Fishing is more than a job.

Before Scottish seafood reaches shore, crews are working in one of the UK’s most dangerous professions, where every task is shaped by the movement of the vessel, the weather, the tides and changing visibility.

It takes skill, quick thinking and expertise to work safely in an environment that never stands still.

That is why safety, training and welfare remain so important across the fishing industry - supporting the people who work at sea. Behind every catch are crews who understand how to manage the conditions and help bring Scottish seafood from sea to plate.

🎣 Scotland values its fishing industry – and our governments should too
A new Action Plan from the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Fisheries is calling for fishing and seafood to be recognised as part of the UK’s critical national infrastructure.
SFF Chief Executive Elspeth Macdonald said: “SFF’s regular polling shows that the Scottish public values our fishing industry, and we need our governments to value it too. This Action Plan could help set us on a course for a successful and sustainable future.”
The report calls for a long-term strategy that recognises fishing’s importance to food security, jobs and coastal communities.

Healthy seas matter to everyone - including the fishing communities that depend on them every day. 🎣

Conversations around marine protection can often become oversimplified, but the future of Scotland’s seas needs more than broad assumptions. It needs evidence, local knowledge and a clear understanding of how fishing communities work with the marine environment.

Those who work at sea bring generations of experience and practical insight into Scotland’s waters. Their voices should be part of decisions about conservation, fisheries management and future marine planning.

A fair approach must recognise where protection is needed, while also supporting sustainable fishing, food production and the coastal communities connected to our seas.
