The course: Golf National

When it opened in October 1990, the magazine ‘European Golf’ described Golf National as “one of the most surprising golf courses of the 21st century”. The unique nature of Golf National comes from its topography, The course achieves an impressive feat, that of skilfully combining the best of golf architecture to create a golf course that combines a traditional feel with

a modern sophistication in design. Scottish style tall grasses, gorse and broom also combine well. Golf National thus successfully blends elements of golf courses from around the world, yet retains a unique French character. The surprising and spectacular landscape of Golf National is a direct legacy of the history of its construction, born out of the imagination of the architect, Hubert Chesneau, with the consulting services of Robert Van Hagge. The two men wanted the course to be built on a totally flat landscape, in order to create a uniquely contoured course. As such, every piece of landscape and terrain was carefully modelled to make each hazard a real threat. Hole after hole, the earth was landscaped, the tee platforms created, the greens erected and the bunkers dug. Particular attention was paid to the natural water flow network to guarantee the durability of the fairways in all weather conditions and to pay respect to the existing drainage patterns.
