W2 were down by at most 12 points at some point but strongly save the game at last‼️

Welcome to Oxford, Coach Spiniello!

CHIARA SPINIELLO, HINTZE FELLOW AT THE UNIVERISTY OF OXFORD'S DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS, HAS BEEN APPOINTED HEAD COACH OF OXFORD'S WOMEN'S TWOS BASKETBALL TEAM

Spiniello, Hintze Fellow at the Department of Physics and Research Fellow at Christ Church, Oxford, is the new Head Coach of Oxford University’s Womens Twos Basketball Team.

"The Oxford University Basketball Club (OUBbC) is truly lucky to have Coach Spiniello heading the women’s Twos and Freshers’ programmes," said Bill De La Rosa, President of the OUBbC. "She brings to the Club decades of experience coaching throughout Europe and a relentless passion for basketball that will benefit all those around her. I’m thrilled to welcome her."

Originally from Naples, Italy, Spiniello has been playing basketball since she was 3 years old, reaching Serie B2, the third highest professional level of Italian basketball.

Spiniello began her coaching career when she was 16 years old, as Assistant Coach for a group of young girls (U13W) and as Head Coach for Polisportiva Pro Cangiani’s mini-basketball team in Naples. When she moved to the Netherlands to start her PhD in Astrophysics, she served as Head Coach of De Groene Uilen’s men’s senior team in Groningen for two years.

Spiniello’s last stop before joining OUBbC was in Munich, Germany, where she was Head Coach of München Basket Club’s U15W, U16W, U18W, and U20W teams for four years, climbing to the DBB Bezirksoberliga. At the same time, she served as Player-Coach for the Club’s W2 team, winning the Kreispokal (Munich’s local cup) and leading her team to a higher league promotion.

Spiniello is an enthusiastic, “noisy,” and unconventional coach who believes that hard work, team atmosphere, and fun are the three crucial ingredients to build a successful basketball team. She looks forwards to an amazing basketball season and having lots of fun on and off the court with the club and her team.

ALEX HALEY NAMED HEAD WOMEN'S BASKETBALL COACH FOR THE OXFORD UNIVERSITY BLUES

Oxford University have announced the appointment of Alex Haley as the Head Basketball Coach of the Women’s Blues. Haley has signed a three-year contract which will see her coach the Blues until the 2023-24 season.

“Coach Haley is the ideal leader to head the University’s top women’s program,” said Bill De La Rosa, President of Oxford University’s Basketball Club. “She has a proven track record of success, sharing our values of excellence, integrity, and respect. I can’t wait to see what she accomplishes.”

Haley comes to Oxford from the Nottingham Wildcats of the WBBL, where she spent the 2020-21 season as an Assistant Coach under Kenrick Liburd. Haley helped lead the Wildcats to the 2021 WBBL Cup Final.

Prior to her arrival in Nottingham, Haley spent the 2019-20 season playing professionally for the Leicester Riders in the WBBL. The Riders won the 2020 WBBL Trophy. That season she also served as Head Coach for the Charnwood Riders Women’s U18 Basketball Team, one of the top basketball academies in the United Kingdom.

“I am honoured to be named Head Coach of the Blues at the University of Oxford. The programme has seen great success in the past and I welcome the challenge of getting the team back to winning ways.”

Haley spent three seasons playing professional basketball in the Women’s British Basketball League following a standout career at NCAA Division II Minot State and Lindenwood University. At Lindenwood, Haley helped lead the team to the programme’s first ever conference tournament semi-final appearance in 2017.

Haley was a three-year letterman and two-time All-Area player at Libertyville High School in Illinois, leading them to their historic three-peat NSC 4A Conference Championship in 2010, 2011, and 2012.

The University of Oxford has a rich tradition in basketball and has long been a destination for American players to extend their collegiate playing careers beyond their NCAA eligibility. The Oxford Women’s Basketball team dominated British University Basketball in the 1990s, winning national championships in 1994, 1998, and 1999.
