A recent UN Women report reveals a concerning trend: in 2024 nearly a quarter of governments report a global backlash against women’s rights. This regression includes increased discrimination, weaker legal protections, and less funding for women’s programs, alongside more women and girls living in conflict zones. While we celebrate women’s achievements today, we also need address these setbacks and call for rights for all women. “When women and girls can rise, we all thrive.“

Harnessing the Power of the Pause

I recently returned from hosting my transformative yoga & mindfulness retreat on the French Riviera. It may be no surprise that I felt physically rejuvenated afterward, but the experience also left me feeling quite reflective; the short pause from everyday life allowed me to step back and truly reflect on my inner state.

So how can we get the most from the opportunities we have to pause?

This retreat wasn’t just a break, but an impactful pause that highlighted how constant thoughts and stress manifest in our bodies. Silent coastal walks, yoga sessions, proven mindfulness practices, and reflections helped us recognise and release these pressures, reconnecting with ourselves amid the serene ocean backdrop.

In such a peaceful environment, it’s easy to let your mind step back. Crucially, participants were able to carry the rejuvenated states of mind back into their everyday lives. Of course, we still get caught up in things—we haven’t all transformed into Zen gurus, but we experienced and learned techniques to recognise our busy minds and tap into that stillness of mind whenever needed.

If you find yourself at a crossroads, in a rut, or experiencing stress or burnout, consider the transformative impact of embracing a pause. How might this moment of reflection positively influence your life? By deliberately stepping away from our daily grind, we can prevent burnout and maintain our mental and physical well-being.

Remember, an intentional pause isn’t just a luxury; it’s a necessity for a balanced and healthy life. How will you use the summer pause wisely to recharge and rejuvenate?

Spring sparks a feeling of excitement!

Visibly, our surroundings change in dramatic ways—there are more hours of daylight, flowers blossom, trees turn a bright green. We spend more time outdoors and often get more exercise. Why not built our mindfulness muscle at the same time with a mindful walk?

Slow down, be aware of your environment and the sensations of your body with each step.
Notice the little details and the subtle sensations, the sounds and scents. When you catch your mind wandering, remember to connect back to your walk. Try it on the go from one meeting to another, on your way to grab a coffee or home and notice the difference.

It’s Lunchtime!!

It's tempting to grab lunch and return back to your desk to keep working or reading emails and scrolling down social media.

Would you get more done?

Most likely NOT!
Your brain needs a time-out from work and screens. Taking a break--even a 15 minute one--could help you stay recharged for the rest of the day. And the best part is, you'll leave the office feeling less stressed and more energized to enjoy your evenings.

Mindful break activities that will help you feel your best:

👉🏻Take a mindful walk

Take some deep and slow breaths at fresh air and bring your attention to the sensation of your feet walking on earth. A simple exercise that creates a connection with the body which brings a grounded feeling of peace in the frantic rush of corporate life.

👉🏻Look up

And away from the screen, get outside or open the window and take a look out into the world, look into someone’s eyes, look up. Notice what’s there.
It can refresh your mind and spark creativity instantly.

👉🏻Move your body

Get up and take a few mindful stretches or a yoga class in the park. A great way to release tension and stagnant energy in your body from sitting all morning.

How amazing did the rain feel? Water that was so needed this summer. A great invitation to bring in mindful awareness to slow down: “Begin by watching the rain with openhearted curiosity, as a child might. Notice how rain forms droplets, streams and puddles.

Observe how the raindrops dance and ripple on the surface of puddles. Notice how the light can change. Perhaps the sky darkens, or is brighter because the sun is reflecting on the surface of rainwater, perhaps producing a rainbow through the droplets in the air.

Listen to the different sounds the rain makes as it pitters, patters, splashes, drips and gushes.

Feel the raindrops land on your clothing and the sensations as they drip and trickle on exposed skin — hands, legs or an upturned face. Notice as your clothes get damp and stick to your skin.

Take a deep breath in, savoring the smell of petrichor — the earthy scent produced when rain falls on dry soil. As you release the breath, notice any corresponding release of tension you may have been unconsciously holding.

Finally tilt back the head and take the opportunity to taste the rain, combining all the five traditionally recognized senses — sight, sound, touch, smell and taste — and just be in the moment for a while.

We can all perceive a rainy day as disappointing, choosing to feel miserable and gloomy. Instead, take it as an opportunity to test our resilience and feel invigorated. Or simply choose to have no attachment at all — accepting that it is as it is, feeling at peace and content with it — mindful that rain is part of nature, just as we are.” ~ Ian Banyard
