Last year we had the privilege to explore and document for the first time Mesophotic Coral Ecosystems of the Nusa Penida Marine Protected Area, in collaboration with Universitas Udayana and supported by Blancpain and Institut Français d'Indonésie. We found that despite the challenging conditions that were making the dives difficult (strong currents and cold waters), biodiversity was thriving at depth and displaying an incredible range of colours and shapes. Many of the species encountered are still unknown to science but nevertheless, deserve urgent and proper protection.

Here you can see Marc Crane filming an azooxanthellate octocoral, probably belonging to the Genus Solenocaulon (taxonomy is a complicated and ever-changing field), at a depth of 76 metres.
