It’s about to get seriously hot again in Europe.

Here are 5 mountain huts you can HIKE to (no technical travel required) that are above 2,500 meters, so you can beat the heat and let your body recover a bit in the cool, fresh mountain air.

Refuge du Glacier Blanc — the approach takes you directly into the heart of the Écrins’ glacial landscape.

Rifugio Torre di Pisa — lower, but a relatively straightforward hike into spectacular Dolomite scenery.

Cabane de Moiry — the combination of 2,825 m altitude, easy access, glacier scenery and relatively short approach is hard to beat.

Cabane des Dix — the most “high mountain” feeling of the group while still being accessible without technical climbing on the normal hiking approach.

Weisshornhütte - the highest refuge on the list, but the most demanding approach from the valley.

These aren’t easy hikes, but they don’t require glacier crossing or technical climbing.

1. Eiger Nordwand, Switzerland — The most famous of them all, an ~1,800 m wall with an infamous history.

2. Cima Grande di Lavaredo, Italy — The striking vertical north face of the Tre Cime, famous for the Comici-Dimai route.

3. Grandes Jorasses North Face, France/Italy — A spectacular ~1,200 m granite wall above the Leschaux Glacier.

4. Piz Badile, Switzerland/Italy — A huge, elegant granite wall and a classic of long alpine rock climbing.

5. Matterhorn North Face, Switzerland/Italy — The iconic pyramid’s dark, steep north wall.

6. Petit Dru (Les Drus), France — One of the most spectacular granite monoliths in the Mont Blanc massif.
