Exciting Update from the Abercynon War Memorial Pool Committee

We’re pleased to announce that the committee has recently welcomed several new members, bringing with them a wide range of skills and experience to help drive the project forward.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve held our first committee meetings and have also met with Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council to discuss the future of the Abercynon War Memorial Pool.

We know how much this facility means to so many people in our community. Unfortunately, the condition of the pool and its infrastructure meant the facility had to close several years ago. Since then, it has continued to deteriorate and now requires significant investment and extensive work before it can be brought back into use. This won’t be a quick fix, but we’re committed to exploring every opportunity to bring this much-loved community asset back into use.

The committee is currently exploring the most sustainable long-term solution for the site, including the potential to transform it into a modern, accessible splash pad that would provide a safe, inclusive facility for future generations while respecting the history of the War Memorial Pool.

Our immediate priorities are to:

* Strengthen the charity with new trustees and volunteers.
* Work with the Council on the legal arrangements needed to move the project forward.
* Explore design options and obtain specialist advice.
* Develop a funding strategy to secure the investment needed.

This is the beginning of what we know will be a long journey, but we now have a dedicated team with the enthusiasm and experience to lead the project.

We’ll keep the community updated as plans progress, and we’d like to thank everyone for their continued support and encouragement.

If you’d like to support the project, whether through volunteering, fundraising or sharing ideas, we’d love to hear from you. Together, we can help shape the future of this much-loved community asset.

Finally we have enough news for an update:
Firstly, the bad news, the pool will not be open this summer and currently we have no solid expectations as to when it can reopen.
However, there is hope, here is an update on where we are and where we are going.

Where we are:
The current state of the pool is
- The pipe work under the pool itself is still the original iron pipe work from when the pool was originally constructed, we believe that this has collapsed in places leading to poor flow from the plant room and therefore dangerously poor water quality.
- The concrete at the base of the pool has lost it’s structural integrity which means essentially that we can’t seal it and parts of the base of the pool flake off during use, again this has become a safety issue and we have been advised by the council that die to this, we can’t open the pool.

In order to reopen the pool we need a business plan accepted by the council and then we would need to apply for funding from one of the many funding bodies who support community projects like this. One of our biggest blockers has been demonstrating in that plan that we can have a sufficiently committed group of trained volunteers to open the pool over the proposed opening period.

Our next steps:
We have added some experienced members to the committee and after some initial consultation with key parties in the council are hopeful we have a workable proposal to move forward with.
We are awaiting a checklist of next steps from the council and intend to take our plan forward for approval by the council and then onto the funding bodies.
If we get out business plan approved by the council, we will give a more detailed update to the community, restart fundraising activities and be in a position to at least estimate a date for pool reopening.

Thank you all for you patience and support so far!
