League game 8 : Andover 10 - 30 Didcot

Sunday saw us take on Didcot Valkyries at the Goodship ground. After they had put 37 unanswered points on us last time, the aim this time was simple: be more competitive and close that gap.

A 10–10 first half showed exactly that. We matched them well, stayed organised in defence, and took our attacking chances when they came. We unfortunately fell behind to allow Didcot to take the win in the second half, but it's certainly a step forward from the last result.

The effort and resilience was evident across the entire squad, especially in that opening half. We still have work to do, but the opinions of those playing, coaching and supporting was that this might have been the best all-round display of rugby quality that Andover Ladies have shown this season so far.

Due to our league opposition being unable to fulfil the fixture, Sunday’s original match was awarded as a walkover to Andover.

This didn’t stop us playing however, and massive thanks to Salisbury for stepping up at short notice to host us at their ground, meaning we were able to get out on the pitch for a friendly match.

The game was played in excellent spirit – hard-fought, competitive and with plenty of running rugby on display from both sides. A proper game of rugby enjoyed by everyone involved – exactly why we play the sport!

It was a big day for our ladies squad as they proudly represented the club both at home and on the road. While one side battled it out in a competitive home fixture, another travelled away to compete in a touch rugby tournament, showing great energy and depth across the squad.

A fantastic collaborative effort of women's teams saw players from Andover, Petersfield and Alton come together for a friendly but exciting fixture. The combined Andover & Alton side edged the victory with a score of 22–19.

Meanwhile, the Touch rugby team delivered a dominant performance at the monthly tournament away at Gosport&Fareham, playing four games in which they scored 15 tries and did not concede a single try, showcasing both attacking strength and solid defence throughout. The consistent performances secured first place overall.

Player of the tournament: Dana Shelley - slotting back in the team perfectly after some time away
Honourable mentions to Anna Krzyzanowska for scoring plenty, Clare Hollinshead for doing the hard yards in the middle in both attack and defence and Skye Vries-Morrison for a very assured debut tournament.

League game 7: Newbury 2s 65 - 7 Andover

Tough day at the office as we came up against a strong Newbury side last Sunday. We battled throughout and despite some sustained periods of strong defence we struggled to get a foothold in the game after the early try from Lottie Morris converted by Keighley Black.

Not the result we wanted, but we’ll own it and keep working 💪

With four tournaments played and five to go its time for a mid-season review of our Touch Rugby team.

This Sunday saw Andover take 1st place in the tournament hosted by Wi******er, which comprised 7 teams from 8 clubs from across Hampshire. This also places Andover firmly in first place in the league overall. A title we are defending for the 4th consecutive year!

Player of the tournament was awarded to one of our youngsters Eliza Meechan, for a relentless defensive effort that was instrumental in the fact that no tries were scored against us all afternoon.

If you fancy playing some rugby without the tackling and slightly less mud then drop us a message for more info and join us at training! For ages 14 and up

League game 6: Andover 19 - 12 Alton

Andover RFC hosted Alton RFC in their opening fixture of the league’s return leg. The first encounter between the two sides had very much been a game of two halves, and this second meeting proved to be no different.

From the kick-off, Alton applied early pressure and caught Andover off guard, scoring quickly and forcing the home side to reorganise. Andover responded well, however, producing a disciplined and relentless defensive effort to halt Alton’s momentum. The first half remained tightly contested, with Alton holding a narrow 0–5 lead at the break.

Andover began the second half strongly, capitalising on some Alton errors. This pressure was rewarded when Andover crossed the whitewash, with the conversion giving Andover the lead for the first time. Alton responded swiftly, regaining the advantage after a lost Andover lineout allowed them to break through the defence and score, making it 7–12.

Undeterred, Andover remained composed and committed to their game plan, using their fitness and forward dominance to apply sustained pressure. A strong forward-driven platform and effective ex*****on through the backs enabled Andover to score twice more, sealing a 19–12 victory.

Both teams displayed immense character in a highly physical contest. We wish all players who sustained knocks during the match a speedy recovery.

Andover RFC Ladies travelled to Salisbury on Sunday for their first fixture of 2026 in challenging wet and cold conditions. Despite the weather limiting opportunities for expansive, free flowing rugby, the match proved to be a competitive and spirited contest.

Andover, supported by players from Alresford RFC, began the game with determination. Salisbury, fielding a full squad, capitalised on the conditions and their depth to produce six well constructed tries over the course of the match.

However, Andover’s resolve never wavered. Through sustained effort and strong work rate, they were rewarded with points on the scoreboard late in the game, with the match concluding 30–5 in Salisbury’s favour.

A notable positive for Andover was the strength of their set piece throughout the game, which consistently performed well and will provide a solid foundation to build on heading into their next fixture, a league game vs Alton at home on the 18th Jan.

League game 5: Didcot 37 - 0 Andover

We're a little late posting this, but last weekend Andover Ladies travelled up to Didcot for the final game of 2025, eager to finish the year on a positive note. There was particular excitement within the squad at the prospect of fielding a competitive scrum for the first time this season, and this proved to be a real highlight of the match, providing a solid platform throughout the game.

Despite the final score line, Andover put in a determined and disciplined performance against a strong Didcot side. The forwards worked tirelessly, the backs came close a few times to adding some points and the whole team were able to hold out the well-drilled opposition for large sections of the match, showing real grit in defence and improved cohesion across the park.

As the game wore on, fatigue began to take its toll, and Didcot’s experience and organisation allowed them to find ways through the Andover defence. Nevertheless, there were plenty of positives to take from the performance, particularly the progress shown in the set piece and the team’s resilience against quality opposition.

League game 4: Andover 62 - 0 Crowthorne

On a cold Sunday at the Goodship Ground, Andover Ladies welcomed Crowthorne for their first meeting of the season The match was played in great spirits by both sides, but Andover’s experience and depth from the bench team allowed them to take control early.

From the kick-off, Andover applied heavy pressure on the Crowthorne attack, forcing a turnover that led to the opening points through a series of strong forward pick and goes. This early dominance drew the Crowthorne defence narrow, creating space out wide for Andover to exploit and run in several additional tries. The hosts went into half-time with a commanding 27–0 lead.

Crowthorne however showed tremendous determination and came out firing in the second half. They challenged the Andover defence repeatedly and broke the line on several occasions, but tireless scramble work from the entire Andover team kept them from crossing the try line. Andover continued to build on their momentum, adding five more converted tries to their tally.

Both teams displayed fantastic character and commitment throughout, and they were a credit to their respective clubs. Thank you to Crowthorne for travelling and we look forward to the return fixture later in the season.

Witney 5 - 36 Andover

On Remembrance Sunday, a small but determined Andover side of just 12 ladies travelled up the A34 to take on a strong and developing Witney team. Missing several key players and a full front row, Andover had to adjust their game plan to favour a more open, free-flowing style of rugby, a challenge the squad embraced with confidence.

From the kick-off, Andover looked composed and organised. The forwards laid a solid platform, giving the backs space to express themselves with flair. Despite this, it was the pack who opened the scoring: second row Ayzia Wilkins showed great agility to dart past two defenders, before Jade Minns-Cain powered through three more to notch up the first two tries of the day.

Kicking duties began with Keighley Black, who slotted a well-struck conversion before handing over to fly-half Lucinda Wheeler-Mallows for the remainder of the game.

Witney refused to back down, showing real determination and physicality through some strong carries in midfield. They spent nearly ten minutes camped in Andover’s 22, but the visitors’ defensive shape held firm. Through a series of turnovers and clever tactical kicks, Andover relieved the pressure and hit back. The backs soon added to the tally, with Back of the Match Phoebe Tombleson and fullback Lottie Morris both crossing the whitewash.

As fatigue began to set in for both sides, gaps started to appear in defence. Loosehead prop and Forward of the Match Emma Cooke was first to capitalise, breaking the line from Witney’s 22 and running in under the posts for her first ever try. Ayzia then grabbed her brace with another display of footwork and power. Both tries were converted by Lucinda, whose kicking accuracy continues to impress, extending the lead to 0–36.

To their immense credit, Witney never gave up. They finished the match on a high, working a fantastic team try to get themselves on the scoreboard.

It was a match played in great spirit, showcasing determination, teamwork, and respect from both sides. The Andover ladies can be proud of their performance, while we wish Witney all the best for the rest of their season.

League game 3: Andover 5 - 31 Newbury 2s

Andover hosted Newbury (on Sunday before last) in difficult conditions, with wind and rain that continued through the game, leading to what felt like a scrum every 2 minutes! As ever, Newbury brought a well-drilled squad but Andover dug deep to withstand the pressure as well as could be expected, with Lottie Morris managing to find a gap in Newbury's defence and getting some points on the board for Andover.

This is always a challenging match, but the home team made a significant improvement compared to the scoreline from the last time these sides met at the Goodship Ground. The game was played in great spirit, and provided the opportunity to develop some players in new positions, so despite the loss the team took several positives.

FOTM - Olivia Wells
BOTM(s) - Lucinda Wheeler-Mallows & Lottie Morris

Shoutouts also go to two players in their debut game for Andover - Zoe Moore and Porsche Laing!
