Today, as a global computer outage paralyze air traffic, railways, stock markets, and bank payment terminals, I realize the importance of occasionally being able to do without technology and returning to the basics.
I particularly cherish this photo taken a few years ago during the Rebelle Rally in California and Nevada, an offroad rally where competitors navigate using only a compass and no GPS. Finding checkpoints using topographical maps and a compass, calculating headings, sometimes triangulating to pinpoint their location on the map as quickly as possible—these are all the subtleties of the codriver’s work.
