YES i am good at my job. YES some of me being good at my job is technical / theoretical knowledge and tools, and YES some of me being good at my job is also knowing how deeply frustrating it can be to be us.

Hello. Reminder time. Bodies change for all sorts of reasons, in all sorts of ways. Please stop commenting on people's bodies. Most of the time, the people whose bodies are changing are aware of the change. All of the time, it is their business and their business alone, until and unless they ask if you want it to be your business also. Please stop commenting on people's bodies.

*If* my body has changed recently, it's in response to grief, stress and shock. It is not to be complimented or commented upon. It will change again in the future. That's what bodies are meant to do. Complimenting a fat person becoming slightly less fat isn't the gift you think it is. All bodies are morally neutral. Thinness doesn't deserve praise. Weight loss often comes through struggle, and it is fu**ed up to pretend otherwise.

Go read the article, there's more depth, nuance, and slightly less spike over there. And it's not just about me, of course.

Unclench your jaw, love you bye ❤️

sometimes i check in with the quieter parts of me - the ones who learned early not to take up much space, to say “it’s fine” even when it’s not.

recently, i asked one of them what they needed. not what they felt they ‘should’ want, not what would be productive, but what they actually wanted. the answer surprised me with its simplicity (and to find out what it was you have to head to my substack/patreon lol sorrynotsorry).

it reminded me that i didn’t get sober / heal my relationship with food / come out / learn boundaries / do all this fu***ng work just to *survive* a world that keeps getting louder and harsher in its hostility towards everyone who experiences marginalisation and oppression. i did - and do - it so i can keep choosing myself and my people, even when it’s hard. ESPECIALLY when it’s hard. so we can stay on this side of the veil, and make it more powerful and beautiful than their hate.

when i hear “i didn’t do all this for this”, i try to answer gently:
“yes, you did.” and also, “it’s okay to need more support now.”

if this speaks to you, i went into more depth and detail about these conversations with myself over on substack and patreon, including a simple way to check in with your own parts without it getting too woo-woo or overwhelming. the essays aren’t paywalled, but your contributions really do help me pay my therapy bills.

links are in the usual places.

unclench your jaw.
let that breath out.
go do some good.
i love you.

if you’ve ever thought “i think i know what Jo’s about, but do i actually know what she **does**?” - this one’s for you.

if you found me because i left a devastatingly witty comment on someone’s post and you’re curious to know more about the person behind the words, this one’s for you. if you like pictures of my face and the beach with bilingual explanations about my life and work, this one’s for you. if you want to potentially work together but need to check out the vibe first, this one’s for you. hello, here i am, this is me. c’est même doublement moi puisque c’est en français aussi, de rien de rien, non je ne regrette rien. bisous bisous ❤ ❤ ❤

I *hated* the dry januarys that i did in the past. Hated them. MISERABLE. And then, one ‘random’ october, back in 2019, i decided to take 28 days off the booze and see it as an opportunity and a challenge, rather than a punishment. Then I CHOSE to extend it because I was curious to see what might be next. I have rarely, if ever, looked back. But if I’d just kept the impression that i had of ‘sobriety’ being the dry january SLOG of DOOM, there’s no way i’d be here, 6+ years sober and enjoying so much of it.

So. if you did it, or have done it … what’s next? Why? What might help with the next steps? No judgement, but always encouragement and support.

Unclench your jaw, love. OK?
Let that breath out.
I love you.

Hi friends. February is almost upon us. Time marches on, and we march with it, in all the ways and places we can. And we rest when (nay, *before*) we need to.
This month, you can catch me in various spaces: the monthly get s**t done body doubling session this Monday, duckpond recovery meetings, fedup support groups, she recovers support groups, PARIS, and a community, pay-what-you-can workshop on what we can do in times like this, to round out the month. Deep breath. We’ve got this.
Details and links are in the various slides, please get in touch if they’re not accessible for you for whatever reason. Also please leave a little comment, tell me what you’re excited about - it can be about my offerings, but just anything you’re looking forward to in February.

As I start to wind down my Facebook profile (switching to the page, we’ll see where it takes us) I want to remind you that there are lots of different ways for us to stay in touch, and if you're curious about working together in therapy or coaching - now’s a great time to start.

We need each other.
Thanks for being part of my world.
Unclench your jaw.
I love you.
You do too.

Act accordingly.

august events are live! sign up now and future you will thank you.

if you’ve been meaning to come along to one of my groups or coworking sessions — this is your sign to book it in now, before life eats your summer calendar. (yes you have a beach body, take it to the beach whenever you can please)

duckpond meetings are free of diet culture, sobriety-focussed, q***r/messy/neurodivergent recovery support groups with a splash of chaos and a whole lot of heart.

get ish done is gentle, structured coworking with other kind humans. we bring our to-do lists and do what we can, together. sometimes that's naps, sometimes it's finding other ways to change the world.

fedup is a support space for folks in recovery from eating disorders and disordered eating who are also trans, gender-diverse and/or intersex, typically otherwise marginalised by mainstream treatment approaches. come join our support groups!

she recovers lgbtqia+ is a weekly peer-led online space for q***r people of all genders (who identify with / are comfortable in women-focussed spaces) and journeys. i support a meeting once or twice a month. come join us.

links to sign up for each are in my linktree or directly on the calendly (.com/jowalduck) - and yes, please do sign up in advance. it helps me plan, and also reminds you to actually come.

🧡 see you soon.

thank you love you unclench your jaw do some good and SIGN UP NOW.

“sometimes i don’t even know what to call it. is it a flare-up of the long covid (which is still the working hypothesis for my ongoing illness, although it hasn’t been updated for years because it - thankfully - hasn’t been bad enough to make it to the top of the S**t To Update list)? is it POTS, or fibromyalgia, or chronic fatigue syndrome, or ME? am ~I~ the drama?! is it autistic burnout, ADHD burnout, or some other kind of meltdown or breakdown? is it even important to know? i’m not sure. what i do know is that my body and brain hit a wall, and the world shrinks around me. i know that i hate it and i need to listen to it and so even if i’m pouting, that’s what i’ll do.“

joan’s curled up on her chair, and I’m curled up in the kind of flare that makes the world feel very small. this week’s post is about what i do when my body says no, grief says everything, and life gets pared down to the essentials.
here’s a glimpse of what’s helping:
simple meals that feel grounding

soft movement (if any) and lots of rest

letting people show up for me without guilt

slow, gentle grief work

keeping routines and rituals tiny but steady

the full post is up now on patreon + substack for all subscribers, free and paying although the paying ones are extra appreciated, especially in times like this. the full post includes how I build my “flare toolkit” and why it keeps me from sliding into panic or shame when everything shrinks.

links are where you’d expect them.

go do some good - the world needs it and you.
i love you.
