The Wider Team
Thinking about the wider team is critical in creating a one-team approach.
In this clip, Mark talks about the recognition of the wider team and the impact this has.
Think about the wider team, not just those directly involved. All personnel can be under pressure, e.g.: maintenance, catering, service providers, geologists in town. These people may not have the training and experience for situational leadership. They may look to you for ideas and support. Conversely, they may have critical insights that you don’t have. Share the work with the appropriate people – who is best place to execute the task? What levels of support do you need to give – sometimes it may just be encouragement.
• Listen to questions and issues they raise about the current situation – they may have crucial information.
• Share the load – but give the correct level of support – think of directive versus supportive behaviour.
• Support goes beyond work – consider personal well-being.

Debriefing together to learn from experiences is critical in continually stepping up to a new level of performance.
Mark Stewart talks about the importance of thorough debriefs after training and competition.
At the end of a shift (or task if possible) have a short debrief as a team and share thoughts and learnings, especially the non-technical learnings. Ask how we ensure those lessons are applied into the next job. Don’t just focus on the negative – what went well and why did that event go well? How do you ensure you repeat great performance?
• Role model – be open and honest what you could have done better and encourage others.
• You need to update documentation to ensure these learnings are applied going forward.
• Consider how you will share your lessons – don’t just archive lessons away.

Performance limiting factors.
In this video, Mark Stewart talks about recognising performance limiting factors and how this is managed. Look for the stresses that affect performance, such as fatigue, distractions and hunger. Coach the team to recognise colleagues whose performance is being adversely affected. Fatigue, in particular, can have a big impact. Long laborious tasks will be mentally draining. The person with dropping performance generally doesn’t recognise their deficiency – you need to identify limiting factors on their behalf.
• Remind each other to take a break – we may not recognise this ourselves.
• Regularly check in for fatigue and how you can mitigate the risks.
• Do not depend on the team telling you they are fatigued.

Encouraging everyone to speak up is an essential characteristic of any successful team.
Mark shares with us the importance of ensuring everyone in the team share their thoughts and are engaged. We may not all see or understand things in the same way – so ask the team to clarify their understanding of your communication.
· Give permission explicitly for all staff to raise concerns.
· Encourage your team to think out loud.
· Welcome challenge and new ideas.

Ensuring procedures & checklists are used to support tasks is essential for any successful team.
Now Mark Stewart shares with us the importance following procedures and checklists. Test the team by seeking threats that could be introduced if we don’t follow the procedures. Challenge the team on how they conducted the relevant checks. You should adopt a common language for use in critical steps. During critical operations put in controls to avoid distractions.
· If interrupted during the checks, stop and consider if starting from the beginning is safer.
· Insist on creating a sterile cockpit atmosphere.

In this video with Mark Stewart, we look at ‘Threat & Error Management’.
Mark is a road and track cyclist who has represented Great Britain and Scotland. He’s a gold medallist from the 2018 Commonwealth Games and twice European champion.

Actively managing Threats & Errors is an essential element of any successful team.
In this clip, Mark Stewart shares with us how he and his team manage threats and errors.
We risk assess...but have you actually operationalised your mitigations? Your mitigations need to consider the unique characteristics of each specific work site and an ever-changing environment. Consider any new threats and errors that could occur during the operation – think about future states.
· Supervisors; stand back far enough to assess the performance of the team.
· Encourage the team to speak up as they see any changes or threats.
· Have a process to measure your team’s understanding of the mitigations.

In the third of our series Mark looks at ‘Successful Leadership’.
Mark Stewart has represented Scotland and Great Britain in road and track cycling. He’s a Commonwealth Games gold medal winner and twice European champion.

Leading by being open & inclusive is an essential element of any successful leader.
This time, Mark Stewart shares with us the importance of good leadership. Good leaders start with actively listening. You can then reflect what you think you are hearing. As a leader people are watching and emulating your behaviours. Think of the expression that, “Calm (and any other behaviour) is contagious,” so be conscious of what image or behaviour you project. Seize the opportunity to publicly praise positive behaviours.
Ask questions first and lead second.
Demonstrate empathy before acting – ask, “What do we think is happening?”
What do we need to do? Focus on what’s right, not who’s right.

In this video from Mark, we’ll look at ‘Decision Making’.
Mark Stewart is a road and track cyclist who has represented Scotland and Great Britain. He’s a twice European champion and a gold medal winner from the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Being methodical & deliberate when making decisions is an essential element of any successful team.
Mark Stewart is sharing with us the importance good decision making. Anxiety and stress can drive you into action in even in the simplest of situations. There’s a technique you can use before trying to think about what to do to ensure your decisions are robust. You need a quick and easy process which is methodical and deliberate when making decisions. We have a model which prevents you by-passing diagnosis and jumping straight to a solution.
Don’t rush to act – control your Inner Chimp.
Use a defined process (model).
If possible – repeat the process before executing the action.

Mark is a road and track cyclist who has represented Great Britain and Scotland. He’s a gold medallist from the 2018 Commonwealth Games and twice European champion.

Keeping your team briefed is an essential element of any successful team.

Here, Mark shares with us the importance of a thorough briefing. You are testing the team’s mental model of what needs to be done. The team’s feedback will, conversely, be a test of how well you transmitted the message.
· Ensure clarity of roles: Who, how & what if?
· Agree clear language and protocols.
· Agree a way to share concerns.
