The Mindset Programmer

The Mindset Programmer Women: Get to know yourselves. It is the difference between living life like a scared little girl or I was not known to be an action taker.

In every training course I enrolled in, I would be really good at taking the 'behind the scene' actions. Reading the course material, doing the exercises, hoping that the trainer would give me a gold star on my forehead at the end of the day. But when it came to taking the practical actions, I was nowhere to be found. It was torture just thinking about having to go out there and telling people wha

t I was doing. Announcing to the world what I was training to do. And then I would struggle with the guilt. The guilt of having spent a ton of money on the course. A course I was sure would change my life. And all the time I spent on attending the workshops and doing the theory exercises. When was I going to see results? Other delegates seemed to forge ahead. Every time we met, they had loads to share. Of all the wonderful things they had accomplished since we last met. And I was feeling smaller and smaller. It has taken me a long time to even get to a place of believing in myself. Believing in myself enough to start taking action. When I look at myself now, I hardly recognise myself. I have become an action taker. At the risk of using an overused phrase: if I can do it, so can you. What I have discovered sounds like a secret but it is truth. And truth is available to every single one of us.

Single mother of three young kids holding an admin position at a small law firm who dresses like she on a perpetual Saturday night date. Yet, she tells the big wigs at PG&E exactly what she thinks of their “lame ass” offer - and where they can stick it. I have often wondered if women like Erin Brockovich were born with that kind of confidence in themselves - because I don’t think I was. What Erin seems to have in abundance in this case is conviction. She has strong feelings about the people who were wronged by PG&E, and she allows those feelings to fuel her energy at work.

FOR ENTREPRENEURS IN TRAINING. “We’re telling you what to do; why don’t you just do it?” Investigation #3. This well-meaning admonishment often has the opposite effect: it gets ignored. While it is true that the experts have walked their path to success, it may not necessarily work for us in the exact same way. We struggle to imitate their path and get derailed by self-doubt. So how can we extract the value in learning about someone else’s success? How can we make it work for us?

FOR ENTREPRENEURS IN TRAINING. “We’re telling you what to do; why don’t you just do it?” Investigation #1. Here we have a statement that, in theory, sounds easy enough to do. Yet, we don’t do what they tell us to do. Why is that? Why wouldn’t we trust the people who have walked the path we are embarking on? Who have achieved the results we are after? There is something about being told what to do that doesn’t always work for us. Do you think we are being defiant, or is it something else?

“I know what to do but I can’t make myself start.” Why is it that, despite our best intentions, we struggle to take the actions we want to take? Here is my best answer: our heads are too full! Angry? Frustrated? Inspired? On top of the world? Here is the golden question: What will you do about it? (Or do you think that those feelings mean nothing?)

“Math became useful.” With all the calculus courses and differential equations I punished myself with in college, I never thought I would hear someone say that anything math-related from the classroom would be useful. Until Enhanced Eddie learned to use more of his brain than most of us do—and found dormant ways to increase his wealth.

We own our attitudes. What a notion! We decide whether we will feel good about ourselves at the end of today or not. Stuff happens all day long. To all of us. What are we going to do with it?

“In the fall, we either enjoy, or we excuse. For those who failed to take full advantage of of the spring, who failed to guard their crops carefully throughout the heat of summer, there can be no legitimate reasons…only excuses, and excuses are merely apologetic attempts to place blame on circumstances rather than on ourselves.” (“The Seasons of Life,” Jim Rohn)
