The way we respond to someone living with depression matters more than we often realize.

Comments like these are often intended to be encouraging, reassuring, or motivating.

But they can feel invalidating when they minimize the reality of living with depression.

When someone says, "Just think positive" or "Everyone gets sad sometimes," they may unintentionally overlook that depression is a mental health condition, not simply a temporary emotion or a choice.

When you hear these comments, you might:

🎈 Feel misunderstood or dismissed.

🎈 Feel guilty for struggling despite trying your best.

🎈 Question whether your symptoms are "serious enough."

🎈 Feel pressure to hide your emotions or pretend you're okay.

🎈 Become less likely to reach out for support in the future.

The reality is that depression is much more than sadness.

🎈 You can have depression and still smile, laugh, or go to work.

🎈 You can have depression even if your life looks "good" from the outside.

🎈 You can be grateful for what you have and still experience depression.

🎈 You can want to feel better while still finding everyday tasks incredibly difficult.

🎈 You deserve compassion, understanding, and evidence-based support, not judgment.

Depression a complex mental health condition that deserves empathy, appropriate treatment, and support.

At Blue Sky Learning, our neurodiversity-affirming therapists provide compassionate, evidence-based care for individuals living with depression, helping clients reduce shame, build coping strategies, and reconnect with hope.

If you feel that su***de is the only way for you to stop the pain, it isn’t true. Su***de would only shift the pain from you to your loved ones, or even simply to the person who finds you.
