Witney 5 - 36 Andover
On Remembrance Sunday, a small but determined Andover side of just 12 ladies travelled up the A34 to take on a strong and developing Witney team. Missing several key players and a full front row, Andover had to adjust their game plan to favour a more open, free-flowing style of rugby, a challenge the squad embraced with confidence.
From the kick-off, Andover looked composed and organised. The forwards laid a solid platform, giving the backs space to express themselves with flair. Despite this, it was the pack who opened the scoring: second row Ayzia Wilkins showed great agility to dart past two defenders, before Jade Minns-Cain powered through three more to notch up the first two tries of the day.
Kicking duties began with Keighley Black, who slotted a well-struck conversion before handing over to fly-half Lucinda Wheeler-Mallows for the remainder of the game.
Witney refused to back down, showing real determination and physicality through some strong carries in midfield. They spent nearly ten minutes camped in Andover’s 22, but the visitors’ defensive shape held firm. Through a series of turnovers and clever tactical kicks, Andover relieved the pressure and hit back. The backs soon added to the tally, with Back of the Match Phoebe Tombleson and fullback Lottie Morris both crossing the whitewash.
As fatigue began to set in for both sides, gaps started to appear in defence. Loosehead prop and Forward of the Match Emma Cooke was first to capitalise, breaking the line from Witney’s 22 and running in under the posts for her first ever try. Ayzia then grabbed her brace with another display of footwork and power. Both tries were converted by Lucinda, whose kicking accuracy continues to impress, extending the lead to 0–36.
To their immense credit, Witney never gave up. They finished the match on a high, working a fantastic team try to get themselves on the scoreboard.
It was a match played in great spirit, showcasing determination, teamwork, and respect from both sides. The Andover ladies can be proud of their performance, while we wish Witney all the best for the rest of their season.
