✨ Meeting others promoting inclusion and accessibility in the outdoors at the CO summit!

We are grateful to have worked with so many amazing outdoor brands, mountain professionals and gear experts to bring the Connect Outdoors programmes to life. At the heart of it all, though, have been the amazing community partner organisations who have been instrumental in bringing their communities along on the programme. Thank you to the people at Yahyah’s Hub, Community InfoSource, Simon Scotland, UpMo and Soul Sisters for your dedication this year. And of course to all 45 participants who joined in the fun!

Happy holidays all, we can’t wait to see what adventures 2026 brings! ✨

The first Connect Outdoors summit was a huge success 🙌

We were joined by community organisations, outdoor brands, inclusivity experts, outdoor professionals and all-round lovely energetic folk striving to make the outdoors a welcoming and inclusive space. From connecting over food on Birnam Hill to lighting up a room with discussion of breaking down barriers to outdoor participation, we had a brilliant day. So here’s a taster in case you missed out!

Mega well done to Jo from Tiso for bringing this all together and for chairing a powerful panel; hats off to fellow panelists Laura from John Muir Trust, and ; a big thanks to the Tiso team and of course everyone who came along 🤩

As the sunny weather continues, we are enjoying the benefits of getting into the hills. Can you think of any you would add? Let us know in the comments!
✌️Connection - whether it’s time spent with friends, or finding the space to connect with yourself, hill walking enables connection.
🏋️Excersise - movement is good for you, and the hills beat any gym.
🔮Clarity of mind - being outdoors can ease a noisy mind and instil a sense of calm. Consequently, we at Mhor Outdoor have some of our best ideas on the hill!
🚌Access - there are so many walking routes that you can get to via bus or train from Scotland’s main cities. Watch this space for a post on some of our favourites 👀
⛰️Belonging - the hills are there for you to explore! In Scotland, we have the Right to Roam, which means that you can explore freely, so long as you look after the landscape.

We want to make an outdoor lifestyle possible for everyone in Scotland. If you are involved with an organisation working to support people’s wellbeing, or fancy a team building hike, get in touch!

Does your community have little or no access to the outdoors in Scotland?

We’re looking for up to five partner organisations to work with us to deliver a Connect Outdoors programme to their members!

Apply here: https://forms.gle/awJ9BtbgCqB7RZx19

Happy New Year!✨️

2024 has been the year of partnerships old and new.

Thanks to the Community Organisations who have taken a go at working with us to bring the outdoors to new communities and to the new hikers who have taken brave steps up mountains. And to our partners in the Connect Outdoors project, especially , who have opened doors for Mhor Outdoor to do so much more.

So in the words of Robbie Burns and in true Hogmanay tradition, let’s end this year and start the new with a wee verse of Robbbie Burns’ Auld Lang Syne:

We twa hae run about the braes,
And pu'd the gowans fine;
But we've wander'd mony a weary fit,
Sin' auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne.
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne!

Getting out of the city always makes for a fulfilling day, for both mind and body, even on cooler autumn days. On Saturday we headed up The Slacks, from Old Kilpatrick train station, with a group from Community InfoSource – an amazing charity working to support asylum seekers’ wellbeing.

We were delighted to share the joy of hiking and the season with the group. For many, it was their first time exploring outside of Glasgow. There was resounding enthusiasm from everyone, despite ‘Pea Soup’ weather and plenty of mud underfoot!

🍂 As the days turn darker and colder, remember that a dose of sunlight (even through cloud) and a bit of socialising can do wonders for feeling happier and more energised.

Smiles despite the soggy hillwalking conditions last Saturday, on our final hike with as part of the series! We were sad to say goodbye (for now) to the fantastic members who we have gotten to know over the summer through the hiking series ⛰️

On Saturday we took the bus from central Glasgow to Luss, to be greeted with heavy rain 🌧️

After checking the weather forecast, we could see that it was due to stop raining around midday. So we headed to for some tea, went over navigational skills (including compass bearings and route planning to account for the weather), and filled in the project evaluation survey. The rain eased off and we headed up the hill path to Beinn Dubh!

The wind and rain continued as we climbed higher, and so we made a team decision to turn around before the summit. This was a great opportunity to reflect on decision-making on the go and why we go into the hills. It's not always about reaching the summit, sometimes just making it out the door on a rainy Saturday and spending the day outdoors with friends is enough of an achievement! We were treated to lovely clear views on the way down as the sun came out (and took advantage to stop for a wee nap) 💤

As we waited for the return bus, we did a very important post-hike activity... Even more important than locating the nearest source of cake - stretching! By giving our muscles and joints the chance to stretch and relax after strenuous activity, we will protect ourselves from injuries in the future, increase flexibility and promote blood flow which boosts muscle recovery and repair, meaning no aching thighs on Monday morning!

We asked the participants about their experiences in the series...

"This was a super project. Really valued you giving this resource to help trans people get to go on the hills. Great to go in numbers for support."

"I loved how it showed us that you can get outdoors on hikes so close to Glasgow and don't need a car to do this."

We have loved getting out into the hills with such a brilliant group of people! We've got the last hike of the series with on Thursday then it's project evaluation time ⛅⛅

We asked Helen from to tell us why we should all get outside more 🥾

For people who haven’t grown up exploring the outdoors, or in whose community it isn’t the norm to go out hiking at the weekend, there can be a big question of “Why should I bother going walking?”

As Helen tells us, hiking is good for our brains and body. It can help us to sleep better, strengthens our immune system (meaning we get sick less often 🤧) and makes us feel happier.

Getting out for a walk can also be a good way to tackle difficult conversations. As you walk alongside the other person, it can be easier to talk about topics close to your heart in a neutral environment. As Helen says, “Taking a walk (and even better if you can have a listening ear on the walk as well) is a great way to decompress from what is happening, talking through some potential helpful tips and advice.”

Lots of smiles on our hike with on Saturday, gathering ideas for our How 2 The Hills project 🥾🏳️‍🌈

Eight of us got the train from Glasgow to Chatelherault Country Park, where we walked 10km around the Avon Gorge. For some of our group members this was the first time they have been out on a hike. The well-maintained path and excellent signposting meant the route was a great choice for an introduction to hiking.

When we look at who participates in hiking, LGBTI inclusion is lacking. Those part of the LGBTI community are 2.5 times more likely to experience mental illness than heterosexuals. A multitude of research indicates that time spent outdoors boosts mental wellbeing and decreases symptoms of anxiety. It’s super important that we find ways to dismantle barriers to hiking for people in the LGBTI community.

We asked group members about the barriers they face to getting outdoors. Some issues that were raised were around knowing what kit to bring, navigation and finding inspiration for routes. These discussions will help form the ‘How 2’ cards as part of this project.

Hear from some of our hike participants below about their experience of the day!

“This was my first lengthy country walk for several years. I felt it a bit unsure, however the lovely leaders, nice chats with fellow walkers along the way, plus being with nature and being well fed more than made up for that! We were so well looked after, I'd love to try this again.”

“It was great to be outside trekking around a new place in the beautiful Scottish weather, meeting new people and finding connection in an accepting space (and cleaning up a bit while we were at it). I for one am really grateful for the experience.”

Thanks for the bags which we used to collect litter on our way. When the outdoors bring us so many health and well-being benefits, it’s important that when we visit we not only leave no trace, but 🌱

We’re excited for our walk with in March, where we will be gathering more views and experiences of barriers to hiking ⛰️
