Most of us are pretty bad at predicting how great we’ll feel after exercise.

We’ll always feel better for moving - but our brains don’t always remember that bit.
Often we focus on the effort, the discomfort, the time it’ll take.
The benefits - happier, less stressed, more mobile, more creative, energised - can be harder to remember.

This is called a forecasting error.
We overestimate how hard it’ll feel and underestimate how great it’ll feel. Every time (in the beginning at least).

One of my clients described it well this week: “I feel great after the session, but it fades. And when the next session comes around, I have to convince myself all over again.”
Sound familiar?

The solution is to remind yourself of what you already know…You’ll always feel better for moving.

Move Well: 5 moves for stronger shoulders and upper body.

3 sets of 5-8 reps for each move, 1 min rest between sets.

Single arm overhead press - press straight up, keep your core switched on and avoid leaning to the side.

Lateral raise - lift to shoulder height, and keep the movement controlled on the way down.

Bent over row - hinge forward, pull the weight towards your hip, and squeeze your shoulder blade at the top.

Push up - keep your body in a straight line throughout. If you need to, raise your hands to make it less intense.

Pull up ⭐ bonus move - band assisted is a great place to start. Pull your chest towards the bar and lower yourself down with control.

Save this for your next upper body session.

The response to my post about ‘Active in the Aude + Ariege’ has been brilliant - thanks all. It seems there's an appetite for this new Facebook group, and your comments have been really helpful.

One more question before I get going….

If you joined ‘Active in the Aude & Ariège’ - a Facebook group for English speakers in the Aude & Ariège who want to find and enjoy activities in this part of France - what would you mainly use it for?

I can't do a poll on my page, so write your answer in the comments. Pick all that you’re interested in:

A. Finding walking/hiking companions
B. Discovering local sports clubs, facilities, classes
C. Finding out what active adventures are on your doorstep (rafting, canyoning etc)
D. Organising or joining group activities, events and outings
E. Getting recommendations (gyms, routes, swimming spots, events)
F. Finding an activity partner (tennis, cycling, running, football etc.)
G. Connecting with others whether I'm here full-time or just part of the year
H. Just knowing what's going on locally

Or if there’s something else you’d hope to get from this Facebook group, that isn’t already on this list, share that too - your ideas will shape the first version of this.

And if you comment I'll make sure you're among the first to know when this launches!

One of the movements I’m practising for my pistol squat is single leg balance, eyes closed, with arm movements. It works on the balance and body control the pistol squat demands - because you don’t get better at a skill by only practising the skill itself. You can also work on the components that make it possible.

Five weeks ago this drill felt completely out of reach. I couldn’t hold the position for more than a few seconds before wobbling out.

Week by week it got slightly less terrible. And this week I held it for the full time.

I wanted to share that shift - from “I’m never going to get this” to “I might actually be able to do this” to “I’m doing it” - because it’s a great feeling, and it’s something I see with clients all the time.

The thing that feels completely out of reach at the start becomes achievable. The tricky part is that early on the progress is invisible - and the temptation to give up arrives before the breakthrough does.

Is there something in your training that feels impossible right now? Maybe it’s something a coach like me has given you?! If so, trust them! It might just need a bit of time and consistency ⬇️

I understand why pain feels like a reason to wait.

But for most common niggles, the choice isn’t between pain and no pain. It’s between
A. You stop moving and gradually get weaker.
B. You move progressively and get stronger.

It’s not about pushing through or ignoring your body. It’s about understanding that movement and getting stronger helps - it’s not something to put off until you ‘feel better’.

If you’ve been waiting to feel better before you start, it might be worth asking whether starting is what would help.

If you’re living in the Aude or Ariège, I'd love to hear what you think of this idea…

I have an existing Facebook group that's been quiet for a while - I started it during Covid lockdowns as a space for my personal/group training clients to encourage each other to stay active. Now that I'm focused on online coaching, it's been largely inactive.

Lately I've been thinking about an idea for what it could become, and I’d love to get your feedback.

What I've noticed in the people I work with is that a lot of English speakers were active back home, but since moving to France it's been harder to find their people. Language barriers, not knowing what's out there or how to join it, not having a running buddy or a tennis partner or someone to hike with, etc etc.

So I'm thinking about turning it into an open community - along the lines of 'Active in the Aude & Ariège' - a place where English speakers can share activities, find activity partners, discover local events, and basically help each other get out and do things.

Before I change anything, I'd love to know what you think.
My question is… Would you find a group like this useful?
I can’t seem to create a poll on this page (!) so if you think this would be useful I’d love it if you'd like this post or comment below so I can gauge interest.

And if there's something you'd love to see in a group like this that I haven't mentioned - put it in the comments or DM me. Your ideas will shape it.

(And thanks everyone in the closed group who’s already contributed there).

Women whose lives have changed and want a routine that suits their life as it is now. Women who want to feel strong and capable for years to come - not just for summer.

My coaching is fully personalised, online, and built entirely around you.

‘Keeping the Thread’ training sessions. It’s my approach for staying connected to a skill or habit during a busy or disrupted week.

I was away last week - climbing, hiking, staying active - but no structured pistol squat sessions. What I did do was 3 short - 15-minute practices - just here and there, just enough to keep the movement familiar.

It meant coming back to proper training this week was easier than otherwise. It didn’t feel like ‘starting again’. And my body remembered the movement - I even made a tiny bit of progress.

A complete break is fine too - rest is essential and sometimes it’s exactly what you need. But if you want an easier return, keeping even a tiny thread of the skill or habit going can make all the difference.

Do you find it easy to keep something going during a break, or is it a challenge? I’d love to hear👇

One of my biggest irks with the fitness industry is the obsession with dramatic transformations - the before and after, the 6-week fix etc. But the most meaningful progress is rarely visible in a photo.

This is what it looks like for the women I coach. Thinking differently to move more. A movement that felt impossible starting to feel familiar. A mindset shift that makes consistency easier. A win worth celebrating.

My clients see real progress, that lasts for life.

4 spots open for June 1:1 coaching.
