What a difference a week can make.

This time last week I was enjoying an impromptu “aqua aerobics” class in a pool in Corfu with new holiday friends. 😂

My fiancé and I had enjoyed a week of sunshine, laughs and cocktails and were looking forward to an evening having dinner overlooking the sea.

This week?

I'm sitting in my office watching the rain fall outside my window. ☔️

Who else plays the “this time last week/month/year” game?

I know I do.

When I was a single mum, I often found myself looking back at the past and thinking about everything that had happened to bring me to where I was.

After separation and divorce, I think that's something many of us can relate to.

We look back at how life used to be.

The things we wish had been different.

The choices we might have made differently.

The future we thought we were going to have.

But over time, I realised something.

If I kept looking backwards, I was going to miss what might be waiting for me ahead.

Because at that time, I couldn't have imagined some of the moments that would eventually become part of my life.

The people I hadn't met yet.
The places I hadn't visited.
The laughter I hadn't shared.
The experiences I hadn't had.

And a future I hadn't even begun to imagine.

So if you find yourself playing the “this time last year” game tonight, be gentle with yourself.

But maybe allow yourself to play another game too...

“What could this time next year look like?”
Because your past may be part of your story.

But there are still pages you haven't written, people you haven't met and moments you haven't lived.

And sometimes what feels like an ending...
is simply the place where a new beginning starts.

You don't have to have your whole future mapped out.

Sometimes, you just need to believe that it can be different.

Different from what you've experienced.

Different from what you expected.

And maybe even better than you once imagined.

You don't need to know exactly how you'll get there today.

Just allow yourself to believe that something wonderful could still be ahead of you.

What if your best days haven't happened yet?

What would you love your kids to believe about themselves as they grow up?

That their feelings matter?

That it's okay to ask for help?

That they don't have to stay in situations that make them unhappy?

That they can have boundaries?

That rest isn't something they have to earn?

That they are worthy of love, care and kindness?

I imagine we'd want all of those things for them.

And one of the ways our kids can begin learning these things is by seeing them lived around them.

Not perfectly.

Not every day.

But little by little.

When you allow yourself to rest.

When you ask for support.

When you speak kindly to yourself.

When you create boundaries.

When you allow yourself to enjoy your life again.

You're not only telling them what's possible.

**You're showing them.**

And maybe that's one of the most beautiful parts of choosing to take care of yourself.

You're giving yourself something you deserve...

while quietly showing them that they deserve it too.

When did you last do something simply because YOU enjoyed it?

Not because the kids wanted to.

Not because it needed doing.

Not because it was good for somebody else.

Just because **you wanted to.**

Somewhere amongst work, parenting, responsibilities and everything life asks of us, our own joy can quietly slip further down the list.

But your life is happening too.

You're allowed to laugh.

Have fun.

Make plans you're excited about.

Spend time with people who make you feel good.

And do things for no better reason than...

they make you happy.

This weekend, make a little room for something that belongs entirely to you.

What will you choose?

These are the steps that I take my clients through to help them eliminate the unhelpful thoughts, feelings and beliefs they’ve been holding on to from their previous relationships.

Why do they need this?

We can physically “move on” from a past relationship but when we’re (often unconsciously) storing the:

“I’m not good enough“
“I’ll never be happy again”
“Men/women can’t be trusted”
“It’s not safe for me to be myself”

We can never be truly happy.

When we release this from our nervous system a whole new life emerges.

You deserve to enjoy this and I’d love you support you on your transformational journey.

If you’re interested in knowing how we can create this new future together, get in touch for a complementary 30 minute chat so we can decide if I’m the best person to help you.

September often brings a change of rhythm.

The kids go back to school, routines return and, after weeks of making sure everyone else is okay, there can suddenly be a little more space.

So I'd like to ask you a question:

How are you?

Not the kids.
Not your ex-partner.
Not everyone else who relies on you.
You.

After separation or divorce, it's so easy to put your own needs at the bottom of the list, especially when you're determined to make sure your kids are okay.
But taking care of yourself isn't choosing yourself instead of your kids.
It's choosing yourself as well.

My September Linkedin newsletter, The Greatest Gift You Can Give Your Kids, explores why looking after your own emotional wellbeing isn't selfish and how doing so can actually help you become more present for the people you love.

If you've spent a long time making sure everyone else is okay, I wrote this one especially for you.

If you'd like to receive my monthly newsletter, you can subscribe in LinkedIn. And if there's a particular aspect of separation or divorce you'd like me to cover in a future newsletter, I'd love to hear from you.

As another month comes to an end, here's a little reminder for you.

You don't have to enter September with everything figured out.

You don't need a long list of things you're going to change.

Maybe simply take one thought with you:

Taking care of yourself doesn't mean you're taking something away from the people you love.
Your needs and emotional wellbeing matter. You're allowed to make space for both.

Tomorrow, I'll be sharing something very close to my heart about why caring for ourselves can also be one of the greatest gifts we give to the people who matter most.

Bank Holiday weekends used to feel very different for me.

In the early days of my separation, I found them particularly difficult.

I'd look around and see families enjoying the extra time together and couldn't help thinking about what had changed for mine.

I worried that my kids were somehow missing out.

And if I'm completely honest, there was sadness in seeing other families doing the things I'd imagined we'd still be doing together.

But over time, I began to see things differently.

Our family hadn't disappeared.

It had simply changed.

We could still laugh together, go out for the day and make precious memories.

Do absolutely nothing together and enjoy that too.

We were still a family and could be a very happy one.

I stopped measuring our family against what I thought it should look like and started appreciating everything that was still right in front of me.

So if this Bank Holiday feels a little different for you, I hope you'll remember:
A family doesn't have to look the way you once imagined for it to be filled with love, laughter and really special moments.

Whatever your family looks like today, I hope you find something to enjoy together this weekend.
