Thirty-one people answered, and nobody considered the horses' point of view.
There's a good discussion running this week on FB about whether DIY livery really works out better value. Fuel, hay, bedding, cover for the days you can't get there. All fair, and worth doing the sums on.
Hard not to notice that almost all the posts consider the question from the owner's point of view alone.
Ask the same question from the horse's side and the ledger looks different.
Start with turnout, because turnout is not one thing. A horse alone in a paddock, or over a fence from a neighbour, is turned out. He is not in a herd. He can't groom another horse or swat their flies, he can't sleep flat while someone else keeps watch, and he can't settle into a 'pecking order' and stop asking the question. Those aren't luxuries. They are how a horse regulates himself, and a horse on his own does none of them.
The rest follows. Movement all day rather than an hour of it. Grass, sky and weather. Company that doesn't clock off at six.
At Windmill Hill horses live out 24 hours a day across 35 acres of the Test Valley, in settled herds. New arrivals are quarantined, then introduced over the fence, then to one chosen companion, then to the group, avoiding injuries.
Full care grass livery covers twice-daily checks by someone who knows your horse, worming every twelve weeks including the wormer, six-weekly farrier trims, rugging to the weather, fly hoods, sun protection, and a written progress record. Winter hay is fed daily (charged separately). Ideal for the horse that is turned away — resting, recuperating, retired, or down after a hard season.
If you ride, there is a tier for that. Livery with exercise adds an agreed number of ridden sessions a week by Kate or by you, with your horse brought in from the field for you by arrangement — so you arrive and ride rather than spend half the visit walking out to catch it. Free use of the 60m × 30m arena and the show jumps. Individual sessions and hacks can be added to any package.
Prices on application.
Every horse here is handled by Kate personally — BHS qualified, RoR Recognised Retrainer.
Come and walk the fields and meet the herd before you decide?
