Back in 2020, when played Porto in the , Pep Guardiola was furious at the way Phil Foden took a free-kick.

🗣️ | Pep shouted at the sidelines: “Fu***ng hell, Phil! Fu***ng hell! You haven’t done what I said!”

Phil Foden waited near the dressing room door and confronted Pep about this, saying:

🗣️ | “Don’t ever do that to me again! You wouldn’t do that to other players.”

The statement was true and Pep understood that. Pep apologised profusely and unreservedly and even called a meeting to apologise to Foden in front of the rest of the team and then paid a self-imposed fine. This was highly respected and admired by the team.

Pep Guardiola had been willing and wanting Foden to stand up for himself, and this situation showed him Phil’s growth from a boy to a man.
