to use is relative to your current ability/strength level and that in the studio we’re experts at adapting the load to make it appropriate for your current fitness level, health status and joint problems. If you have osteoporosis, joint replacements or general health issues we can adapt th exercises to make yours a comfortable and enjoyable experience so that you can exercise with confidence that you’re doing the right thing.
