You do NOT need to run to get and stay fit!

Hey everyone, i know that running is all the rage and it seems more efficient to get fit.

I don't know about you but i found running long distances quite draining and hard on my body. I also found it quite hard psychologically to think about 'going out for a run'...

So i switched to walking.

Most of the time i am still one of the fastest movers on the mountain.

So don't beat yourself up if you can't run or it just feels too much effort....

Start with a walk. You will be surprised at the places it will take you! And how your body will get and stay in shape!

I was in a spin class this morning and had a lightbulb moment!

The final section was a 'choose your own workout' section.

And a little voice inside told me to choose a moderate hill and climb steadily for the 4 minutes.

Now in a way it doesn't matter because, being the instructor, it's not my workout so i wasn't there for me. But it struck me that i had automatically chosen something that i was actually already really good at 🤣🤣🤣.

So i encouraged my clients to do the opposite. To choose something they really didn't want to do. And then sit with that discomfort for the 4 minutes.

I have no idea if any of them did. But i realised how easy it is for us to gravitate towards what we are good at. This is fine, but it usually means we are probably not making progress (if progress is the goal of course).

Just some thoughts!

Total commitment to me... And then to you!

A subtle rib shift and internal rotation of the right shoulder has been causing issues for years and years in my left hip, leg and lower back.

Or perhaps the reverse is true??

On my quest, i am grateful and excited to be working with my latest coach, Jonathan, to unpick this dysfunction.

It means travelling 1 hour 15 mins to get to him. And it's really not cheap.

But worth it!

For one, it feels good. But also the less dysfunctional I am, the more I can be a good example and show up for my clients and the people all around me...

In the world of fitness and health there are a million 'shoulds' and 'shoudn'ts'. 10 million perhaps!

Arguments abound as to the finer details, but we all pretty much agree on basic points: moving is good, eating too much is bad and eating a lot of junk is not a good strategy.

Most people know this and they know deep down whether their lifestyle is creating health or dysfunction.

I have found that people don't like to be judged or criticised. They may seek out advice but fitness professionals have to respect that they are adults, they are autonomous and if the message is delivered with the wrong energy it is not going to be received.

We also have to check whether we are following our own advice or we are just being hypocrites or making excuses.

It can be frustrating to see someone you know, train or love indulge over and over in damaging habits.

However, I believe the best way to suspend judgement is to sort myself out and then be the example i wish them to follow. If they are not inspired then no matter... someone will be 😊🙏

We should be doing 20-45 minutes every day including strength training at least 3 times a week. Get on it!
