Day 2 of Le Pilgrimage took the riders down to the best bakery in Briançon and from there up to maybe the best checkpoint of the event: Fort janus at 2566 metres.

Besides the amazing views into the 4 surrounding valleys the fort is an impressive feat of engineering built between 1883 and 1931. These day the abandoned rooms remember of conflicts of the past and welcomes the riders to get their second stamp in their brevet card.

After two days in France with sun, the next two days the riders will head into the Piemonte region and might face some challenging weather conditions.

Opinel, a trusted tool for our pilgrims since the very first edition. Along the trail, around the fondue table, to open a bottle of w**e, and inside the occasional hidden cabin where cheese and sausage are waiting.

Merci, nos amis !

And we’re off! Stage 1 of this years Le Pilgrimage took riders from Hotel Restaurant Saint Roch down into the valley, along the Durance river up through the Reotier climb into the forest toward Checkpoint 1.

As this event is not a race, this midway point is a place to relax, connect and enjoy some local fondue de fromage and the views from the cabane Tramouillon.

From there they followed a paper map towards a bonus point in the route where they found encouragement in the shape of some génépi and words from Saint Roch himself.

After the third and final ascent of the day it was a flowy downhill back to the comfort of the pilgrims table.

3, 2, 1, allez, allez! Le Pilgrimage 2026 is underway.

As tradition has it, we stayed close to home for Stage 1, following the trails of the Pays des Écrins. First along the Durance. Then climbing via Réotier towards Cabane de Tramouillon.

The first stamp was waiting there, in the alpine meadows around the old shepherd’s hut. Hungry riders took a seat around the table for cheese fondue. Some simply couldn’t resist pairing the fromage with a glass of Savoie w**e.

From there, the journey continued through the Vallée de Freissinières Valley before finishing with our climb de la maison: Col de la Pousterle, the backdoor to our own beautiful valley.

A first day full of everything we could wish for. Shared trails. Shared food. Shared stories.

Our Piemontese playground next week.

This is where our pilgrims will make the final push of Le Pilgrimage: the climb to the Colle del Sommeiller, reaching 3,000 metres on one of Europe’s highest rideable gravel roads.

On the way back down, we’ll gather at Rifugio Scarfiotti for the final stamp, a proper Italian mountain meal and maybe a little Spritz, an Ichnusa or a Moretti.

One last big climb before the journey turns back towards our basecamp in France.

À bientôt, pilgrims.
