Stretching out my hips ready for the ski season! The first pitch of Romulan Warbird (5.12b) was exactly the kind of insecure, smeary, techy granite climbing on small gear I used to mostly avoid back in the day, however we all know you gotta work on your weaknesses and .shannon has been a good influence on this since it’s the type of climbing she loves.

An awesome few days on the South Rim showing .shannon the best granite in the Black on Astrodog 5.11+ and Tague yer Time 5.12. The techy cruxes of TyT didn’t feel any easier than last year with but I have a feeling we will be back. And no better spot to spend the night than the Two Boulder Bivi.

As the snow line creeps ever further downwards and the colors turn fully autumnal, time to daydream about the depths of winter. We’ve had the first snow at the tree line now; here are a few of my favorite local winter zones, enjoyed on those fleeting perfect January days last year ❄️

Three years ago I was guiding the traverse of the Mirroir d’Argentine when I bumped into Swiss legend Claude Remy on one of the summits who was putting the finishing touches on his new route in memory of the local hut guardian Sully who had run the Solalex for 32 year and who had just passed away. 27 pitches and 600 bolts, it’s an impressive effort. The majority of the climbing is homogeneous and good quality 6b-7a with some cool exposed traverses. Long day from Cham with and nice to be on a high north facing route that has no permafrost 😎

An easy but wild and loose traverse to gain access to the east face of the Grands Jorasses last Aug with .shannon. No queues for the routes back here…

Since it’s that time of year… May 16th, 2010, my first time on the Midi north face skiing the Eugster with . I found myself alone on the bridge with a 50m single rope in my bag, got chatting to Cedric who suggested we ski the Eugster together. The type of encounter that can only happen in Chamonix. Thanks Cedric for showing me the way down there, can’t believe that was 15 years ago, a different era…
