Niall Gallagher β€οΈπ€β€οΈπ€β€οΈπ€
We were gutted to hear that our coach, Niall Gallagher, has had to make the difficult decision to step away from coaching at ARFC due to a serious knee injury. Unfortunately, corrective surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation process lie ahead, and his focus now has to be on recovery.
Niall took over the reins from Henry Edwards in 2017 following one of the most successful periods in the clubβs history.
His first season in charge was a positive one. We finished comfortably mid-table in a highly competitive Caley 1 and reached the National Shield semi-final, coming agonisingly close to a second consecutive trip to Murrayfield. In a fiercely contested match against eventual winners Carrick RFC, we fell 20β10. On another day, things might have been very different, with four potential tries ruled held up over the line.
The years that followed were some of the toughest the club has faced. Momentum was lost, players drifted away, and we endured two difficult seasons, finishing second bottom before eventually being relegated to Caley 2. At times, we were struggling to field a side, and Niall often had to pull the boots back on himself. Heavy defeats came along the way, and many in his position would have walked away.
To Niallβs immense credit, he stayed, believed in the club, and kept driving standards forward. As players began to return, we came agonisingly close to promotion, missing out on the league title to Dundee Medics by a single point on the final day of the season.
Remarkably, that became a familiar story. Three of the following four seasons saw us lose out on the league title on the final day, proving just how competitive and consistent Niallβs teams had become.
Throughout his time at ARFC, Niall helped develop an exciting brand of rugby, built around attacking ambition, commitment, and togetherness. His teams played with confidence, scored some outstanding tries, and produced many memorable victories along the way.
More importantly, Niall has been a fantastic coach, mentor, and leader for everyone involved with the club. The respect and appreciation the players have for him speaks volumes.
We're incredibly sad to see this chapter come to an end, but we sincerely hope itβs not goodbye forever.
On behalf of everyone at ARFC, we wish Niall the very best with his recovery, and whatever comes next. Thank you for everything youβve done for the club.
Donβt be a stranger.
