The Art of Listening: Hearing Beyond Words

True listening is becoming a rare gift in our noisy world. Most of us are so busy formulating responses that we miss what's actually being said – and more importantly, what's being felt.

Deep listening goes beyond hearing words. It's attending to tone, emotion, and the stories beneath the stories. It's noticing what someone struggles to express and creating space for their full truth to emerge.

The philosopher Simone Weil wrote: "Attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity." When we truly listen, we offer another person perhaps the most precious gift possible: feeling heard and understood.

Good listening requires letting go of the urge to fix, advise, or judge. Sometimes people don't need solutions – they just need to be heard. They need someone to simply receive their experience without trying to change it.

Listening also means hearing the silences. What is not being said? What emotions are hidden beneath surface words? Often, the most important communication happens in the pauses between sentences.

When we listen deeply, something transforms in both speaker and listener. The person speaking often discovers new insights about their own experience. The listener develops empathy and wisdom.

In a world hungry for connection, your capacity to truly listen might be one of the most healing gifts you can offer.

Unhappy New Year?

Christmas and New Year are a joyous, happy time for families, or so the adverts would have us believe. Everywhere we look there are images of happy, smiling people usually surrounded by happy, smiling children.

But what if the reality is very different for you? What if you're smiling on the outside but feeling numb, or even crying, on the inside? More relationships end, and more families break up, over the Christmas holiday period than at any other time of the year.

If you're feeling lonely and empty, or trapped and desperate to escape, now is the perfect time to take back control of your life. I can help you uncover what it is you really want and help you make 2024 the year you rediscover happiness, direction and purpose in your life.

If you’d like to know more just send an email to me at [email protected] or phone me on 01923 449664 to book a free, no-obligations exploratory meeting.

Using the power of visualisation to get what you want.

During the key hours and minutes leading up to a competition, top athletes don’t allow themselves to think about possible mistakes or poor performance. They know that dwelling on potential mistakes actually increases the risk of unconsciously manifesting those very mistakes during the event. Instead, top athletes train to visualise only success. They know from research and personal experience that focusing solely on positive images, picturing themselves achieving their desired outcome and winning, always enhances their chance of success. This is the very essence of visualisation - focusing solely on what you want to happen, not on what you don’t. And the wonderful thing is that anyone can apply this same powerful principle in their daily life to help them achieve their goals and dreams.

How to stay positive during the grey days of November...

Coming after the unusually warm and sunny days of late summer, autumn this year seems particularly cold, damp and bleak. The whole world seems to be in turmoil and we can’t even turn up the central heating or huddle in front of a cheerful, warm fire without worrying about the fuel bills or air pollution. All in all it can seem pretty difficult to stay happy and on top of things.

Lots of Self Help books will tell you that ‘you need to stay positive’ or that ‘a positive attitude is critical to success’ but this isn’t very helpful if you don’t feel positive and your immediate situation is marked by real loss or a lack of much needed resources. Trying to always stay upbeat and happy in the face of undeniably unfortunate circumstances can make you feel a bit of a fraud.

Fortunately there is a secret to becoming both as genuine and as positive as possible in spite of everything you may be facing. A secret to the way in which you can be true to yourself and at the same time reap the rewards of what people call a positive attitude.

And that secret is to develop the habit of moving from ‘problem’ to ‘solution’ as quickly as possible because true positivity is not so much a matter of outer behaviour but of inner focus.

This might sound overly simplistic. But if you think about it, so-called ‘negative’ people are individuals whose focus remains solely on their problems without ever moving to solution. They complain about their situation and proclaim that things will never get better but they never shift their attention to how they can resolve their problems to make things better.

Sometimes, of course, the solutions to our problems are not immediately obvious. That’s why, in order to apply this approach to positive thinking, you first need to be committed to the belief that wherever a problem can be identified a solution can be found. The secret is to choose motion over emotion. Give yourself the time you need to process and define your problem but deny yourself the self-destructive luxury of wallowing in it. Instead, maintain a focus on the outcome you really want and keep moving towards it.

No-one can be happy all the time, especially when life gets rough or sad things happen and, indeed, it isn’t even healthy to try. But we can always decide to move from problem to solution as quickly as possible. Having that habit will not only ensure we experience the maximum amount of joy in our lives, but also that we set a truly positive example for others to follow.

Want someone to change? Then focus on the behaviour, not the person!

How often have you said or done something without thinking only to have the other person angrily shout back at you something like “You’re so stupid!” or “You idiot, why did you do that?”, or even “I hate you!”? And did that make you feel angry, defensive even resentful? Rest assured you’re not the only one!

The reason you reacted the way you did is because the other person criticised you rather than what you said or did. They probably don’t really hate you but they most certainly hate what you said or did!

Now turn things around and think about how many times you’ve been the one shouting “You’re so stupid”. You didn’t get the result you wanted, did you? I bet the other person just started shouting back and defending him or herself.

And it’s as true at work as it is at home; if you want someone to change what they do, focus on the behaviour and not the person. When you say “That wasn’t very nice” or “That remark really hurt me” you’re helping the person understand the effect their words or actions are having. If you insult or criticise them saying “You’re so horrible” or “You never think about anyone else” they just become defensive and even emotional and then no longer hear what you are trying to say to them.

So, if you want someone to change the way they are behaving towards you or anyone else, focus on the behaviour. Make it clear that it’s the words or the behaviour that’s ‘wrong’, not the person. After all, it’s much easier for someone to change what they say and do than change who they are. 🙂

How to find and maintain motivation

Finding motivation can be challenging at times, but there are many techniques you can try to help you get motivated. Here are a few suggestions:

• Set clear goals. Having clear goals in mind can help you stay motivated by giving you something specific to work towards. Make sure your goals are SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

• Break tasks down into smaller steps. Sometimes tasks can feel overwhelming, making it difficult to find the motivation to get started. Breaking tasks down into smaller, more manageable steps can make them feel less daunting and easier to tackle.

• Find your "why”. Understanding the reason why you want to accomplish something can help you find the motivation to do it. Consider what motivates you personally, for example financial gain, personal growth, personal relationships or the satisfaction of completing a challenging task.

• Create a plan. Once you have clear goals, and smaller steps to help you accomplish them, create a plan or a schedule. This can help you stay organised and focused on what you need to do.

• Surround yourself with positive influences. Surround yourself with people who are positive, supportive, and motivated themselves. This can help you stay motivated and focused on your goals.

• Celebrate your successes. Celebrating your successes, even small ones, can help you stay motivated by reminding yourself of your progress and accomplishments.

Remember, motivation can fluctuate and it's normal to have ups and downs. It’s not possible to be permanently motivated so be kind to yourself and take breaks when you need them, but always get back on track as soon as you’re ready.

Five Practical Benefits of Working with a Life Coach...

Over the years I’ve often been asked “What are the practical benefits of life coaching?” As I believe life coaching should always produce practical real-world results these are five key areas where practical life coaching can help in all areas of your life.

1 Achieving your goals faster and more effectively:
A practical life coach will help you identify your goals, and work with you to develop a clear action plan to achieve them. Whether you want to achieve a long-held ambition, become more organised and productive or launch your own business they’ll help you stay motivated and accountable and give you the tools and resources you need to succeed.

2 Improving your self-confidence:
A practical life coach will help you identify and overcome limiting self-beliefs that are holding you back from reaching your full potential. By developing a positive mindset, and a stronger sense of self, you’ll be able to tackle challenges with greater confidence and resilience.

3 Managing stress and anxiety:
A practical life coach will provide you with strategies and techniques to better manage stress and anxiety in your daily life. By teaching you how to stay calm and focused under pressure, you’ll be able to take back control of your life and improve your overall well-being.

4 Enhancing your relationships:
A practical life coach will help you improve your communication and leadership skills, as well as guide you in creating healthier and more meaningful relationships with others. This can include your personal relationships as well as your professional relationships with colleagues and clients.

5 Encouraging, guiding and supporting you all the way:
A practical life coach will provide you with an objective perspective, constructive feedback and unconditional support, as well as hold you accountable to your commitments, celebrate your progress with you and help you stay motivated and focused.

In summary, working with a practical life coach will help you improve your overall quality of life by guiding you towards greater self-awareness, personal growth and fulfilment in all areas of your life. Life is full of ups and downs for everyone. Sometimes it feels that disappointments happen far too often, outnumbering the good times. But the way we react to the bad times is very important and can have a major impact on our overall happiness. Dwelling on disappointments can lead to a downward spiral of negative thinking, negative behaviour and further negative consequences.

Allow yourself to feel your disappointment but take the time to look at it objectively as well. Were the causes of the disappointment outside your control or did it happen because of something you did or didn’t do? If it was beyond your control, acknowledge your feelings then choose to let them go, safe in the knowledge there was nothing you could have done to alter the outcome. If your actions influenced the disappointment, acknowledge your feelings and then focus your energy on deciding how you can do things differently in the future to bring about a positive outcome next time. This way you can take back control over your life and start to build yourself a happier future.

We all have occasions where we explode with anger and irritation at something that someone does that hurts or upsets us. Most of us use language that attempts to convey the level of pain or annoyance this has caused us but inevitably this leads to an escalation with insults and accusations traded on both sides.

Next time you find yourself in this situation try to pause before you speak and instead of blurting out personal criticisms and accusations try instead to articulate the effect that the other person’s behaviour has had on you. So, when your partner announces they are going out and leaving all the washing up for you to do, instead of saying “You’re so selfish, you never think of anyone but yourself” say “When you just go out and leave me to clear up it makes me feel really used and unappreciated, especially when I cooked dinner tonight”.

Giving the other person an insight into your emotional response stands a better chance of resolving the situation calmly - after all, it’s difficult to argue the case against a justified emotional reaction to unjustifiable behaviour!

Try this next time you're stuck and just can't started...
If you are stuck with a task you just can't start or a project that's been looming over you for ages here's one easy way to break the deadlock and get going.
First, just quickly write down six things you could do to move yourself forward just one step.
Next, choose just one of those things. Choose the one that will move you forward just a little, or choose the easiest or the quickest, or the one you feel most comfortable doing - but choose one.
Now set the date by when you want to have done this one thing you've chosen, then list any actions you have to complete to achieve it and plan the first step immediately.
Finally, take action! Simply do that first step you've chosen and you'll be unstuck and on your way again.
