In Yin, you can stay in Shoelace for five minutes, breathe peacefully, remain completely “still” (you know I don’t like that word 😵‍💫) and contemplate the very nature of existence…

But if your pelvis is rolling backwards and your hands are stopping you from falling over, it’s fair to say that your nervous system isn’t that impressed with your spiritual efforts 🧠😤

Most often, we are so focused on the idea of surrendering or stillness in a Yin pose that we forget to ask whether the body has actually been given somewhere it feels comfortable enough to surrender into. Know what I mean? 🫶🏽

Move the pelvis. Change the experience.
Then contemplate existence ✨

And if that doesn’t make sense don’t worry. I have a yin yoga teacher training that you can do online at your own pace 😀.
The link is in the bio 👊🏾🫶🏽✨

I teach anatomy for a living, so telling yoga teachers they probably need to learn less of it is perhaps not my greatest business strategy 😤😵‍💫. But here we are.

There’s an old idea in philosophy that knowledge isn’t the same thing as wisdom. Knowing more doesn’t necessarily mean understanding more, and it certainly doesn’t mean you know what to do with what you know 🧐
Anatomy is much the same 😳

You can know the Latin name for every bump, groove and dangly bit in the human body, but none of that matters if you can’t see the anatomy in motion, in front of you, in your students.

Learn anatomy to help you see better, understand movement better and teach better. Not to win a pub quiz against a physiotherapist. Although if that pub quiz ever happens, I’m absolutely entering 🫶🏽👊🏾

As you know, I can’t do anything without putting some sort of philosophical spin on it 😵‍💫😤😀

There’s an old Zen teaching about the finger pointing at the moon 🌑 . The finger is not the moon. It simply points towards something we’re being asked to see 👀.

We make the same mistake with yoga poses 🧐

We become attached to the form. Where the foot goes. Where the hand goes. Which direction the pelvis faces. Eventually, the instructions become the pose, rather than a way of exploring it. Know what I mean?!

So when another teacher changes your foot position, moves your hand or asks you to orientate your body differently, it doesn’t mean they’re correcting the teacher who came before them.

They’re pointing at a different moon 🌙 (a different outcome).

Change the position of a foot and you change the demands on the body. Change the position of a hand and you can change where force travels. Change the orientation of the pelvis and you change what the body has to organise around.

Same pose. Different intention. Different outcome 👊🏾🙏🏾

The brain 🧠 loves same, same but different. Familiar enough to recognise the pattern, different enough that it has to pay attention again.

The problem is that we have a habit of turning difference into hierarchy 😤😵‍💫

If two teachers teach something differently, we assume one of them must be right and the other must be wrong. But that’s far too simplistic.

A yoga pose isn’t one fixed thing with one correct expression. It’s a shape we can manipulate depending on what we’re trying to explore, challenge or experience.

So the question shouldn’t be “Which version is correct?” It’s “What is this version trying to teach me?”
🤷🏾‍♂️🧐👀🫵🏽✔️

Nothing says peace and presence quite like watching someone carefully present-ing their camera angle on the beach, hitting record, and instantly adopting a lotus pose for the Gram 🫣🤷🏾‍♂️

I’m sure her caption read, “A stranger AirDropped this while I was transcending.” 🫶🏽✨

Non-judgment? Look, I’m trying, but “yogis” just hand out way too much am******on not to judge. Honestly, I’m trying 😭😭

Love is existential ✨🫶🏽❤️🧐

You can read about it, study it, have someone explain it to you… but none of that will ever teach you what it is.
You have to fall into it yourself.

I think many people have misunderstood the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali in much the same way 🤷🏾‍♂️😵‍💫🤯

I had every intention to make loads of content whilst in Paros 🇬🇷. I mean it was a “work trip”. But I only managed a few 😵‍💫😤
Here I ramble on about one of my favourite poses. A hybrid 👉🏽 the Warrior Half Moon 🌙
If you forgot to breathe whilst doing it don’t worry. No one breathes in this one 😀😤🥵

One of the great paradoxes of being a parent is that I love this little person more than I ever thought possible, yet somehow I have to remember that he doesn’t actually belong to me 🤷🏾‍♂️🧐.

Kahlil Gibran wrote that our children come through us, but they are not ours ✨. They belong to life. I understand this as love without possession. Zaccy is another traveller who, for a little while, has been placed in my care. My job is to protect him, prepare him for life and help him become strong enough to eventually walk his own road.

But somewhere in all of that, something else is happening. Zaccy is raising me too 😵‍💫❤️

He expose’s my patience (or lack of), my fears, my need to control things and my attachment. He gives my life a sense of purpose he was never actually responsible for giving me, and somehow, just by walking beside his narrow behind, I have grown too.

And then comes the cruel and beautiful paradox of parenting 😵‍💫⚽️📍.

When they’re little, love means holding on. As they grow, that very same love means learning to let go 😭😤

And I already know that letting go is going to be the hardest thing I will ever have to do. But I’m hoping I will learn that along the way too 🫶🏽✨

If you are feeling stuck in teaching, it isn’t because of a lack of knowledge; it’s actually too much 😤🫣🤯. In Downward Dog, only 2 things need to exist: the foundation beneath your hands and the breath within ✨

Back bending in half moon isn’t WRONG. Nothing is really when it’s intentional. But I see far too many students back bend in half moon without realising. Take the punch 🫣😀 - engage with your core and now you are not just hanging in there pose, but really working 🫵🏽🫶🏽✨

Legend has it that Zen was born from the meeting of Taoism and Buddhism. Zen is the organic unfolding of who you are, not who you want to be. You can’t practise Zen and you can’t look Zen. Zen grows quietly from within, from the heart ❤️
