Ellon Meadows FC v Westdyke CC
Saturday 13th May 2017

The boys welcomed Westdyke CC to The Meadows for the final game of the season and were looking for a win which would have meant a joint 4th finish in the B League.

Numbers were again tight due to illness and injury, with Jack Bell getting a late call to come and help out despite suffering a bad ankle twist a couple of weeks ago.

Ellon started the game brightly and threatened the Westdyke goal on a couple of occasions but couldn't find a way past some solid defending. Westdyke then took a surprise lead when a through ball found the forward in acres of space (a hint of offside??) and he calmly placed the ball wide of Grazzer and into the net.

Ellon responded immediately and forced a succession of corners but the ball just wouldn't go in.

Ellon were dealt a blow midway through the first half when Nairn was sent off, much to the bemusement of players, coaches and spectators of both teams.

The boys were battling away despite being down to 10 men and were unfortunate to concede a second goal shortly before half time when a cross from the left wasn't dealt with and the Westdyke striker prodded the ball home.

Half time 0-2

The second half was an altogether scrappier affair, with the numerous stoppages not helping either team getting in to any kind of rhythm. Westdyke extended their lead before Scott Fraser pulled one back for Ellon with a fine strike from a free kick from just outside the box.

Ellon continued to push forward in the hope of getting back in to the game and had a strong claim for a penalty when Ross Connon was flattened by the Westdyke keeper while going for a cross. However, the referee waved play on, despite the keeper making no contact with the ball and a lot of contact with Ross's head.

The 10 men of Ellon were still working hard. However, in trying to find a way back in to the game, were leaving themselves short at the back at times and Westdyke capitalised on this when a long ball caused uncertainty between Nathaniel and a couple of Ellon defenders, leaving the Wesdyke striker to fire into an empty net.

Shortly after, Westdyke scored a fifth with a shot from the edge of the box.

To the great credit of the Ellon boys, they pulled a goal back in the 90th minute, Scott Fraser getting his second of the day with a sweet, left foot shot from 25 yards that flew in to the top corner.

Full time EMFC 2 - Westdyke 5

A disappointing result today, but the boys can look back on the season with a lot of pride. Recent victories against the top 2 teams (Middlefield and Banchory) give us plenty to be positive about for next season.

Thanks to each and every one of the boys for their effort and commitment this season and also huge thanks to the parents, family and supporters who have encouraged them throughout. Hope to see as many of you as possible at the EMFC Competitive Teams Presentation Night, Sunday 28th May, 4pm at The Station Hotel, Ellon.

Finally, congratulations to Middlefield Wasps on winning the B League this season, richly deserved winners.

Thursday 27th April – ADJFA Under 17s ‘B’ League

Ellon Meadows 6 – 0 Southend

Southend were the visitors to the Meadows tonight for Ellon’s penultimate fixture of the season.

Still plenty to play for. An impressive unbeaten run and 4th place still very much up for grabs which would be a remarkable achievement given the struggle for numbers at the start of the season.

Once again it looked like we would be at full strength but, once again, not to be. Nathaniel not fully recovered from injury and Jack Bell also missing out due to an ankle injury in yesterday’s school match.

Ellon had the breeze behind them in the first half and immediately took the game to their opponents.
It was virtually one way traffic but a combination of a slack final ball and a wee lack of composure in front of goal meant the score line remained blank.

Chance after chance came and went but Ellon just couldn’t find the break through. Cameron Gray a virtual spectator in the Ellon goal.

Aaron MacFarlane then brought a great save from the Southend keeper. Scott Fraser drew another save, Nairn shot past and Ross was pulled up for a borderline offside when clean through.

Half time 0-0. No need to panic, keep doing the same and the through balls would hold up a bit better into the breeze.

Within minutes the breakthrough – Shaun Balgowan won the ball just inside the Ellon half and instantly found Granters who then looked up and played a superb diagonal ball for Ross to race onto and then find the net with an excellent finish.

1-0 and finally the goal Ellon deserved.

Soon after it was 2-0. Aaron MacFarlane picked the ball up on the edge of the penalty area and sent a pile-driver past the Southend keeper. The Meadows soon filled with the words “what did you think of that then”!

Then Aaron MacKenzie got in on the act, a great ball in from the left by Kieran Yeats was expertly dispatched first time by Aaron. A slick finish to match his new hair-do! 3-0.

Ellon were dominant, a shot from Aaron MacKenzie was saved by the keeper, Ross was first to the ball and knocked it back to Ruari who fairly blasted the ball home. 4-0.

Then a through ball from midfield found Nairn who powered his way through before finding the corner of the net with a neat finish. 5-0.

In the dying minutes Ellon were awarded a free kick inside the Southend box for a pass-back to the keeper. The ball was tapped to Scott Fraser who powered the ball home.

6-0 at full time and a thoroughly deserved victory.
The unbeaten run continues, one game to go and Ellon up to 4th.

Well done (again) boys!

Saturday 22nd April – ADJFA Under 17s ‘B’ League

Kemnay 2 – 3 Ellon Meadows

3 games to go – could Ellon continue their excellent run with 4th place still very much up for grabs.

Quite a few boys missing today including both keepers again so Cameron Gray was once again in goal and we were a bit relieved in the end to have 12 players available.

The pitch was a bit bare, dry and bumpy so silky football was going to be a challenge.

Ellon started well however and controlled the game from the start.
Several good moves and chances were created but the opening goal was proving elusive.

Kemnay’s main threat was coming from their keeper’s goal kicks, with breeze behind, but nothing to really trouble the Ellon rear guard.

Then the breakthrough, Jack Bell cut in from the right and crossed for Dylan Kearney who fairly smashed the ball high into the net from around 8 yards to open his Ellon account in style. 0-1.

It was very nearly 2 soon after. A cross field ball from the left was again met by Dylan who showed great confidence to shoot first time and smacked the outside of the post. What a goal that would have been.

Although Ellon could have been out of sight, incredibly it was Kemnay who snatched the next goal.
In a rare foray into the Ellon penalty area, some hesitancy allowed a Kemnay player to dart through and place the ball neatly beyond Cameron Gray. 1-1.

Ellon continued to have the better of play. A cross from the left from Ross found Jack in a great position only for the ball to bounce up at a wicked angle with the goal at his mercy.

Soon after Ellon grabbed the lead they deserved when a fantastic through ball from Kieran Lewis found Aaron MacFarlane, who, despite being held back by a Kemnay defender, managed to poke the ball into the far corner. 1-2.

Into the second half, and a quieter start, although Ellon were still the more dominant team.

Then the games turning point. A ball in from the right bounced off Lewis’ leg onto his arm – penalty. A very harsh decision from an Ellon viewpoint.
The ball soon dispatched. 2-2.

The game then became a bit scrappy but Ellon still dominated.

A through ball in midfield found Jack Bell sprinting through the middle, holding off 2 or 3 challenges…….into the box…….goal surely……..NO…….Jack stroked the ball wide.
Great run though, hope Rangers’ finishing is a bit better than that tomorrow!

Then Ross Connon picked up the ball outside the area, drove forward, jinking his way past 4 Kemnay defenders, glided past another before being upended. Penalty.
Up stepped Aaron MacFarlane to calmly finish past the Kemnay keeper. 2-3.

Ellon then saw the game out to full time without further incident and could / should have stretched their lead.

So 3-2 Ellon at the final whistle and another good 3 points for the boys. Kemnay were a stuffy team, difficult to break down, although Ellon, once again, just kept going and finally got the win they thoroughly deserved with Cameron Gray barely having a save to make.

2 games to go boys. Let’s keep it going.

A good day for all Aberdeen and Ellon Meadows 17s fans……….

Tuesday 18th April – ADJFA Under 17s ‘B’ League

Ellon Meadows 4 – 1 Middlefield Wasps

No respite for the boys – after last week’s endeavours next up was Middlefield.
A tough fixture for sure with Middlefield virtual certainties to become league champions and so far unbeaten this season.

Ellon were looking to extend their own recent good run, beaten only once since February.

Heading into the game it looked like this would be a first for Ellon – a full squad to choose from! Incredibly this changed dramatically when both Gregor and Nathaniel had to call off on match day due to illness and injury. Thankfully Cameron Gray agreed to a very late call and settled in between the sticks for kick –off.

Ellon decided to go with a containing 4-2-3-1 formation in an attempt to stifle Middlefield. We knew Middlefield would be a big test and couldn’t afford to give them space to play.

Granters and Jack were tasked with securing the midfield and giving added protection to the defence.
The defence knew they would be in for a hard night and would have to put in a shift whilst the midfield would have to defend with strength and then support Nairn when we did have the ball.

The tactics worked well for a start with Ellon in control and a couple of decent chances came and went after a great break from defence.

Then the opener, a superb through ball from Aaron MacFarlane was latched onto by Nairn who showed great strength and pace to hold off the challenge and then slot the ball into the net. 1-0.

Middlefield then pressed hard for the equaliser and with the breeze at their backs had the best of the possession although clear cut chances were few with Ellon’s defence, once again, putting in a great effort and Grazer coping admirably in goals.

Middlefield did eventually level when a good cross from a corner was slotted home. 1-1.

Ellon then grabbed the lead again.
A superb corner from Aaron MacFarlane was met by Scott Fraser who nodded the ball firmly into the net.
2-1 and no more than Ellon deserved.

Middlefield were rattled. Was their long unbeaten run in the league about to come to an end?

Ellon then held out comfortably enough to half time with every boy doing their bit and giving their all.

Into the second half……..what a half.

Ellon started brilliantly and gradually took control of the game.
The defence was solid and dealt with everything that came their way.
The midfield were working their socks off, Jack was bulldozing everything in his way and Nairn wasn’t giving the Middlefield defence a moment’s peace. Great to watch.

Ellon continued to have the better of it as a feisty battle developed. Ruari then picked the ball up in midfield, looked up and then played a sublime through ball to Nairn who controlled and then dispatched the ball expertly into the net. 3-1. Superb.

The boys weren’t finished and continued to pour forward. Another through ball, from Kieran? this time, found Nairn who, despite Middlefield protests for offside, ran on and dispatched the ball into the net off the inside of the post for a well-earned hat-trick. 4-1.

Almost immediately Nairn was through again but this time caught the outside of the post.

Middlefield then threatened at the other end but Grazer pulled off a great save from a free kick.

Ellon then closed the game out to full time without further incident.

A superb all round performance from the boys tonight and a well-deserved 3 points which was well appreciated by everyone on the Ellon touchline.

A great team effort and just great to watch.
Well done boys!

All the best to champions elect Middlefield in their remaining games. An impressive season from them.

Thursday 13th April – ADJFA Under 17s ‘B’ League

Ellon Meadows 6 – 4 Formartine Utd

Quick return to the Meadows tonight with Formartine the opposition and Ellon hoping to continue their recent good run.

If Tuesday’s match was a great game for the neutrals words are difficult to come by to describe this one!

The match started a wee bit flat. Ellon were certainly the more dangerous team but the final ball was often a loose one.

Several good chances were created but a combination of good goalkeeping and lack of a killer touch meant the game remained scoreless.

The goal just wouldn’t come. Nairn was through a couple of times but his efforts bounced just wide of the post and then one cannoned off the keeper and went narrowly past.

Formartine were creating chances of their own with some neat build up play. Callum McWilliam wasn’t quite able to find a finish after a nice mazy run from midfield.

Then, after some loose play at the back Formartine were ahead. 0-1.

Ellon pushed for the equaliser but it just wouldn’t come. Then, not long before half time Formartine won a free kick around 25 yards out.
One of their midfielders stepped up and sent a beauty into the top corner. Nothing anybody can do about that. Great finish. 0-2.

Half time and the boys were a bit frustrated but still plenty time to get something from the game.

Ellon again kicked off on the front foot. After a period of continued pressure Aaron MacFarlane swung in a great corner and there was Captain for the night Shaun Balgowan to power a header home.
Finally the goal the boys deserved, now to crack on
Not to be – despite having by far the better of possession it was Formartine who broke and grabbed a third goal. 1-3.

The game then just got crazy……

2 mins later – an “inspired substitution” saw Aaron MacKenzie introduced onto the right wing. With his first touch Aaron controlled the ball wide on the right and then, with his second, sent a looping shot high over the keeper before dipping just under the crossbar and into the net. For a split second time stood still – everyone seemed to think “is that in” – even Aaron appeared shocked - but in it was.
2-3. Now to crack on……

Not so, 2 minutes later and a cross ball was knocked into the Ellon net and it was Formartine’s turn to celebrate. 2-4.

It was all or nothing now for Ellon. An inspired tactical change (thank you Scott) saw Ellon go 3 at the back. It was supposed to be 3-5-2 but actually ended up being more like 3-0-7. Ach well, it was worth a bash.

3 minutes later it was 3-4 when Nairn bulldozed his way through and blasted the ball into the net from close range.
Now to crack on……surely??!!

Incredibly we had to wait 4 minutes for the next goal. The ball was played into the Formartine box and was nodded on by Shaun, Ross got to the ball first but was fouled – penalty!

After what felt like an eternity up stepped Aaron Macfarlane to calmly slot the ball home. 4-4.
The Ellon boys went crazy and so did the touchline (apologies for jumping on your back Dave, it was just that kind of night)!

1 minute later and it was 5-4 when Nairn outpaced the defence and found the net.

3 minutes later and up popped Aaron MacFarlane to stroke the ball in after a fine flowing move from Ellon. 6-4.

The final whistle sounded soon after and I’m not sure anyone could quite believe what went on in the second half.

Great credit to the boys for finding the extra gear and never giving up.

In the end a very well deserved 3 points – but what a way to go about it!

Tuesday 11th April – ADJFA Under 17s ‘B’ League

Ellon Meadows 2 – 2 Turriff Utd

Tonight saw the return match with Turriff Utd at The Meadows.
Numbers were tight but the message following Saturday’s game was simple – same again!

Ellon kicked off into the cross pitch breeze but made a decent start. Chances were being created at both ends with Turriff’s pace in attack often testing the Ellon rear-guard who, once again, stood firm to a man.

It was Ellon who snatched the lead however. A great through ball from Ruari (or Aaron MacF!) saw Nairn show great perseverance to first win the ball and then bear down on goal before finding the corner of the net with a delightful finish.

It was now a hard fought game with both sides giving their all. Ellon’s defence held out until a nice move from Turriff saw the ball land around 20 yards from goal and the ball was swiftly dispatched into the top corner giving Gregor no chance.

1-1 it stayed through to half time despite plenty of effort from both sides.

The second half started in similar vein to the first. Ellon nearly snatched the lead when Nairn outpaced the Turriff defence but saw his chip go just wide.

Nairn wasn’t to be denied however. A ‘clever’ pass out from Gregor found Aaron MacKenzie who swiftly played the ball through to Nairn who, once again, showed great pace and strength before dispatching the ball into the Turriff net. 2-1.

The rest of the game predominantly belonged to Turriff. Ellon began to tire with their efforts starting to show.

The boys continued to battle hard and the defence were under intense pressure, putting in a superb effort. Could they hold out?

Sadly not to be. With just over 5 minutes remaining Turriff broke swiftly from defence and their centre back swung in a dangerous cross which was dispatched into the net. 2-2.

The game ended without further incident and it was a disappointed changing room after the game.

No need to be disappointed though, this was without question a point gained against a very good Turriff team.
It must have been a great game to watch as a neutral, both teams giving their all on what was a tricky night for silky football.

Thanks to the support team tonight of Colin Grant (Snr) and Roddy MacFarlane, much appreciated.

Colin Grant (jnr) last seen relaxing on his holidays.....with yet another beer………

Saturday 8th April - ADJFA Under 17s B League

Ellon Meadows vs Banchory Boys Eagles

Back to Gordon Park this weekend for Ellon as they welcomed a Banchory side who had only lost one league game all season.

If last weeks performance was excellent, Ellon proved they could turn it up another level yesterday.

Similarly to last week Ellon conceded an early goal, failing to defend a dangerous throw in from the right hand side which was duly headed past Nathaniel in goal.

There were no more goals in the opening 45 minutes as the game became a midfield battle, but Aaron Macfarlane did find enough space to execute an audacious "rabona" pass to Kieran Yeats, whilst 1-0 down nonetheless.

Midway through the first half Scott Fraser clashed heads with the Banchory forward and was forced to leave the pitch momentarily. Scott did recover and return to the Ellon defence which conceded few clear-cut chances during the first half.

Half Time: Ellon 0-1 Banchory

With the wind in their favour Ellon started the second half on the front foot. A quick-fire double shocked Banchory as Ellon quickly found themselves in front.

Firstly, a defence-splitting cross from the right wing from Aaron Macfarlane found Nairn at the back post, who did well to bundle the ball over the line to equalise.

Then a 50 yard free kick from Scott Fraser was too much for the Banchory goalkeeper, turning the game swiftly on its head.

Despite having the lead, Ellon continued to press for more goals. Aaron Macfarlane's delivery from corners (with both feet) proved effective again yesterday as an in-swinger from the left was prodded over the line. There was an initial debate whether it was Scott or Shaun who got the goal but I am informed that Scott did grab his second of the game.

As the game got into the latter stages Ellon were forced to defend as Banchory threw more men forward. From back to front Ellon's work rate and organisation was superb, an excellent defensive display.

The one time Banchory did get through however, Gregor made a finger tip save from a header that looked destined for the top corner. Save of the season contender.

Banchory were awarded a penalty with less than ten minutes to go as Shaun collided with their striker inside the box. Looked like a harsh decision. The penalty was tucked away and it looked like it was going to be a long final few minutes.

But it didn't turn out like that. Banchory's attacking formation left them open at the back and after a surging run down the right, Nairn cut the ball back for Aaron Macfarlane to tuck home and regain Ellon's two goal cushion.

Ellon held on and defended bravely for the last few minutes and were delighted to hear the final whistle.

A well deserved three points for Ellon strengthened our position in fifth place ahead of our games on Tuesday and Thursday against Turriff and Formartine at the Meadows.

Full Time: Ellon Meadows 4-2 Banchory Boys Eagles

Saturday 1st April – ADJFA Under 17s ‘B’ League

Ellon Meadows 8 – 1 Colony Colts

Late change of venue today and it was great to get the opportunity to play on the wide open spaces of the Meadows again.

In league terms this was a big game with Colony the team directly below Ellon, a win would put a bit of breathing space between the teams.

To the match – what to say - what a performance.

Incredibly Ellon found themselves 1-0 down with only a few minutes on the clock after some slack play allowed the Colony player to find the net.

The early setback unsettled the boys a wee bit and although having the better of possession the passing was often a bit anxious and rushed.

This didn’t last too long however as Aaron MacKenzie out-paced the Colony defence and found the corner of the net with a neat finish.

Ellon then assumed full control of the match.
Defensively solid it was one-way traffic and Ellon’s formation looked more like 4-2-4 than 4-4-2.

The all-important second goal came not long after when Nairn also found the corner of the net with a composed finish.
2-1 and no more than Ellon deserved.

The sticky start was well and truly behind them now and the boys were putting together some excellent moves with some great passing play from back to front.

It was chance after chance and Ellon were unlucky on several occasions not to increase their lead.

Aaron MacKenzie hit the woodwork and the Colony keeper was making some good saves but couldn’t deny Ellon a third.

A wonderful cross from Scott Fraser was controlled by Nairn and then touched on by Aaron MacKenzie to Shaun Balgowan whose finish was almost as slick as his new haircut!

Then, after delivering several probing corners, Aaron Macfarlane found the net with a neat finish before Scott Fraser headed home to make it 5 just before half time.

To their credit the boys continued in similar vein in the second half and Gregor was a virtual spectator throughout.

Kieran Lewis bundled the ball home to make it 6 before Jack Bell got in on the act to make it 7.

Aaron MacKenzie then hit the woodwork again before stroking the ball home for Ellon’s 8th.

Several other chances came and went but the boys kept the tempo going right to the end of the game which was great to see.

So a great team performance where everyone did their bit and gave their all.

Shaun could well have matched Considine’s hat-trick after narrowly directing a header over the bar and then not quite managing a finish later in the match.

Kieran Yeats did everything but score and Nairn is claiming an assist for atleast 6 of the 8 goals, however my memory certainly isn’t good enough to recall that much detail……..

A Dons and Meadows 17s double………….15 for and 1 against…………… .if Carlsberg did weekends…….

If only every Saturday could be like this.

25/03/2017

Saturday 25th March – ADJFA Under 17s ‘B’ League

Turriff Utd 6 – 1 Ellon Meadows

A trip to Banff today to play Turriff. No concerns with the weather, a beautiful sunny day for a change.

We were tight for numbers again so were delighted to see Scott Fraser back in Ellon colours and Kieran Lewis also agreed to help out.

The match was played on the new 3G pitch at Banff, a great facility – oh to play on a surface like that every week, albeit it took a wee bit of getting used to.

Ellon started the match well and were on top in the opening stages.
After a good passage of play Aaron Macfarlane bore down on goal but the Turriff keeper was quickly off his line to prevent the opening goal.

Ellon continued to force the play but couldn’t find the break through. Turriff worked their way into the game and always looked threatening going forward.

The Ellon defence were putting in a power of work but, with 25 minutes played, Turriff snatched the lead after a quick breakaway from their own half.

Ellon were a bit stunned. They’d put so much into the game and now found themselves behind.
Worse was to follow, a quick one-two from Turriff and all of a sudden it was 3-0.

Ellon rallied and a great through ball found Ross Connon sprinting into the box only to be blatantly pushed off the ball for a needless penalty.

In a flash Aaron MacFarlane was standing over the penalty spot…….and dispatched the ball into the back of the net. 3-1.

Different game now, the next goal was going to be crucial.
Turriff thought they had it soon after when their striker’s shot from just outside the box looked like it was heading for the top corner until Nathaniel somehow managed to get a hand to it and tip it round the post. Great save.

Then, right on the stroke of half time Ellon had another chance but Aaron MacFarlane just couldn’t quite find the finish.

The big pitch and warm weather meant it was a tough half but nobody could be faulted for effort.

Into the second half and again Ellon started well.

The formation was very attack minded. We knew we needed the next goal. Turriff always looked threatening on the break but did look a bit vulnerable at the back and Ellon had pace.
Ellon’s defence were working their socks off. It was almost a 4-0-6 at times!

There were chances at both ends but with 15 minutes to go Turriff snatched the all-important fifth goal after another good break from defence. 4-1.

Within minutes the Turriff touchline were celebrating again – however, prematurely this time.

A shot from around 8 yards out was surely heading into the corner of the net but Gregor pulled off a superb save, somehow clawing the ball away. Great stuff.

Turriff were on top now, Ellon’s legs were heavy and Turriff snatched another couple of goals towards the end. 6-1 Full time.

The scoreline was very harsh on Ellon, it certainly wasn’t a 6-1 game. Turriff were just clinical in their finishing whereas Ellon perhaps lacked a wee bit of luck at times with the final through ball and found the ball just held a little on the surface compared to what they’re used to.

The ref, who it has to be said, had a good game also commented on the efforts of the boys which is always good to hear.

Well played to Turriff though, a good strong team and here’s hoping for another good, open game when they visit Ellon in the next few weeks.
