It was Scottish Cup first round action today as the boys travelled to Lawsondale to take on fellow A League team Westdyke CC 2013’s.

We welcomed back Ben, Peter and Riley who have been out injured since early preseason with illness and injuries, however it wasn’t all good news as left back Louie was still out and keeper Zak joined the long term injury list following our last game. We wish them both a speedy recovery.

As for the game itself the first half was played at a good pace with BODA trying to break down a resolute Westdyke defence who themselves were posing a real threat on the break.

From one of these breaks the referee awarded a penalty when the ball was run out of play which was expertly dispatched to give the hosts the lead.

The boys didn’t dwell though and finished the half strongly creating a number of chances but just couldn’t find the finishing touch.

HT 1-0

BODA started the second half strongly and drew level when Joe outpaced the defence on to Peters threaded through ball and slotted it below the keeper.

1-1

With BODA now throwing everything at their hosts they thought had a penalty of their own when the whistle was blown after Joe was thrown to the ground when a freekick was played in. However after a bit of confusion the defender was only spoken to and play was waved on.

The boys were quickly left scratching their heads again when Peter was sent through on goal and was brought down in the D by the single chasing defender. The whistle was immediately blown for a free kick, however only a yellow card was shown.

The boys showed unbelievable maturity to keep pushing despite all this, however when it’s not your day it not your day and as one final corner was headed narrowly over the bar the whistle blew and the game finished 1-1.

It was then on to the lottery of a penalty shoot out with Westdyke coming out on top and yet another really tough to take defeat.

Well done to the Westdyke boys though who played brilliantly in what was a really high quality game of football and we wish them all the best in the next round.

Coaches player of the match this week was Joe who the coaches said was a constant threat up top hassling defenders and creating chances. Joe is sponsored by Scott Anderson Performance Training.

Supporters player was shared between the effervescent Peter who it was great to see back twisting and turning down wings and big centre back William who was his usual solid self at the heart of the defence whilst also starting a number of attacks. William is sponsored by M Squared Accountants

Special mention also has to go to the players from both teams who bravely stepped forward to take a penalty. Never an easy thing to do and hats off to every one of them.

It was the first competitive action of the season for the BODA boys today as Dyce Boys Club 2013 visited Spain Park in an ADJFA league encounter.

Unfortunately with injuries etc the team only had 10 fit players but were bolstered by left back Louie who bravely stepped off the treatment table to make up the 11.

Anyone who has played Dyce will know the threat they have from through balls and Dyce quickly took the lead with a smart run and finish from a ball over the top.

The game was pretty even for the next 20 minutes before another couple of well finished through ball goals from the Dyce striker saw the boys go 3-0 behind.

To compound the matter Carter then had to go off after a heavy knock, however 10 player BODA managed hold out to the break.

HT 3-0 Dyce

During the break Louie had to bow out after a knock and the 10 players quickly became 9 despite a brave attempt by Carter to come back on.

After a quick restructure, what followed was a gargantuan effort from the 9 remaining players, with Zak and his make shift defence of Kuba, Joe, William and Noah backed up by Midfielders Jake, Luca and Mason throwing everything in the way of the Dyce attacks, while still managing to pose a threat through Tyler who was leading the attack.

The BODA resolve was eventually broken when Dyce were awarded a penalty to make it 4-0 and quickly added to it with a long range shot which looped over Zak.

With 15 minutes to go 5-0 down and with 9 players it looked like a really heavy defeat might have been on the cards, however it was BODA who got the next goal when a Jake freekick was headed home by William.

5-1 Dyce

A few minutes later BODA scored again, this time a brilliant run out of defence by Noah ended with a low cross which after a bit of a scramble was hit home by Mason.

5-2 Dyce

The BODA boys tails were now up and reduced the deficit to 2 when after another attack was foiled by foul at the edge of the box and Masons freekick found the back of the net.

5-3 Dyce

The 9 Players continued to push but time was now against them and the final whistle put an end to a breathless second half and what would have been the unlikeliest of comebacks.

From a Player of the Match point of view special mention from the coaches went to stand in centre back Joe and stand in left back Noah who both looked like they had always played there, however today the Player of the match quite simply has to go to the whole team.

Make no mistake Dyce 2013’s are a top level side and for the boys to play the second half how they did with 2 less players and a number of boys playing out of position is a credit to the character of every single one of them. As the saying goes there are ways to lose games of football.

Thanks to Dyce for the game and we wish them all the best for the rest of the season.
