This weekend Riviera Polo Club hosted teams from los Avellanos Polo Club, Polo Club di Roma, Cote d'Azur Polo Club and Valcastello in a friendly and informal tournament, characterised by friendship and good old-fashioned sportsmanship. Overall winners were Los Avellanos/ Roma Polo Club with Oscar Carona, Franco Piazza, and Gian Luca Magini who travelled 800 km for the occasion, they soundly spanked Riviera (Gary, Jamie & Caroline Pike) and Cote d'Azur/Valcastello (Chantal d'Acquarone, Mark & Michele Schettino, Puma Pizzorno) while giving at the same time a wonderful demonstration of fairplay and generosity towards the younger players present. Michele Schettino was unanimously voted most valuable player, and is an up and coming star of the game with a natural talent and predisposition that is destined to take him far.
Many thanks to all concerned; our grooms Claire and Will, Coco and Pedro, to Olga & Anna for organising the hospitality and logistics, to Jamie and friends (mad dogs and Englishmen ...) for their hard work under the midday sun to get everything in place on time, and Giordano Magini for umpiring under the hot, hot sun of the South of France.
Rematches are planned at the Nations Cup at los Avellanos in July when Riviera will play for Monaco, then in September everyone will be back to Riviera before going on to the Italian National Championship in Rome, and then finally on to the Versilia Beach Polo Tournament in Italy in October.
Good luck to everyone and have a great season of polo.
Gary 😎
