Fighting back – how Krav Generation empowers women and girls

Earlier this year, the BBC published a very sobering article about violence against women. Five years on from the murders of Sarah Everard and Sabina Nessa, horrific incidents that many hoped would act as a catalyst for change, we are still waiting for anything tangible to happen.

It’s not just the fear of being attacked on the street or in a park. Violence in the home accounts for many attacks on women, and recently released official figures show an increase in the number of victims of domestic abuse who commit su***de. Those figures also indicate a worrying trend towards younger women being subjected to abuse, and links are being made to how easy it is for people to access extreme po*******hy. Violence against women is being normalised – it must stop.

The government is introducing a range of measures to support female victims of violence, to stop abuse and prevent the radicalisation of young men. However, what’s really needed is systemic change and substantially more funding. In the meantime, charities and community groups do what they can with limited resources to support vulnerable females.

Self-defence training makes a difference
We support Your Sanctuary, a local organisation that supports victims of domestic abuse, so we’ve seen how women, who have lost everything by leaving an abusive relationship, are helped to rebuild their lives. And, knowing that early education is key, we work with schools and youth organisations such as Girlguiding to deliver engaging workshops focused on recognising danger and embracing the right to say ‘no’. Girls want to feel safe, and we agree that self-defence should be part of the school curriculum.

Learning to manage fear
At Krav Generation our self-defence training helps women and girls feel safer, more confident and more resilient. We use realistic, scenario-based situations to develop skills that are effective in the face of danger, including situational awareness and verbal and non-verbal communication to de-escalate situations.

Self-defence is not simply about learning physical techniques. At Krav Generation we develop the whole person by working on self-belief and mental resilience. Students learn to listen to their ‘inner alarm’, that instinctive feeling that something doesn’t feel right. And we work on training the brain to focus on survival rather than allowing fear to take over and panic set in.

It doesn’t matter how young or old you are. It doesn’t matter how fit you are. Our classes are fully inclusive – individuals may walk through the door, but they become part of a safe and supportive community.

Want to find out more about self-defence?
Alongside our weekly classes, we run female-friendly self-defence workshops and 1-2-1 private classes. If you’d like to find out more or join us for a free taster session, just get in touch!

WOULD YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO?

Hi, I'm Laura. When you look at this photograph, you might think, When am I ever going to need to know how to deal with a gun?
I sincerely hope the answer is never.

But many years ago, I was caught up in a gun-related attack myself. At the time, the only training I had to draw upon was Judo. Interestingly, that knowledge proved incredibly useful — but the experience stayed with me. It was one of the reasons I later chose to train in how to respond to different types of weapons and threatening situations, and why these are things I now teach.

Until something happens to you, it's very easy to think, That sort of thing won't happen to me. I know, because I didn't expect it to happen to me either.

Self-defence isn't about believing that one clever technique can make a fi***rm safe. It can't. Nor is it about teaching people to be frightened of the world. It's about understanding distance, behaviour, opportunity and your surroundings; recognising when compliance may be the safest option, when you can get away, and what options might exist if you genuinely have no choice but to act.

That's why I often think of training as putting something in your pocket. You learn it. You practise it. You build knowledge and experience. Then hopefully you carry it around for the rest of your life and never, ever need to take it out.

But having been in a situation where I unexpectedly needed to reach into my own very small pocket of knowledge, I know which I would rather have:
Something in my pocket rather than nothing at all.

I'm Laura Doyle, and I teach practical self-defence for real life. You don't need any previous self-defence experience to start — that's what classes are for.

YOU MAY ONLY HAVE A SPLIT SECOND TO DECIDE.

Hi, I'm Laura. This photograph is a training scenario — but the decision behind it is very real. If someone has a blade, you don't get the luxury of standing there calmly working through a list of techniques in your head. In that moment, distance matters.

Awareness matters. Your surroundings matter. Can you get away? Is there an escape route? Is there something between you and the threat? Sometimes the safest decision is to run. Sometimes you may have no choice but to respond.

That's one of the reasons I believe self-defence needs to be practised before you ever need it. We don't train because we want to fight. We train so that awareness, movement and decision-making become more familiar, and so we're better prepared to act when fear and adrenaline leave very little time to think. No self-defence technique can promise a particular outcome against a blade, but training can help you understand distance, recognise options and make decisions under pressure.
I hope you never find yourself in this situation. I genuinely do. But hoping something never happens isn't the same as being prepared. That split second is not the time to wish you'd learned what to do.

I'm Laura Doyle, and I teach practical self-defence for adults, teenagers and children. Complete beginners are welcome, and your first trial session is FREE.

In a world full of princesses, be Batman. 🖤🦇

Being your own hero isn’t about wearing a cape—it’s about knowing how to protect yourself when it matters most.

As a female self-defence instructor, I hear the same myths all the time:
❌ "I'm too small."
❌ "I'm not fit enough."
❌ "I don't have any experience."

Krav Maga self-defence changes all of that. It doesn’t rely on brute strength. It relies on your natural, instinctive reactions, allowing you to effectively defend yourself against a much larger attacker.

At Krav Generation, we provide specialised training tailored for everyone. Whether you are looking to build foundational safety skills together, boost your teenager's confidence, or master realistic tactical defense as an adult, we have a mat for you:
👨‍👩‍👧 Parent & Child Classes (Ages 4+) – Build a bulletproof safety bond and learn to protect each other.
🎒 Teens Classes – Develop laser-sharp situational awareness, discipline, and street safety to safely navigate everyday life.
💪 Adults Classes – Gain unstoppable confidence, physical conditioning, and functional threat-neutralisation skills.
👑 Ditch the rescue fantasy.
💪 Take control of your safety.

Self-defence - Addlestone - Leatherhead - Esher - Cobham

Every woman is told to trust her "survival instincts."
The keys clenched between your knuckles. The fake phone call. Checking over your shoulder at every footstep.

We’ve normalised looking for exits instead of living our lives. But if someone actually grabs you, will those instincts be enough?

Carrying keys between your fingers isn't a strategy—it can actually break your own hand on impact. A fake phone call won't deter a committed attacker.

At Krav Generation, we skip the "feel-good" trends and focus entirely on what actually works under pressure.

With a professional background rooted in Policing & Fraud investigation and real-world corporate risk management, I look at self-defence through a different lens. I teach you how to analyse a threat and end it.

Our Self-Defence classes focus on:

The Predator Timeline: Recognising and breaking down an attacker's approach before a physical confrontation even begins.

Biomechanical Advantage: Simple, devastating strikes that rely on leverage, targeting — not brute upper-body strength.

The Reality Shock: Training your brain and body to overcome the freeze response when adrenaline spikes.

Don't guess your security or rely on lifestyle myths. Train with an instructor who knows the exact difference between a theory and a functional defence.

Classes are fun & accessible to everyone,
regardless of age, ability, physique or level of fitness.

AS A PARENT, ARE YOU PROTECTING YOUR CHILD WHEN THEY LEAVE THE SCHOOL GATES?

We buy them the safest car seats, research the best schools, and track their phones. But what happens when they are walking home alone, hanging out in the local park after hours, or confronted by peer intimidation and street violence?

In today’s world, social media heavily inflates the "fear factor" for teenagers, sometimes leading to dangerous choices.

At Krav Generation, we believe a parent's duty of care extends far beyond the front door. We don't train children to be aggressive fighters; we empower them with the real-world safety skills required to survive and get home safely.

Our specialised youth self-defence classes teach Surrey’s kids and teens how to: Develop laser-sharp situational awareness to spot and avoid street dangers early. De-escalate verbal conflict confidently using body language and negotiation. Respond instinctively under pressure if they are ever physically grabbed or cornered. Build massive self-belief so they never look like an easy target to bullies.

Fulfill your duty of care by giving your child the ultimate life skill. Classes are fun, structured, and open to all fitness levels.

Red vs Blue

Krav Generation’s response to a dangerous viral trend

So what is Red vs Blue?

It’s a thinly veiled ‘game’ designed to incite rivalry and violence between different schools and targeting children as young as 11 years old. More than a scrap or a skirmish, students are challenged to earn points for hurting their opponents. And even worse, there is positive encouragement to carry weapons, including compasses, protractors and scissors – items commonly found in a student’s pencil case – and even knives and fireworks.

There is an aspect to our kids and teens classes that we don’t tend to promote – talking. Alongside working on self-defence skills and techniques, we’ve created a safe and supportive environment in which students can voice their opinions, experiences, worries. This week, students shared their worry about rumours of a Red vs Blue game between their school and another. It was like a snowball effect – everyone in the class, and bear in mind that they come from a number of different schools, said they were also feeling scared.
