Was great to be able to finally "officialy" recognise Harley as an Instructor and give him his Instructor/Grading Officer certificate last night.

For then longest time Harley has been a valued member of our team always providing our members with guidance and coaching with a smile and sense of humour. It was nice to be able to hand him his NGB endorsement.

Let’s be honest...promoting someone who hasn’t earned it teaches them nothing.

No Instructor enjoys telling a student they’re not ready for a belt testing . But a real teacher stands firm. If they don’t, they’re not teaching value. They’re just selling rank.

In a culture of participation awards, many people think showing up and going through the motions is enough. It’s not. That is not how martial arts training works.

We teach the standards. We drill the basics and syllabus. You go home, study, practice, and return ready to prove you’ve mastered it. Only then should promotion to the next belt rank even be considered. Otherwise, we are failing to teach how achievement actually works.

There are no participation trophies in a good martial arts school. We push students to become better than they were yesterday. An Instructor must clearly define expectations and stand firm on them. If we don’t, we fail to instill one of the most important values martial arts builds: indomitable spirit.

That spirit is what carries students to heights they never imagined...both in their classes and in life outside the dojo.

It’s easy to spot someone who was handed a black belt instead of earning it. The fundamentals aren’t there. What’s tragic is that many of those students might have truly earned it under proper standards...and been GREAT had they had a good Instructor!

If you’re afraid to tell a student they’re not ready, you’re not helping them. Promotion should come only after the work has been done, the standards met, and the skills proven.

Anything less is catering to comfort instead of building character.

That’s how we see it.

An outstanding few days for all at Zanshin Shotokan Karate Union - Albrighton. Friday we had our grading session where 14 members successfully passed their tests to advance to the next level. With remarkable performances, not least by Ewan attempting his 1st Kyu Grading and leaving nothing to chance.

Sunday three of our youngest members went to Lincoln to take part in the Kofukan invitational Inter-club. Where they achieved remarkable results. Taking 2 golds and 1 bronze in their respective Kumite events. Isabelle also managed a solid Bronze in her kata event against some very talented opposition.

This evening Sensei Jordan went and trained with HDKI in crewe with Stuart Amos.

All told an eventful few days.

Thank you to all, who repeatedly provide me with opportunities to glow with pride

Are you looking to take on a new challenge in 2026?

At Zanshin Shotokan Karate Union - Albrighton, we teach both Children and Adults and have many families enjoying their training in a safe and friendly environment.

Our team caters for complete beginners through to seasoned competitors. Many of our students enjoy national and international competative success but competition is not nessisary and for many just learning and training in karate is award enough.

Using a blend of traditional martial values and modern teaching methods we have transformed many nervous children into confident individuals and team players.

We are currently accepting new adult members for our Friday 7-8pm session.

We also have limited spaces available for our junior classes Wed/Fri 6-7pm.

🥋 Grading sucess 🥋

Congratulations to those members who successfully advanced to their next grade at last night's session.

For some it was thier first grading and they took the first step on their journey, for others it was about proving they have what is needed to continue through the belts.

For one young man, it was a tough grind, displaying great fortitude and determination and proving beyond doubt he deserves the belt he earnt.

Very proud to be part of everyone's journey.
