🎾 WHAT IS THE BEST SITE FOR TENNIS IN LESBURY? 🎾
As the old tennis court is now being used during the bowls season as a car park, a fair challenge is whether we would be better off looking for a new site? Isn't the old court in such a state now, that a fresh start with better facilities would be preferable?
Whatever the challenges with the old tennis court though, they would surely be far, far less than starting again from scratch. If a concern is the cost, how much do you think a new facility would be in comparison to relaying the court (which might not even be necessary)? If the concern is lack of demand, shouldn't you start small and show that demand?
This is not a new debate. The tennis courts in Lesbury were where the cricket ground is until 1955!. When tennis was at its peak in Lesbury (partially as a result of the problems at that time with the courts in Alnwick) different options were explored 25 years ago, including near the football pitch and off longhoughton road. Alternative sites were again considered in 2015. None ever got off the ground.
The tennis court may be imperfect but it proved to be fantastic for beginner, casual, kids tennis.
Councillor Phillipson who chaired the Construction Committee that built the court in the first place, defended the court in 2000, 26 years later, when the Lesbury Sports and Recreation Club were looking to build new courts and a bowling green elsewhere in Lesbury which the Parish Council didn't support:
🎾"We did of course accept that the bowling green and tennis court did not meet competition standards. Our objective was to provide facilities where residents could relax and enjoy themselves in very pleasant surroundings"🎾
That objective is surely one that could be realized once again.
